LITTLE BLUE BOOKS FOR ADVENT AND THE CHRISTMAS SEASON Six minutes a day. Each 24-hour day has 240 “six minute packages.” During the Advent and Christmas seasons, you’re asked to give one of those to the Lord. The books will be distributed at all Masses this weekend.

SAINT IGNATIUS THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE

In recognition of our need to give, and the many needs of our church and parish, and in gratitude for God’s gifts to us, we declare our willingness to return a portion of our Treasure to our parish, as part of our total Christian stewardship.

The Youth Group is currently collecting non-perishable food items to be packed and distributed to over 50 families in our parish and the community. Food can be dropped off in back of either the church or chapel in the food pantry bins at all Masses. Some common foods in need are mashed potatoes, gravy, pasta, sauce, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruits and vegetables, cake mix, icing, cranberry sauce, and cereal. This is the last weekend food can be accepted for our drive so we may prepare for distributing the bags for the Thanksgiving Holiday. If you still need to drop off your food donation and were not able to bring it to this weekend’s Masses, you may drop it off at Bergan Parish Center on Sunday, November 23rd from 1:00-3:00 PM. Thank you for your generous donations!

PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS - ADVENT VESPERS Prepare your hearts for the coming of the Christ Child. Advent Vespers will be prayed each Sunday evening at 7:00 PM. Please join us as we celebrate the evening prayer of the Church.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Sunday, November 23rd - All Advent Family Class - beginning with a short prayer service in Good Shepherd gym at 9:15 AM. Families will then proceed to the classrooms for the Advent project. Families are asked to bring scissors and tape. All family members are most welcome to attend. Sunday, November 30th - No class for Grades 1-6 Wednesday, December 3rd - Release time for Grades 7 & 8 Saturday, December 6th - First Penance Retreat - 10 AM - Noon, Bergan Parish Center. All members of this year’s First Penance Class are expected to attend. Sunday, December 7th - Grade 4 Family Morning and Class Mass. All members of Grade 4, both private and public schools, and their families are strongly encouraged to attend the family morning beginning at 9:15 AM in Conlan Hall with a continental breakfast and followed by the class Mass at 10:30 AM.

BE AN ANGEL THIS ADVENT As is tradition in our parish, the Angel Wreaths have been placed in the back of the church and chapel. If you have not already taken an ornament, please consider doing so. The item should be newly purchased. Wrap the gift and attach the ornament to the outside of the package. Place it in the Angel Sleigh in the church or under the Angel Wreath in the chapel, or you may drop it off at the rectory during regular office hours. Please do not wrap used items. The deadline for returning the Angel gifts is Sunday, December 7th. If you have any questions or for some reason you are unable to return your gift by the deadline, please contact Jenn Frusciante at 570-574-9724. Remember to be an angel this Advent. CHRSTMAS WAFER (OPLATKI) The word “Oplatek” derives from the latin word “Oblatum”, meaning sacred bread. Made of unleavened dough, it first began to be used in the 10th century as a liturgical wafer, with a religious motif engraved on a side. Families gather on Christmas Eve and share the wafer with a simple blessing ritual as their traditional Christmas Eve meal begins. The wafers will be available after all Masses next weekend. Everyone is welcome to share in this rich Polish tradition which expresses a tender love for the Christ-Child. Any donation will be deeply appreciated!

THE THANKFUL TREE Throughout November, the sanctuary of our church now includes a “Thankful Tree.” The children from our Religious Education classes wrote what they are thankful for on leaves and brought them to the altar at the 10:30 AM Mass. They now hang on the tree as a representation and visual reminder of God’s goodness and how that plays out in the lives of our young people. As you look at the tree, think of the many things we are all thankful for...the kindness of friends, family, lessons we’ve learned this year, our health, our country’s freedom, worshipping with our wonderful parish community and all of the many other things in our lives. We thank our loving God for all that we receive...Amen. If any children missed the opportunity to write on a leaf, please let someone know so they can participate. Also, all are welcome to come up to the tree to read the leaves after any Mass.

MARY’S MINISTRY CHARITY HOLIDAY SOCIAL - DECEMBER 9TH Do not delay. Plan now to join your parish family and friends for some holiday fun and refreshments. On Tuesday, December 9th, Mary’s Ministry will host a Charity Social from 5:30-7:30 PM in Conlan Hall. A light supper meal will be served from 5:30-6:30 PM followed by a delightful musical program presented by “Changing Habits”, an outreach ministry from Gate of Heaven Parish, directed by Marilyn O’Connell. Advance reservations are required. In place of an entrance fee, participants are asked to contribute a wrapped Christmas present for an adult woman to be donated to residents of McAuley House and Ruth’s Place. CHRISTMAS TOY/FOOD REGISTRATION St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, a program of Catholic Social Services is once again teaming up with local parishes and the United States Marines “Toys for Tots” for this year’s Christmas Toy Drive. Last year, we distributed toys to over 2,000 children in the Wyoming Valley. This year’s registration for Toys and Food for Christmas will be held at Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre on Monday, November 24th - 9:00 to 11:00 AM and 2:00 to 6:00 PM. Parents should bring the following 1) Photo ID 2)Verification of income 3)A Social Security Card for everyone in the household and 4) Proof of address with a recent date. Food distribution will take place at St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, 39 E. Jackson St., Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, December 17th from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM and 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Toy distribution will take place at Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, December 17th from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 4:00 to 7:00 PM. We need donations of toys. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bridge, a program of Catholic Social Services, which serves children in five counties throughout NE Pennsylvania, is in great need of Big Brother Big Sister volunteers.
