FROM THE HEADMASTER Having spent thousands of days in my life teaching in schools, I would be lying if I said could remember each and every one of them. However, I can remember every day spent teaching out of school – especially during residentials. We are half way through our fortnight of visits and, having been privileged to spend the past week in France with Year 6, the importance of these trips is as clear as ever. The obvious benefits are those experiences that simply cannot be delivered in the classroom: the French school, the supermarket challenge, visiting Pegasus Bridge, standing on Omaha Beach and the comparisons of the British, American and German cemeteries. However, the subtle differences are just as significant: relying on your friends, taking that little bit more personal responsibility, considering how you help others as well as yourself and spending a week without any gadgetry. Residentials are times of growth. Children grow in character. The relationships between the children and the staff deepen. The children grow in confidence and self-belief. The investment required to deliver a successful residential is considerable; from the financial support of parents to the staff time spent organising the logistics and the preparedness to be away from home and on-call 24 hours a day. However, the dividends are vast. Thank you to everyone involved in making these visits so successful. ROYAL WEDDING LUNCH WPS enjoyed a wonderful Royal Wedding street party lunch. Our youngest children in Chapel and Prices' Nursery were dressed to impress in red, white and blue and looked resplendent in their wedding hats and crowns. Mrs Fuller and Mrs Price were wonderfully dressed in their Sunday finest with elegant fascinators and corsage and guided the children through a fabulous party lunch. Thank you to our wonderful catering team for creating a delicious feast fit for a Prince and Princess and decking out the hall for the children to enjoy. Thank you also to Mr Price for joining our celebrations.

YEAR 5 TRIP TO BRENSCOMBE Year 5 enjoyed a wonderful residential trip to Brenscombe this week. The children learnt about coasts, fossils and the different types of rock formations, which will support their topic work this term. The children also enjoyed a number of brilliant activities such as abseiling, climbing, archery, power boat driving, Big Canoe paddling all the way to Brownsea island (and racing back again). The year group were a pleasure to take away and we would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs Middleton for organising the whole trip, along with the staff who ably supported her, everyone arrived home safe and sound with lots of stories to share.

SOUTHWEST SCHOOLS RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS Congratulations to Beatrice Varley, Nerys Jones, Ella MacAlister and Bethany Whitehead in Year 3, Oscar Milton and Bertie Price in Year 4 and Seren Jones, Lewie Harrison and Darcey Grey in Year 6, for competing for the first time in three team relay events - a Biathle (run swim run), a triathle (shoot swim run) and a laser run (shoot run). Superb teamwork and comradery was displayed with special mention to Bethany and Bertie who stepped in at last minute, seizing the opportunity to try something new and doing so with a smile as well as some very good shooting despite it being their first time on the range! Well done everyone. INVITATION TO ALL WPS PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS Mrs de Bolla has started a Netball session every Monday for adults (Mums, Dads and Grandparents too!). Thursday was a special day on which Wellington School launched IT Schools for Africa. Members of the WPS Council we invited to attend a presentation from a company that specialises in sustainable re-cycling of computers, laptops and other technological equipment. This equipment goes to African countries and given to schools that have no access to computers. Every month about 600 computers and monitors are transported, once in Africa the equipment is re-tested and the children and staff given training. During the day, the children use the computers and when school has finished, adults from the local community have access to them. 235 computers were taken from Wellington School and each one given a bar code so we can keep track of them. They have now begun the journey to Africa and we hope, in the future pupils at Wellington School will be able to speak to their new owners via Skype. PLEASE do not throw away any computer related items, particularly laptops, as we will shortly have special bins to put them in so they can be re-used in Africa. School Council thanked the team enthusiastically for the wonderful presentation, and are looking forward to developing the relationship and seeing where the computers go. FRIENDS OF WELLINGTON PREP SCHOOL CALLING ALL HOME BAKERS ….We would love if you would please bake some child size cakes or biscuits for the FoWPS to sell after the WPS Swimathon on Friday 25th May. If you are able to bake for us that would be wonderful. We would ask that cakes and biscuits are labelled with an allergen sticker so that we know what allergens they may contain. When dropping off any goodies, please pop by the school office and pick up a sticker, which can be attached to the box/tin. The sticker covers the top 14 allergens which are celery, crustations, fish, milk, mustard, peanut, soya, gluten, egg, lupin, molluscs, tree nuts, sesame seed and sulphur dioxideits, the tick list will take just a minute complete. Please bring in any donations on the day and leave them on the stage in the hall. Please note that we are still a nut free school and thank you in advance for your kindness. THOUGHTFULNESS MOMENT OF THE WEEK At Fleet services, on the way back from France, tired, hungry and tucking in to their supper and looking forward to getting home, a Year 6 child looks around and notices that Glynn, our coach driver isn’t eating with us. “Should we get him something to eat?” He suggests.
