From Your Pastor...From the Heart When is a church conference an opportunity to celebrate the Spirit of God in every way? Not every time, but during the church conference immediately following worship on October 18, we are going to add one item to the agenda—the most important item of all—we will hear testimonies of how individuals and team ministries in our church have “gone deeper” during these past nine months. There will be opportunities to write your experience on a note if you don’t want to speak out loud. As you may recall, in my State of the Church message back in January I felt led by God to challenge our church to “go deeper.” It has now become a part of the culture of our church and the words even appear on the walls of our new building. Many have given little to no thought in response to this. Many others have responded to a degree I could not have anticipated. They have sensed this is something more than just another church “program” but is something that sounds like God’s desire for our hearts. Let me remind you of a few quotes from that message: “I wondered have we hit our ceiling around here?” Could it be that there is such a sense of good will, so many reasons to celebrate, that we are tempted to believe we have now reached our destination and where we are is where we want to stay.” “Every time I get a little comfortable, which is hardly ever, that verse comes right back to me—’to whom much is given, much is required.’” We can’t play the humble game anymore at WFBC—we have been given too much. What will we now do with it that gives evidence of a power greater than our own that can change this community and change the world?” “People of God, it is time to tear down any ceilings we have placed upon ourselves or upon this church or ultimately upon God.” “It may be that the only thing holding us back these days is a lack of imagination---what would it look like at WFBC in 2015 if we expected greater things of God and then attempted greater things for God.” “We have got to go deeper, not wider. We don’t need to do more activity around here as much as we need to do what we are already doing with more commitment and focus and power. What if every leader of every ministry in this church—large or small—in the next few months got together and had some dream sessions where you asked the question—what would it look like if we went deeper and how do we do that?” “May I say it one more time—every ceiling in your life, in this church’s life, is one we have constructed. God’s specialty is tearing them down, but I believe He does that only when we expect that of Him. You want to see my heart? When people leave here on Sunday, when people drive by and see what is going on here, what I want more than you can ever imagine is that people will not say, ‘What a great church.’ They will say ‘What a great God.’ Now is our time. We are called to go deeper, we must go not just Beyond the Walls, we must go beyond the ceiling. Will you go with me?” Hope everyone will share in a church conference that is more than a church conference—October 18.

News from Minister of Education and Administration Dr. Jo Ann Stancil, Minister of Education and Administration, [email protected]

On the weekend of September 18-20, I had the opportunity to go to Savannah, Georgia for a training session on Women’s Ministry. Group Publishing sponsored this event which was held at Calvary Baptist Temple in Savannah. I was honored to be a part of this event as we studied Women’s Ministry goals and opportunities. I am thrilled to know that our church has seen the need and opportunity to have a ministry with women. We started a young women’s Bible study on Friday mornings in 2014. This ministry has grown to a Thursday night and Friday morning Bible Study because of the answer to a need by young moms. From that group, we were asked to provide an intergenerational ministry. So, in January of 2015, we formed a Women’s Ministry Team to plan a retreat and other ministries with that goal in mind. We held our first Women’s Retreat in March of 2015 where 42 women retreated at Fort Caswell from Friday night through Sunday lunch. Women had time to talk, pray, study God’s word, play silly games, be alone, sing, and just have a good time. The Women’s Ministry Team then planned a second event. We had a Garden Tea Party at the home of Mike and Leeann Tedder on July 18. At that event, we dressed in fun hats, ate delicious sandwiches, drank hot tea, and listened to Angela Foss as she reviewed her book. What a fun ladies’ day as we got to know even more women in our church, and heard a testimony from Angela on God’s faithfulness.

Right now, we are sponsoring a new ministry to women called “Mentoring.” We have women that have volunteered to mentor other women. The mentors have volunteered to be prayer partners, a listening ear, a walking friend, or whatever the mentoree needs. It is all about building relationships and growing in Christ. After attending the Group Publishing Women’s Ministry Conference, I know we are on the right track. We have had great events in the past year and have the opportunity to use new ideas to involve more women in new events like a cooking class, mother/daughter pajama party, prayer ministry, an ice cream sundae party, a quilt show, a coffee and chat party, a manicure party, a purse exchange, fondue parties, a parade of tables and many other opportunities for women in the future. I look forward to getting to know more women, encouraging women and sharing the love of Christ with women in our church and community. Be watching for the next FABULOUS event for the women of Wake Forest Baptist Church. You won’t want to miss it. If you have an idea, please feel free to share it with me. I love hearing new ideas!

The definition of a volunteer is one who of his own free will offers himself for a service or duty. There is a core of volunteers at our church that do just that. They give their time generously with the church office by answering the phone, making copies, laminating materials, greeting visitors, giving directions, hosting tours, passing out materials for Sunday School or other activities, selling tickets for the Virginia Tull series, or any other tasks that are needed. The church staff will be honoring our office volunteers on October 8 at 12:00 PM at the Stephenson Campus with a luncheon. We would like to tell you how much we appreciate your time, willingness to serve, and the love of your church. Please RSVP by October 6 to let us know you are coming. We look forward to celebrating you at this event.

Senior Adult Choir (Oct. 6, 13, & 27)

Senior Adult Choir meets on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 5th Tuesday at 10:30 AM in the Choir Room. We will sing and enjoy our time together as we prepare for ministry through music. Everyone over 60 is invited to sing with us.

Thirty senior adults will be going on the Great Smokey Mountain Train Ride on October 15-16. We will travel on a four hour train ride through the Nantahala Valley as we see the beautiful leaves and the magnificent Nantahala Gorge. Please pray for our safe journey as we take both our bus and van to Bryson City. November 19-20

Myrtle Beach, SC

Our seniors are sponsoring a trip to Myrtle Beach to see two Christmas shows. We will travel with Christian Tours on their luxury bus, see ‘Christmas at the Legends’ on Thursday night, spend the night after dinner at the Carolina Roadhouse, shop at Broadway at the Beach on Friday morning, then see ‘Carolina Opry Christmas Special’ on Friday afternoon before returning home. The costs are based on 30 folks from WFBC signing up: $295/double occupancy, $285/triple occupancy, $280/quad occupancy, $325/single occupancy. Register at the church office by October 15—$100 deposit is required to secure your spot. 1. If you are leading a meeting in any of our buildings, please lock the doors when you leave. 2. Anyone that locks a door in any of our buildings needs to pull/push on the door to ensure it is latched. Many times our doors close but don’t latch and need an extra pull/push. 3. Don’t walk on the red clay and then come in the new building. You will stain the new carpet in the classrooms. 4. You don’t have to turn the lights off in your classroom in the new building. The lights have an automatic sensor and will cut off by themselves. 5. The contractor is still working on the punch list for the new building. The goal is to have everything complete by October 10.

Music Ministry As we have all experienced many times before, anything involving construction inevitably must involve an “unexpected” delay. We have learned since the last update that our organ rebuilding project timeline has been revised. We do expect to have the new console, new switching system, and new fan/motor unit in place by the end of October. However, these new components will be temporarily connected to our existing pipes. The new pipes and the new additional stops of digital sounds will be installed in January. So what does this mean for us? We will gladly enjoy a functional organ in November and December but the sound will be exactly the same as before. It will be wonderful for Dr. Skinner to have a console that actually does what is expected when she pushes the various knobs, tabs, and switches. However, we will still not be able to combine other instruments with the organ because the pitch will not be at the standard frequency. After the new pipes and digital sounds are installed in January, we will enjoy a much wider variety of sound colors, textures, and timbre and most importantly, we will be able to use our organ in combination with the piano, handbells, and other instruments.

ORGAN UPDATE

Thank you for your continued patience as we await the wonderful new organ we will enjoy for many years to come!

Music with

Babies & Toddlers

I am so excited to announce that we will resume Music with Babies and Music with Toddlers on Thursday, October 8. Music with Babies will meet at 9:30 AM and Music with Toddlers will meet at 10:30 AM. Advance registration is required and there will be a modest materials fee. This experience is open to all interested individuals in our church and community. Research continues to demonstrate that music and movement are extremely important factors in early childhood development. I am so pleased that Wake Forest Baptist Church is committed to the well-being of the children and families of our church and community. Registration is available online on the Music Ministry page under ‘Children’s Music.’ or you can contact Bryant Moxley for more information

Composer Weekend with Joseph Martin October 3-4 It is with great joy and anticipation that we welcome Joseph Martin to Wake Forest Baptist Church on October 3-4 for what I believe is our third composer weekend. His music can be heard in such diverse locations as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City; Constitution Hall in Washington, Dc; the Lawrence Welk Theatre in Branson, Missouri; St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City; and in hundreds of worship services in churches across the United States and Canada. He continues to surprise audiences with the variety and scope of his compositions and arrangements. Recognized throughout the United States for his many choral compositions, both sacred and secular, Joseph’s music is published by numerous publishing houses. Over two thousand compositions are currently in print and the list continues to grow. While he is with us, Joseph will be leading our children, youth, men’s chorus, senior adult, and chancel choirs as they perform his compositions. Additionally, Joseph has received international acclaim as a pianist and will perform several of his arrangements in our worship services on October 4 and in the Worship Celebration Concert at 4:00 PM. Joseph is Artist-in-Residence at Concordia University in Austin, TX where he lives with is wife Sue, and his children, Jonathan and Aubrey. Simply put, this is an event you do not want to miss! It is our prayer that God will be glorified in a powerful way as we share together in the powerful, Christ-centered music of Joseph Martin. All students currently in Grades 7 & 8 are invited to this year’s Middle School All-Nighter! For those unfamiliar with the Middle School AllNighter, it is a fun night of worship, devotionals, games, and trips to fun places. Last year, we traveled to Adventure Landing for laser tag, bowling at Brooks Street Bowl, and to the Factory for paint your own pottery before worshiping together! Who knows what we will do this year? So get excited to be up late, be able to go to some fun places, be with your friends, and worship in the new Youth Center. The cost is $35 (just bring when you arrive). Contact Rob James with questions.

Youth Center Blessing Service On September 20, our youth, their families, and our adult volunteers gathered to bless the Youth Center in a special service of worship. This year’s youth choir sang, prayers were placed in the prayer wall, and we shared in communion for the first time in the Youth Center. As a part of this worship service, our youth added ‘capstones’ above the doorways to the space. These symbolize that Christ is our cornerstone and capstone, the foundation of all that our new Youth Center stands for. I would encourage everyone to visit the Youth Center to place your own prayers of blessing within the prayer wall. We are truly blessed to have such an amazing space to share in our faith.

Begins Friday, October 2 6:00—8:00 PM Youth Center Ichthus is a youth program designed just for 5th & 6th graders! Each Friday night, we gather together for games, worship, songs, and Bible studies that help this age group to: get the most out of worship, explore their faith, prepare for youth group, and learn what it means to be a Christian. Parents are encouraged to attend our first Ichthus meeting. Our other meetings this month will be October 16 & 30.

NC State Fair Ministry Opportunity: It's that time of year for WFBC to partnerwith the Raleigh Baptist Association to provide State Fair workers with 'hygiene kits', so that these itinerant workers can have their most basic of needs met. Children's and youth missions groups will have the opportunity to participate as a part of their Wednesday night upcoming missions activities, but we'd like to offer YOU the opportunity to participate as well. Here's all you need to know:  WHERE? Place your hygiene kits in one of the designated boxes in the fellowship hall, or by the elevator just outside the narthex, or make arrangements to get it to Esther Austin ([email protected]).  WHEN? Any time between now and Wednesday, October 7.  WHAT? In a quart or gallon-size Ziploc bag, place these 11 trial sized items (except as specified): toothpaste, toothbrush (regular size), shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, disposable razor (s), wash cloth, comb (no brushes), new ball point pen(s), & pocket-sized notepad.

Backpack Buddies provide healthy meals for children from food insecure homes. The children, selected by social workers and school guidance counselors, receive a backpack containing seven meals for the weekend. Our church will hold a food drive from September 19— October 11. Collection boxes for the items are in the Fellowship Hall and by the upstairs elevator near the sanctuary. This is a ministry for all ages! A list of items needed for the food drive can be found on our website on the ‘What’s Happening’ page. Please contact Sheila Brown (919-210-7179), Jennifer Taylor (919-622-8012), or Shannon McNeill (919-671-0752) with any questions. Thank you for supporting Backpack Buddies!

A word from our Deacons...Continuing to ‘Go Deeper’ 2015 Deacon Election:

On Sunday, October 11, our church membership will be jointly participating in the election of five deacons to serve for the 2016-2019 time period. This is one of the most important tasks that we as church members have. The name ‘Deacon’ originates from the Greek word ‘diakonos’ meaning servant or minister. In the early church, deacons were chosen as servants ensuring the physical needs of hunger were met. Likewise today, we select men and women to assist in ministering to both the physical and spiritual needs of all the members of the body of Christ. Each member will be receiving an information letter and ballot containing ten names of individuals from our nomination process that have agreed to serve if elected. Please prayerfully consider these individuals and select those five you feel might best serve and minister for the next three years. Our election process has been updated to include the provision for voting by paper ballot or electronically by email. All ballots must be signed and submitted by October 11. If you have questions related to the process, please do not hesitate to let me know.

—Gene Cross, WFBC Diaconate Nothing says ‘Happy Fall Y’all’ more than a house decorated with pumpkins and mums. This year, the Koinonia Foundation, which is celebrating its 25th year of serving neighbors in need, will host its first annual Fall into Autumn: Pumpkins, Mums & More event on the Wake Forest Historical Museum’s front lawn at 414 N. Main Street, Wake Forest. Locally grown flowers and pumpkins, as well as refreshments, will be available from 12:00—8:00 PM on October 2 and 8:00 AM—6:00 PM on October 3. Tommy Killebrew, President of the Koinonia Foundation and WFBC member, wants the event to be more than a fundraiser for the foundation. “Fall into Autumn is our way to meet families looking for a few essential fall items and to create awareness about this organization, all in a fun and friendly way,” said Killebrew. “Since all the proceeds will go towards Koinonia’s mission of helping our neighbors in need, people can come and purchase for a great cause.”

Fall into Autumn: Pumpkins, Mums & More October 2 & 3

Over the last quarter of a century, The Koinonia Foundation has given away hundreds of thousands of dollars to local people in crisis situations who are desperate for shelter, food, medical assistance, clothing or other needs. Because of its service to the community, The Koinonia Foundation was named WF Organization of the Year in 2010. More than 95% of funds raised during the year go directly to helping those in need. For more information about Koinonia and the Fall into Autumn event, visit www.koinoniawf.org. (The Koinonia Foundation was started by Wake Forest Baptist Church members in an effort to help those in need.)

Shannon is a huge Wolfpack fan and Shawn is a Tarheel, so they are a house divided. The Heaths are very grateful to the WFBC family for welcoming them with open arms as they have been long-time visitors. Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain Set in rural Grace County, North Carolina in a time of state-mandated sterilizations and racial tension, Necessary Lies tells the story of two women, seemingly worlds apart, but both haunted by tragedy. Jane and Ivy are thrown together and must ask themselves: how can you know what you believe is right, when everyone is telling you it’s wrong?

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM. Please contact Lori Hubbard at [email protected] to get on the email list for reminders and updates.
