onors are owners in Federation’s enterprise. Building donorship is the key to our longterm financial stability. Gifts to Federation’s Annual Campaign, endowment funding and specifically earmarked contributions are all ways to invest in the future of our community.

Under the leadership of Federation’s 2006 Annual Campaign co-chairs Nancy Grosfeld and Lawrence Lax, the community raised $36.5 million, including $4.3 million for the A. Alfred Taubman Challenge Fund. As research indicates, Jewish education and Jewish values carry through life decisions. To develop community leadership, Federation’s 2006 Annual Campaign supported Jewish day schools and congregational schools with an allocation of nearly $2.6 million. Federation’s Alliance for Jewish Education enriches curricula and assists schools with special needs grants, technology and professional development opportunities. Programs also are funded through Millennium endowments such as the Shiffman Family Tuition Assistance Fund, the Hermelin-Davidson Center for Congregational Excellence and the Madeleine H. and Mandell L. Berman Millennium Fund. This year, Federation completed a $9.3 million capital campaign for the Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit. The school will be renamed for Jean and Samuel Frankel, who provided the lead contribution to begin construction of the school’s permanent home in the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The Frankel’s gift was part of a $20 million landmark pledge to the Academy, the largest single gift in our community’s history. 5

ging in place with dignity. That’s a goal we all share, and Federation is committed to helping get us there. Federation’s Campaign dollars work to support a continuum of services to benefit older adults through the ElderLink network, which includes Jewish Home and Aging Services, Jewish Apartments and Services, Jewish Family Service, JVS, and the Jewish Community Center. This year, Federation funding, as well as special grants from endowment funds, such as the Irving A. Rubin Jewish Community Trust for the Elderly, provided $3.5 million in food and apartment subsidies, escorted transportation, living assistance and other vital services for thousands in the community. To help seniors stay active and independent in their own homes, Federation has been instrumental in creating and funding “Supportive Communities,” working in collaboration with its ElderLink network, and neighborhood partners in the Oak Park/Southfield area. Building support for its Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) programs and other vital services for seniors, Federation continues to seek and secure state and federal government grants to strengthen Jewish neighborhoods. Taking a more holistic view of the community as it ages, and given the expanding needs for “life-planning” for the well-being of older adults in our community, Federation is working to develop a new model of service. Building endowments also will help develop a centralized and comprehensive system for the community to address the needs of our aging population. 7

Inspiring Jewish journeys

ommitted to creating a sense of Jewish identity and close ties with Israel, Federation encourages affiliation with synagogues, Jewish schools and organizations. The stronger the ties, the better our collective power works to engage members of the community in Jewish life. Bringing families closer to Judaism also means bringing more people to Israel. In an extraordinary venture this past December, Federation led its first Family Mission to Israel, providing a once-in-alifetime experience for more than 600 family members of the community. Counting an additional five missions geared specifically to teens, young adults, educators and community leaders, and six cultural exchanges, Federation brought a total of 1,250 Detroiters to Israel this year. Keeping Israel safe has always been a Federation priority. In times of need, it is our mandate to deliver meaningful support, particularly to the communities of our Partnership 2000 Region of the Central Galilee. At the outbreak of war in July, Federation launched an Israel Emergency Fund, committing $15 million as an initial goal to help meet the most urgent needs of the people in the region and throughout the north of Israel. Thanks to a strong 2006 Annual Campaign achievement and an outpouring of gifts to the Israel Emergency Fund, Federation continues to address the extraordinary challenges in the region, while fulfilling its commitments to a variety of ongoing programs designed to close the gaps among youth-at-risk and other vulnerable populations. As Israel moves from a state of crisis to a state of rebuilding and recovery, our abiding partnerships in the North are more critical than ever. The Fred M. Butzel Award

Named for revered community leader Fred M. Butzel, established in 1951, the Fred M. Butzel Award is recognized as the highest honor the Detroit Jewish community can bestow upon its leaders.

Diane and Emery Klein

T

hink of Diane and Emery Klein and the adage comes to mind: to get things done, ask busy people. Ask the Kleins. No request is too large or too small, and no goal is insurmountable. Compassionate fundraisers, ardent supporters of all things Jewish, the Kleins are consummate volunteers. Sharing their passion for numerous Jewish causes and organizations, Diane and Emery now share the honor of Federation’s most prestigious recognition, the Fred M. Butzel Award. Many tributes have been paid to both Diane and Emery for their generosity and span of service to the community. Yad Ezra established its Volunteer of the Year Award in their honor. Together, they have been named as Yeshiva Beth Yehudah Guardians. Emery’s honors include the Yeshiva Beth Yehudah Golden Torah Award, the International Association of Hebrew Free Loans Maimonides G’Millut Chasodim Award, and the Bar Ilan Honorary Fellowship Award. Diane is a recipient of the Hadassah National Leadership Award and the Israel Bonds Lion of Judah Award. The Kleins are dedicated to an extended family of Jewish organizations. Both have served Federation for years as members of its Board and Executive Committee. Diane and Emery have held posts on a long roster of local Jewish boards, including Jewish

Apartments and Services, Jewish Family Service, JVS, Fresh Air Society, Jewish Community Council, Hadassah, Yad Ezra, Israel Bonds, Detroit Men’s ORT, Anti-Defamation League, and B’nai B’rith Hillel. Committed to education, they have established an Excellence in Education Fund to benefit Jewish educators. Born in Czechoslovakia and a survivor of the Holocaust, Emery is a self-made and innovative businessman. Described by many as “Mr. Solicitor,” Emery has served as chair of Federation’s Annual Campaign, president of Hebrew Free Loan Association and president and founder of MOPAC (Political Action Committee). Currently he is a national board member of AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee). A native Detroiter, Diane has served as president of Federation’s Women’s Department and president of the Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah. She has been a vice president of Federation and Fresh Air Society. Nationally, Diane serves on the United Jewish Communities Women’s Philanthropy and the JACPAC Board of Directors. She is a former member of the National Board of Hadassah. Married 38 years, Emery and Diane are the proud parents of Jeffrey (married to Cara) and Barbara (married to Dr. Ira Zaltz) and grandparents of Spencer, Griffin, Zoe and Isabel. 13

With a long and distinguished career in advertising, public relations and marketing in Detroit, Jim August has been a creative force in numerous Michigan-based and national Jewish organizations. One of the founders and the first President of the Jewish Ensemble Theater (JET) and as President of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, Jim has played a leading role in promoting Jewish culture in Detroit and beyond. An officer of the Federation Board, Jim also has served on the boards of Federation’s Alliance for Jewish Education, the Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, JVS, Men’s ORT, the Michigan Jewish Conference, Max M. Fisher Jewish Community Foundation, Project Renewal, ArtServe Michigan, Celebrate 350, Congregation Shaarey Zedek and Congregation Beth Shalom.

A Detroit attorney with a national reputation in bankruptcy and reorganization, Delegate-at-large at six Democratic National Conventions, Stuart Hertzberg jumped into Jewish communal work shortly after his first trip to Israel over 30 years ago. His long list of public posts includes: President of JVS, delegate to the Jewish Agency for Israel, officer of the Jewish Federation, board member of the United Jewish Foundation and United Israel Appeal, chair of the Jewish Population Study (1990), President of Commercial Law League America, Democratic National Committeeman, and Delegate-at-large for the Democratic National Conventions. His dedication to Federation includes serving as chair of the Community Service Division and chair of Federation’s Israel and Overseas committee.

The ultimate “professional volunteer” – fundraiser, activist, advocate, mentor – Ellen Labes describes her career with Federation as one of the most exciting journeys she’s ever taken. At the helm of Federation’s Women’s Department, as chair of Federation’s Lion of Judah, and as a founding member of the Jewish Women’s Foundation, Ellen has influenced and inspired women to move forward and up in leadership positions throughout the Federation and its partner agencies. A past cochair of Federation’s Commission on Jewish Eldercare Services, Ellen has served on the boards of Fresh Air Society, JARC, Jewish Community Council, Jewish Family Service, National Council of Jewish Women, the Sisterhood of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and Yad Ezra.

Staff member of the Jewish Community Center, with a longstanding leadership role in Federation’s Young Adult Division and Women’s Campaign and Education Department, Heidi Fischgrund Budaj is a founding co-chair of the PACT (Parents and Children Together) program in Netanya, Israel, and has served on the National Young Leadership Cabinet (United Jewish Communities). Currently Heidi also serves on the boards of Jewish Family Service and the B’nai B‘rith Youth Organization.

Real estate developer and builder, Mark Adler is a board member of the Jewish Federation and the United Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit, current chair of the Capital Needs Division, member of the Real Estate & Property Management and Planning and Allocations Committees, and a past chair of the Rabin Division. With a passion for bringing people to Israel, Mark served as a bus captain on Federation’s Family Miracle Mission. He also serves on the boards of the Fresh Air Society and B’nai B’rith Youth Organization.

Bloomfield Hills Attorney Lorne Gold is a board member and officer of Federation’s Young Adult Division and current chair of the YAD 2006 Annual Campaign. Involved in many Federation programs and initiatives, Lorne has played leading roles in Campaign Countdown, the Class of a Million Steering Committee, YAD Major Gifts, Shutafim L’atid Exchange to Israel and the Partnership 2000 Steering Committee. Lorne is also a board member of Jewish Family Service and serves as chair of its Development Committee.

Berman Award / Maas Prize / Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award

Established in 1988, the Mandell L. and Madeleine H. Berman Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of ­ professionals employed by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan  Detroit and its partnership agencies.

The Maas Prize is awarded annually to honor individuals or organizations whose work enhances Jewish life in Michigan. The categories in which the awards are given are performing arts, fine arts and humanities.

A national honor, established in 2000 by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and the Jewish Life Network/Steinhardt Foundation, this award recognizes outstanding Jewish educators who have demonstrated a career commitment to their field.

As founding director of the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives, Sharon Alterman is described by colleagues as a “gentle soul” with a love of history and a can-do spirit. Over the past 15 years, with her team of volunteers, Sharon has been a creative force in moving, organizing and bringing to life a collection that now occupies 3,000 linear feet, including the Sinai Hospital archives and a Jewish community Centennial exhibit preserved in the Max. M. Fisher Building and in the Reuther Library at Wayne State University. Sharon has created a truly magnificent community treasure, a legacy for generations to come.

Jeff Haas has spent 25 years composing and performing original music that combines his passion for Judaic, jazz and classical idioms. He received national attention with the release of his recording, “L’Dor VaDor”— Generation to Generation, an homage to his father. In 1997, he was commissioned by Federation to write an original jazz suite that he entitled “HaGesher Chai”– The Bridge Lives, a work that received numerous accolades. In 2004, he received the Sara Hardy Humanitarian of the Year Award. Jeff is extremely committed to transmitting awareness and understanding about Judaism and diversity through the universal language of music.

A gifted educator, joyous in her work in the classroom, Faye Ellen Friedman has been a pre-school teacher, devoted to her students at Adat Shalom Nursery School and Kindergarten, for 27 years. As she describes, her “first batch of students are now doctors, lawyers, teachers, with children of their own.” With a love of teaching and a deep felt sense of responsibility for nurturing her young students, Faye has touched hundreds of lives and earned the admiration and affection of the community.

Millennium Campaign for Detroit’s Jewish Future

Initiated in 1998 by the Jewish Federation and the United Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit, the Millennium Campaign for Detroit’s Jewish Future was established to enhance Jewish life in Detroit with a twofold goal: to promote Jewish education, congregational programming, culture and arts, identity and continuity for generations to come, and to redevelop, renew and transform the Jewish Community Center, building a true “center” of Jewish life for the entire community.
