Reflections around light Close your eyes. That is how easy it is to imagine a world without light. Light is essential for us to live and work and for millions of year’s daylight placed a natural limit on human activities. Edison’s light bulb changed everything. Electrical light suddenly made it possible for humans to use this technology on a large-scale to turn night into day. Fagerhult was established in 1945 and the knowledge we have gained throughout this period has given us unique insights into how light works and affects both people and the environment. The development of our new innovative lighting solutions combines the lessons of the past with the needs of the future. We have seen almost everything, but we have still not lost our child-like curiosity. And we can still change the world using light.

We know that light lifts our spirits Natural light helps us feel good, think and work better – we know this as fact. Research has shown on several occasions that artificial light can do the same thing. At Fagerhult we have not been passive in gaining this knowledge, working with leading academic institutions to further our understanding of the links between light and well-being.   By taking a holistic approach we can create healthy lighting environments which address not only the demands for productivity but also for energy efficiency and economy.

Customer perspective Fagerhult is one of Europe’s leading lighting manufactures, producing solutions for public spaces where people come together. Insight into our customers’ needs is both central to our approach and the basis for our success. We know everyone has different requirements when it comes to function, aesthetics and cost. By applying this insight from the beginning we have developed a wide range of luminaires suitable for varying demands.

Cutting edge technology Energy costs. It costs money and it cost the environment. The biggest expenditure of energy is when the luminaire is in use but this is not the only factor. Fagerhult is widely recognised as being a pioneer in efficient lighting. Not only producing high performance luminaires which minimise energy consumption but also considering and reducing the embodied energy produced through choice of materials, source of energy and processes of manufacture and transportation.

Swedish design Fagerhult is the essence of Swedish design. Our luminaires combine form and function, in a obvious fashion. Each line has a purpose and emphasises the experience and quality to be found inside the shell. Simplicity is an art – and we love the challenge.

Freedom Designed by Weikko Kotila and Julle Oksanen

Sketch your own lines with light! Freedom is an innovative LED luminaire that makes it possible to create free forms suspended in the air, on the ceiling and on the wall. With the help of two modules, one straight and one curved, the luminaire can be built up to follow the shape of the room or a creative concept, offering architects, interior and lighting designers full freedom of expression. The modules are based on two thin but very sturdy aluminium sections, one of which is bent along a radius of 1200 mm. Using a mixture of straight and curved luminaire modules, combinations can be built where the only limitation is the size of the room. The modules are designed for three different mounting options – suspended, surface or wall – which adds yet another dimension. Particular attention was paid towards toning down the technical solutions for the benefit of aesthetics, with discreet connections between the modules and terminating end caps. Following the same ambition, the power supply has been made more efficient so that one power feed covers up to six modules. Each wire is capable of carrying multiple modules, which contributes to an even purer expression when the luminaire is suspended.   Freedom sets itself apart with a light treatment that is uncommon in the sector. The luminaire is not only a decorative solution but provides a full general lighting solutions in its own right. LED is the key to the design of Freedom but a great emphasis has also been placed on the lighting technology. The innovative reflector and opal diffuser safeguards against glare or a blinding light.

Multilume Flat Multilume Flat is amongst the first LED luminaires to be more efficient than its T5 equivalent; producing more than 80 lumens per watt while still retaining optimal lighting ergonomics. The LED evolution of the Multilume range offers a recessed mounted solution for general office lighting.

Encompassing a range of innovative features, Multilume Flat was developed to make the planning and installation processes easier, in a construction industry where margins are becoming ever tighter. Advancing from a downlight application, Multilume Flat transforms LED’s into a viable solution for full general lighting with the capacity to replace its T5 incumbents. A generous number of closely positioned diodes work in unison to provide a light which can be shaped by the choice of louvre. The micro-prismatic Delta closely controls the intensity of the light, achieving the requirements for 3000 cd/m². The Opal alternative provides a crisp light and a somewhat whiter surface. To further enhance its efficiency the luminaire can be optimised for lighting control, reacting to both incidental daylight and human presence.   As part of a holistic approach, Multilume Flat has been designed to address the tight time requirements and restricted ceiling heights in many construction projects. The luminaire is only 50 mm high and has a flexible ballast box attached by Velcro which can be detached and positioned next to the luminaire. The frame consists of an aesthetic but sturdy aluminium profile which contributes towards the clean line aesthetic prevalent in contemporary architecture. Multilume Flat is available in three different module designs; two square and one rectangular. As with all Fagerhult’s LED luminaires, Multilume Flat is updated each year with the latest generation LEDs, ensuring our customers always have access to the most up-to-date technology.

3–4. The connection cable between the luminaire and ballast box is sufficiently long to permit the ballast box to be positioned either side of the luminaire or next to it, if the space above the suspended ceiling is restricted.

2

5. The ballast box has two cable entries for connection, providing the option for onward connection. 6. Models for suspended ceilings with concealed T-bars have brackets on one side that are folded over the suspended ceiling profile once the luminaire has been positioned into the ceiling. Suitable for suspended ceilings with concealed T-bars where the ceiling boards are fitted symmetrically.

3

4

Wrap Designed by Ola Granlund and Leif Igelström

Wrap takes its unique appearance from having all of its surfaces shaped by the technical content. The casing sits tightly around the components, just as if it were made of shrink wrap. Just by looking at the luminaire you understand how it works – that light is distributed both downwards and upwards.

Wrap builds on a design concept of emphasising the lighting technology and function, instead of trying to hide it. Without compromising on light treatment or energy efficiency, the material consumption has been minimised without trapping unnecessary air under the casing. The shape is reinforced by the distinctive end cap which provides visual weight and stability.   Wrap is a complete system for general and work lighting in public places with high demands on aesthetics and energy efficiency; available in ceiling-mounted and suspended models in both single and continuous versions.   Wrap offers maximum control. Both the direct and indirect output can be adjusted independently, with each distribution equipped with its own light source. The inclusion of a multi-ballast offers the flexibility to change between the wattages of lamps of the same size, even after installation. The ceiling model, which is intended for general lighting, provides a predominately direct light. The slot in the sides of the luminaire housing releases a small amount of indirect light onto the ceiling; creating a soft incidental ambience.

Vidi Designed by Ola Granlund and Leif Igelström

Vidi is an innovative corridor lighting solution based on a totally new way of providing light. By increasing the proportion of incidental light it is possible to create a more varied experience and a clearer sense of space. Vidi is available in three models; ceiling, corner and wall luminaires, with different light distribution and mounting options. All presented in a contemporary, minimalist design. The need for glare-free lighting is particularly great in corridors and other transition areas. The concept has been developed for optimal lighting ergonomics and satisfies the future EN-12461-1 requirements for ceiling and wall luminance, as well as other visual aspects. A higher proportion of reflected light produces a soft, pleasant lit environment and contributes to a dynamic perception of the room. The increase in the ambient levels ensures the whole area is lit where people are moving about, making it easier to perceive objects and to see the faces of people you encounter.   The luminaires in the Vidi-family are characterised by an understated yet stylish design, adding aesthetic qualities to the most diverse environments. The luminaire housing has clean, simple lines and steps away from the traditional corridor lighting – an insightful and proactive way of creating well-lit rooms with human comfort very much at the centre.

Vidi 1. Vidi is available as a ceiling, corner or wall luminaire.     The ceiling luminaire is designed to be mounted in the middle of the ceiling. The light is distributed across the ceiling and towards the wall, allowing it to then be reflected down to the floor. The high proportion of reflected light provides a pleasant lit environment and contributes to a dynamic spatial experience.     Vidi corner and wall models follow the same basic concepts with some variation in light distribution in consideration to it’s position. The wall luminaire is complemented by a frosted surface that provides further shielding. The corner model is mounted in the angle between the ceiling and the wall and is suitable in situations where you want to avoid mounting directly on the suspended ceiling.

2. The inner end caps of the Vidi-family are made of opal plastic which provides a comfortable luminance instead of a dark surface. 3. The outer frame of the luminaire is equipped with lock wires. The frame remains in the body when the luminaire opens out, simplifying maintenance and changing fluorescent tubes. 4. Vidi 2 has a special mount for quick and easy installation in visible T-bars.

LED Handrail LED Handrail is a brand new way to integrate light into architecture – in or outdoors. The sleek aluminium handrail creates a cohesive, bright line that enhances the design of the space, whether it is a hall, a courtyard or a park. The wide choice of options ensures there is a solution for virtually any design concept.

The railing is a unique combination of functions made possible by the new LED technology. The luminaire is not only decorative but also provides a functional light across stairs and walkways. Harnessing the benefits of LED, the handrail ensures both a low power consumption (10 W/m) and a lifespan of 50 000 hours. With the modules in lengths ranging from 1 to 4.5 metres it is possible to combine a number of handrails to exactly the right length. The sections can be built up to 12 meters, but in environments where the ambient temperature is changeable; a break will be needed to allow for heat expansion. Each section ends with the stylish end-caps included in the range of accessories. A sleek appearance belies the fact that the railing is very robust with strength class IK10. The design is also carefully shaped to protect electrical and mechanical parts against rust and moisture, and meet the requirements of IP 44.

Pleiad G3 Pleiad G3 is the third generation of Fagerhult’s successful downlight range – now equipped with LED. In common with its predecessors, the focus was placed upon perfect lighting treatment, quick installation and efficiency. In G3 these concept has been taken to the next level, including automatic installation! The energy efficiency and long lifespan of LEDs come at the price of higher demands on the distribution and shielding, as a result of the increased light intensity. To combat these issues G3 was developed using an innovative reflector technology, fully exploiting the efficiency of LEDs, without affecting the lighting ergonomics. The family contains numerous options for different light distributions, complemented by an extensive range of practical and decorative accessories.   Speed and ease of installation has long been synonymous with the Pleaid range and G3 takes this one step further. The luminaire can be installed without any manual effort. The housing needs only be placed in the right position and then installed automatically with the help of gravity technology. The rapid installation, combined with high efficiency and long life, ensures Pleiad G3 is an economical choice with a beneficial pay-off time.

Pleion The same efficiency – different aesthetics. Pleion is a series of downlights equipped with advanced lens technology, specially formulated for the LED light source. The lenses allow a wide range of beam angles, with minimal glare. Offering increased design freedom. Pleion provides the same functions as a traditional downlight but by replacing the internal reflector with lenses, we have created a luminaire with a completely new aesthetic expression. The lenses ensure that the intense LED light is distributed in an efficient and pleasant manner. Pleion is available in three sizes with three, five or seven lenses; offering three different lumen packages to cover different lighting needs. Pleion can be rotated 360° and tilted 30° to accentuate walls and objects, making it possible to create a varied general light using only downlights. Common with all Fagerhult downlights Pleion is easy to install, helping to reduce value time onsite.

Hekla Cool on the surface with a glowing inner! Hekla is an easy-to-position interior luminaire that draws its character from an intriguing combination of materials and surfaces. Available in pendant, ceiling and wall variations, Hekla offers a complete luminaire family characterised by excellent uniformity.

Hekla is based on two hand-blown glass cylinders placed inside each other and held together by a silver metal frame. The inner clear glass has a white coloured interior surface, while the outer glass is completely clear. The solution ensures a well shielded light source and comfortable light, while simultaneously creating a decorative display when the light plays between the two cylinders. Shape and materials are reminiscent of a modern storm-lantern without the luminaire seeming too exclusive or lightweight because of it.   Hekla is available in three styles and various sizes: a pendant luminaire in two heights, a ceiling luminaire in one height and a wall luminaire in two heights. The wall version is equipped with a specially designed bracket, which creates a distance between the luminaire and surface and the impression that the luminaire is floating.

by applying a phosphor based coating to a blue diode, either directly on the diode or on a separate plate over it. This coating converts some of the blue light to white light of various colour temperatures - a process that is reminiscent of how a standard fluorescent tube works. The quality of the light is determined both by the specification of the blue LED and by

how carefully the phosphor is matched to the selected diode. White diodes come in a wide range of colour temperatures, from warm white to very cold (2700–8000 K). Because a blue LED is the basis of the white light, efficiency is greater for colder colour temperatures. To obtain a warmer colour temperature, the phosphor must convert a larger proportion of the original blue light. Colour rendering (Ra) depends on the choice of LED and varies from 60 to 95. A high Ra typically entails a slightly lower luminous efficacy.

contain mercury. Luminous efficacy and bins The luminous efficacy of LEDs is indicated in lm/W (lumens per watt), which is a measure of efficiency. In this area, there is a process of continuous improvement, and rapid progress is being made. Today, the luminous efficacy of white LEDs is at a level equivalent to ordinary fluorescent tubes. These improvements create the opportunity for even more luminaire solutions and applications. However, it is important to distinguish between data for separate LEDs and those for complete luminaire solutions.   The data presented by LED manufacturers generally refer to the maximum luminous efficacy of a cold LED. No account has been taken of losses due to increased temperature, the ballast's own consumption, or losses in the reflectors or lenses.   The luminous efficacy of a poorly designed LED luminaire, or one driven by an inferior ballast, can be more than halved compared with the nominal value of the LED. The luminous efficacy is, therefore, only relevant if it relates to the whole system.   LED production provides a large variation in both colour temperatures and luminous flux. The variations are so great that it is absolutely essential to select from a limited range. This method of selection is called binning. LED manufacturers divide the output

Colour quality The colour quality of an LED is best defined in MacAdam ellipses in Standard Deviation of Colour Matching (SDCM) as per the CIE 1964 standard. The MacAdam system originates from the United States and ranks colour quality on a scale of 0 to 10. Between 0 and 4 is it difficult to see differences in colour, but further up the scale it can have an obvious and negative disparities. The problems are greatest

from production into different groups, depending on performance. The narrower the selection process, e.g. by only accepting LEDs from a single bin, the more even the product quality will be. The disadvantage is that the price increases and availability decreases. Normally, attempts are made to choose and accept LEDs from a number of neighbouring bins.

Light regulation The regulation of LED light is managed using ballasts with pulsewidth modulation (PWM). The connected load is run by a technology consisting of a square wave with varying frequency. The load is switched on and off with a high frequency, which gives the impression that the light level changes. PWM ballasts are available with

various types of control interfaces, such as DALI, DSI, DMX 512 and switchDIM. Separate PWM units are also available, which can serve as connections between constant voltage and the load. Presentation of LED luminaires The luminous efficacy of LEDs, lm/W (lumens per watt, a measure of efficiency), is constantly improving and developing rapidly. This means that both the technical lighting data and electrical data are regularly updated. The data we present in printed catalogues should, therefore, always be checked against those we report on our website.
