Hotel accessibility pack Emergency Fire Evacuation Procedure for Impaired Guests If the alarm bell rings – please be aware this may be a real fire situation. We recommend that you stay in your room until a member of staff reaches you. They will be sent immediately after the bell rings. The staff member will knock on your door and enter using fire master key. They will assist you either to a refuge area or directly outside. If you are assisted to a refuge point further instructions will be issued from the fire co-ordinator through our staff member. Please do not stop to collect personal belongings- if you need medication please collect it and keep it safe. The refuge areas are signed at their location just before the main fire escape stairs on the far left and far right fire escape routes. In the unlikely event that our staff does not reach your room, please carefully open the door and check your exit to the refuge. If it is blocked with fire or smoke, go back into your bedroom and close the door. The bedroom doors offer one hour fire resistance. We will inform the fire service of your location when they arrive. PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK THE DOOR WITH ANYTHING INCLUDING TOWELS. This will prevent the fire service entering quickly. PLEASE DO NOT OPEN ANY WINDOWS. This can increase air circulation smoke and flames.

If the fire is in your room – get out and close the door behind you, breaking a red call point if possible on your way out. When at the refuge you will be assisted to the nearest safe lift. The evacuation is structured to help people who are nearest to a fire location. If you are moved to the lifts and are waiting – this is because you are in no immediate danger. We will evacuate in priority order from the fire areas first. In case of manual evacuation down fire stairs, we will transfer you into a lightweight evacuation chair and carry you down the stairs and outside. When you are outside we will transfer you to a comfortable chair, so we can reuse the evacuation chair to help others. Thank you for your co-operation with our fire procedures. If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to ask for the duty manager. Yours Sincerely, THE WALDORF HILTON

When you check in, please let the front office team know what level of help you would need in case of a fire evacuation, we do have a Personal emergency evacuation Plan form to be filled out according to your needs. If the alarm bell rings, this will be a continuous siren-like sound. If you are in your room, please stay there. We will send 2 members of staff to your room immediately. He or she will knock on your door, and enter using a ‘fire key’. They will then stay with you until the manager on duty gives them further instructions. When you leave your room, please do not stop to collect your personal belongings other than medication that you may need. If we need to use the fire stairs, we will transfer you into a lightweight evacuation chair and carry you down the stairs and outside. If a member of staff cannot reach your room, carefully open the door and check your route to the main hotel staircase. This will be signposted on each floor. If it is blocked or if there is smoke, go back into your room and close the door. The door to your room is fire resistant for one hour. As soon as the fire brigade arrives, we will tell them your room number. Do not block the door with anything, including towels, as this will prevent the fire brigade from entering your room. Do not open any windows as this can increase the air circulating and increase smoke and flames. If the fire is in your room, get out and close the door behind you, breaking a fire alarm call point if possible on your way out. We test the fire alarms on Mondays at 10.30am. The siren will sound for no more than 10 seconds, 3 times.
