The Feast of The Holy Name JANUARY 1, 2017 AT 10:00 A.M. SaintJamesCathedral.org

65 East Huron Street, Chicago, Illinois 60611 Phone 312-787-7360

Welcome to St. James Cathedral! Whether you are here for the first time, or are a regular worshipper, we are delighted to have you with us. If you are new to us and you would like to learn about the mission and ministry of the cathedral, or you would like us to be in contact with you, please complete one of the visitor cards available in the pews. You can place the completed card in the offering plate or hand it to an usher or member of the clergy. This order of service is designed to help you participate in today’s liturgy. Everything you need is contained in this booklet. Children in Worship We welcome your children to participate in our worship. As an alternative, we offer nursery care during the service and have a changing station there for your use. We have created an open space to the front right of the pews for young ones to play under your supervision. Today’s children are tomorrow’s adult worshippers, and we deeply value their presence. Holy Communion We offer God’s gracious gift of Holy Communion to all those present who wish to receive it. If you prefer simply to receive a blessing, come forward and indicate so by crossing your arms over your chest. Please follow the direction of the ushers when it is time to come forward. If you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer, please let the priest know. We are also very happy to bring Communion to people in the pews, if you are concerned about being able to come to the altar rail. Please let an usher know if this would be helpful for you. We serve fair trade communion wine from South Africa. Parking Reduced-rate parking is available Sundays at R.O.W. Parking Garage, 50 E. Ohio, for $2 for up to six hours from the time of entering the garage. Discounts are also available for all-day parking at Ohio Ontario Self Park, 33 W. Ontario for $9. To receive a reduced-rate parking voucher, please go to the Welcome Center desk following the service. For your information Restrooms are located below the narthex at the Wabash Avenue entrance of the cathedral and in the Welcome Center connected to the east end of the cathedral. And we hope you will stay for refreshments after the service!

COLLECT OF THE DAY Presider All Presider

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Eternal Father, you gave to your incarnate Son the holy name of Jesus to be the sign of our salvation: Plant in every heart, we pray, the love of him who is the Savior of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. Please be seated.

Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians. (4:4–7) When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. All

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon All

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. (2:15–21) Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. All

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

SERMON

The Rev. Jacqueline Soltys Curate

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for the Church and for the world. Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace, especially our president, Barack Obama, our president-elect, Donald Trump, our governor, Bruce Rauner, and our mayor, Rahm Emanuel; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Guide the ministry of our bishop, Jeffrey Lee, our presiding bishop, Michael Curry, and all those who serve in your name, that they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, and spirit, especially for Sue Chappell, Alice Horton, and those we name silently or aloud. You are invited to add additional names. Give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Guide our awareness of and response to those in need in our neighborhoods, in our city, in our country, and in our world. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

9

We commend to your mercy all those known and loved within our own community who have died, including John Radomsky, and for those who died as victims of gun violence last week in Chicago. May your will for them may be fulfilled, especially those we name silently or aloud. You are invited to add additional names. We pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. The Presider adds a concluding Collect, saying Heavenly Father, you have promised to hear what we ask in the Name of your Son: Accept and fulfill our petitions, we pray, not as we ask in our ignorance, nor as we deserve in our sinfulness, but as you know and love us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN Presider

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Presider concludes with an absolution.

PEACE The Presider says to all present All

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

All may greet one another in the name of the Lord.

GREAT THANKSGIVING Presider All

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Presider All

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Presider All

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore with all the angels of heaven we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name and sing our joyful hymn of praise:

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS

Hymnal S130

12

Music:

From Deutsche Messe, Franz Peter Schubert (1797–1828); arr. Richard Proulx (b. 1937)

13

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER The Presider introduces the Lord’s Prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

COMMUNION ANTHEM

“The Shepherd’s Farewell”

Hector Berlioz (1803–1869)

Thou must leave Thy lowly dwelling, the humble crib, the stable bare. Babe, all mortal babes excelling, content our earthly lot to share. Loving father, Loving mother, shelter Thee with tender care! Blessed Jesus, we implore Thee with humble love and holy fear. In the land that lies before Thee, forget not us who linger here! May the shepherd’s lowly calling, ever to Thy heart be dear! Blest are ye beyond all measure, thou happy father, mother mild! Guard ye well your heav’nly treasure, The Prince of Peace, The Holy Child! God go with you, God protect you, Guide you safely through the wild! – Berlioz

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Please stand. The Presider says Let us pray.
