Encoders Cost Effective Encoders HMK precision made robust Encoders are manufactured with the widest possible range of mounting arrangements, pulse resolutions, output circuits and voltage levels. Due to production streamlining and standardisation, all these features are available from stock or on short deliveries, at economical prices. When it comes to replacement Encoders, HMK can quickly provide interchangeable units for most European and American devices. HMK being also a supplier of control systems, is in a unique position to advise customers as to choice of Encoder for each application.
General Information All HMK Encoders have discs manufactured from Opto plastic up to 3600 ppr and glass above this level. Sensing is performed by LED and phototransistors via fringe grating. These features ensure a long life and resistance to shock and vibration. Double ball bearings are also used to give a rigid and robust construction.

5v TTL differential Line Driver (Circuit 6) can be used up to 25m max with a 5.5v supply (up to 25 kHz max). This always comes with complementary signal output. 5v TTL Differential Line Drivers can be used up to 1000m, so long as the 5v supply is generated at the Encoder end (to avoid voltage drops). Circuit 9 is available, which incorporates a 5v regulator, capable of operating from 9-24v controller supply. The signal fed back is a differential 5v and if high voltage signals (single ended) are required, HMK will supply a line receiver/level changer LR100. The differential line driver circuits provide the highest level of noise immunity and should always be used above 25kHz. We recommend the use of differential line drivers for equipment to meet CE European Directives.
Enclosure Protection All Encoders incorporate sealed bearings. The enclosure class quoted eg IP65, excludes the connector mate. Connector mates have a classification of their own as listed in Accessories section. To achieve IP66 and 67, it is necessary to fit additional shaft seals and since this class cannot be effected in the connector mate, we recommend that when IP66/67 is required, a cable gland is used.
Mounting To avoid damage to Encoder bearings and optics, Encoders must be carefully assembled onto a machine. Shafted Encoders must be rigidly mounted, with shaft centres lined up and concentric. A torsionally rigid flexible coupling must be used. Rigid couplings are unacceptable. Hollow shaft Encoders must be mounted onto shafts with run-out tolerance in accordance with DIN42955-N. The shafts should have the chosen diameter with tolerance g6. Only flexible torsionally rigid mounting arms must be used (HMK supply one with every Encoder). Bolting rigidly to machine face is unacceptable.

Pulse Form The quadrature displacement of A and B channels is 90˚ electrical, +/– 10%. The Z marker is gated with channel A, unless specified otherwise. The sequence of pulses is B before A, when rotating shaft clockwise, when viewed from shaft end.

All Encoders should be connected to a controller using quality screened cable. The screen should be open (i.e. insulated) at the encoder end, and tied to ground at the controller. The high voltage Universal Line Driver (Circuit 7) can be used up to 25m (up to 25 kHz max) in single-ended mode, or 100m in differential mode with a correctly terminated differential receiver. This circuit should be used in place of NPN, PNP, Push/Pull and CMOS Line Driver, to provide low impedance switching high and low.

Description Serial Absolute Encoders are available with a wide range of interfaces. Here we feature two most popular formats (SSI and Profibus) but CAN and Interbus are also available. The specification below is in outline only and full detailed data sheets are available on request. All types are available in single and multiturn configuration.

Series A930 Profibus DP Absolute Encoder
Series A940 SSI Absolute Encoder
The Encoder is designed to meet Profibus DP requirements according to European standard EN50 170. It will support all class 1 and 2 functions. It will thus interface with all diverse Profibus devices. It is available with 3 gland connector box, for easy site cabling.
SSI Absolute Encoders utilise less electronic components and communicate the signal with less cabling, compared to parallel Absolute Encoders. They provide a high level of noise immunity at high resolutions and frequency.
