High Definition TV Lenses Canon has always developed new technology with three basic philosophies, "High Quality of Images", "Ease of Operation" and "High Specification". Canon's HDTV lenses are, so to speak, a compilation of our basic philosophies. The addition of the new XJ75x and XJ72x (for studio/field use) and new Electronic Cinematography zoom and prime lenses make Canon the only manufacturer to offer such a complete line of HDTV lenses to match our customers requirements. Complete "Customer Satisfaction" is our goal.
The newly improved HDxs Series
New Generation DIGITAL SERVO SYSTEM
Canon has developed the improved HDxs lens series. The new generation of HDxs lenses exceeds all conventional lens specifications and concepts by using breakthrough technologies. HDxs allows for higher specification lenses in a smaller and lighter package. •Consistent high optical performance is achieved with minimized aberration changes throughout the zooming range from wide angle to telephoto. •Minimized chromatic aberrations at telephoto focal length in higher zoom ratio lenses. •Improved operability due to very little shift in the center of gravity. •The body has anti-dust and anti-moisture properties due to a sealed focusing unit. •All of this in a lens in comparable size and weight of a conventional NTSC/PAL lens.
(DIGI SUPER Series) Canon's new generation digital servo system has allowed the use of many new functions such as constant angle of view while focusing "CAFS" and the selection of different servo characteristics by using of a memory card(option). These functions are only possible with a digital servo system. In addition to these new functions, up-grading will be possible when other new functions become available in the future. Also the DIGI SUPER Series achieve 13 bit zoom and focus repeatability and offer bi-directional serial data communication in order to realize highly accurate and smooth movement which is essential for robotics and virtual studio applications. The digital servo system is reliable, consistent and is not affected by electric interference. Focus

X-Element & POWER OPTICAL SYSTEM Canon has developed breakthrough optical design concept using a newly developed optical element in the most effective way. The "Power Optical System" can achieve higher specifications and quality, using the new optical "X-Element" which corrects color aberration to a much lower level than with conventional optical elements and layouts.
Digital Servo System
"CAFS" Constant Angle Focusing System (DIGI SUPER Series) The zooming effect is a phenomena where the picture size (angle of view) changes when focusing. However, a 32 bit CPU calculates and controls the zoom when focusing in order to counteract this phenomena. Consequently the angle of view is maintained by synchronizing zoom movement to the focus movement.

IMAGE STABILIZER
The history of field lenses is a history of zoom ratio/focal extension. The telephoto focal lengths of the lens got so long that even the slightest amount of wind or operator's movement would cause image shake and viewing of the picture became intolerable. Canon, renowned for its optical image stabilization technologies developed a new stabilization solution for the broadcast field lens, a built-in Optical Shift Image Stabilizer (Shift-IS) to overcome image shaking at telephoto focal length. Now the Shift-IS is employed in the DIGISUPER 86TELE xs, DIGISUPER 86 xs, DIGISUPER 75 xs, HJ40x14B IASD-V and HJ40x10B IASD-V. How the Optical Shift Image Stabilizer (Shift-IS) Works When the lens moves, the light rays from the subject are bent relative to the optical axis, resulting in a blurred image because the light rays are deflected. By shifting the IS lens group on a plane perpendicular to the optical axis to counter the degree of image shake, the light rays reaching the image plane can be steadied. Since image shake occurs in both horizontal and vertical directions, two shake-detecting sensors for yaw and pitch, detect the angle and speed of movement and send this information to a high-speed 32-bit microcomputer, converts the information into drive signals for the IS lens group. Then actuator moves the IS lens group horizontally and vertically and thus counteracting the image shake and maintaining a stable picture.

The Features of Digital Drive Canon's HDxs technology is now better than ever, with the addition of "Digital Drive", the all-new ENG/EFP lens servo system available throughout the Canon line of HDTV lenses, that represents the most useful features ever incorporated into digital tools by far. The concept of Canon's "Digital Drive" is based on "Ease of Operation" for our customers. 1. Three preset functions
"Digital Drive" provides the following "three preset functions" that have become possible with digital technology. Speed Preset A zoom speed agreed on during rehearsal can be reproduced accurately. The preset memory is not automatically cleared and can be repeated as many times as needed.
Shuttle Shot At the touch of a button, this feature allows the operator to zoom back and forth instantly between any two positions at the maximum speed in either direction. It can be used for zooming to either the tele-side or wider focal length from any starting point to check the picture, then return instantly to the original focal length. You can "shuttle" between any two zoom positions as you like.
Framing Preset A movement to a preset position can, again, be repeated multiple times. The preset memory is not automatically cleared and the agreedon framings from rehearsal can be duplicated over and over in an actual production, at the maximum speed or at any desired preset zoom speed memorized in the speed preset function.
2.Zoom Track
A new feature has been added to our "Useful" Digital Drive, called "Zoom Track". It allows the camera operator to adjust the electronic focal length to their desired range by memorizing zoom positions at both the tele and the wide side of the zoom.
One of several operational curves can be chosen which will allow different zoom movement characteristics when operating the seesaw switch. This is accomplished as a linear adjustment as opposed to an adjustment done in steps.

HD Electronic Cinematography Lenses Canon proudly introduces our new HD-EC line of zoom and primes lenses, "essential tools" that combine outstanding performance and greater function for our customers. All of the HD-EC lenses utilize Hi-UD (Hi Index, Ultra Low Dispersion) glass and Fluorite to achieve lower aberrations, while exhibiting very high MTF. The HD-EC zoom lenses have been refined using Canon's exclusive Power Optical System featuring the "X-Element", a unique system that combines exceptional performance with enhanced specifications. The HD-EC prime lenses exhibit high MTF, high resolution and high contrast from the center of the image to its extreme edges, an important benefit of Canon's new propriety design techniques. All lenses have traditional film style feel and operation. This includes dual large luminous scales for the zoom, focus and iris and industry compatible gear rings. Zoom Lens

How different are HDTV lenses? Overall Comparison between the SDTV and the HDTV System
Sensitivity of the HDTV System Two factors have to be considered to compare the sensitivity of the HDTV system with that of the HDTV NTSC/PAL 16:9 4:3 conventional system. The first factor that the HD camera has an aspect ratio of 16:9 (Fig.2). This makes the sensitive area smaller and causes a 10% difference in sensitivity. The second factor is related to the HDTV system's depth of field, which is Fig.2 half of the conventional system. Therefore, on HD cameras, the lenses must be stopped down until their F-number becomes double in order to get the same depth of field as that in the conventional system. This reduces the sensitivity to one fourth (1/4).

Whereas one frame of the conventional SDTV (ie NTSC) system consists of 480 scanning lines, the number of scanning lines is more than 1.5 times that for the HDTV system. Furthermore the density of the scanning lines are even higher because the HDTV system has an aspect ratio of 16:9, which is wider and shorter in height than that of the normal SDTV (4:3 aspect ratio) system. The spatial frequency required for the HDTV system is about twice that required for the NTSC system (Fig.1). Overall, the resolution of the HDTV system is about twice that of the NTSC system, and therefore the lens requires much higher performance than conventional lenses.

Aberration Correction for HDTV Leneses The pixel size is about half in the HDTV system, and therefore the spread of a point image caused by a spherical aberration, coma, etc. should be diminished to about half. Even if the image is slightly out of focus, MTF is greatly influenced. NTSC 400TVL (30lp/mm) HDTV 600TVL (55lp/mm) F1.6 Fig3 shows how MTF varies when the focus changes. Canon HDxs series lenses employ the HD version of the Power Defocus(mm) Fig.3 Optical System, which incorporates the X-element. HDxs greatly contributes to correcting and minimizing these aberrations in a compact lightweight lens body. 100

The Depth of Field for HDTV System
As the HDTV system has high resolution, even a small outof-focus area can be detected. Since the radius of the permissible circle of confusion is about half that of the conventional system, the depth of field becomes proportionately smaller. Therefore, the focusing has to be done with great care.
