About the Welsh Refugee Council

Helping Refugee and Asylum Seekers rebuild their lives in Wales

The Welsh Refugee Council is an independent charity and the lead agency working for refugees and asylum seekers in Wales. We work to help refugees and asylum seekers to rebuild their lives in Wales through the provision of confidential and independent, specialist advice and support services in Cardiff, Wrexham, Swansea and Newport, we are also the coordinator of Refugee Week Wales. We are guided by the core principle that the right to seek asylum is a fundamental human right as stated in the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, and it is our humanitarian duty to actively participate in saving the lives of people who, by force, have to flee their homeland in search of their basic human rights.

We advocate for: The right to seek asylum under the 1951 UN Refugee Convention and access to high quality legal advice when making an asylum claim. Basic support to all asylum seekers as and when is needed, and that no one is unnecessarily pressured to return to an unsafe country. Age assessments to be carried out within a child centric framework that places the best interests of the child first and foremost. The circumstances of victims of violence or persecution to be fully considered in the development of Government policies and an end to the policy of enforce destitution fro refused asylum seekers. The protection of women in the asylum process, recognition of gender-based persecution and full implementation of the women’s asylum charter. Adherence to the principles of non-refoulement in order that where a person is in danger that falls outside of the UN Refugee Convention, they can be granted humanitarian protection or other status.

Message from the Chief Executive Welcome to the Welsh Refugee Council’s second instalment of the service directory for organisations within the third sector and statutory partners delivering services to refugees and asylum seekers. Within our sector, there are a number of organisations which provide effective support services to vulnerable people. The directory is a compilation of organisations that currently provide support services to asylum seekers and refugees, whose position of vulnerability creates the drive to support people’s right to apply for asylum. It is important that these services are widely advertised and easy to access so that people can be signposted and receive support as quickly as needed. We are happy to report that following dissemination of the first directory, we received great responses from the sector sparking new interests and contributions to this latest version. Once again, we would like to thank the Welsh Government, UKBA and our other funders, for their support of our work. This support helps to ensure that asylum seekers understand the process and ensure that their needs are met. It also supports the effective inclusion of refugees in Wales and the wide range of influencing work which we currently undertake. How to the use the directory

Helping Refugee and Asylum Seekers rebuild their lives in Wales

If you want to find an organisation within a specific category of the sector, please use the table of contents page. However, if you know the name of your organistion, please refer to the index section at the back of the directory. There you will be guided to the page number of your organisation. Many organisations fall within two or three categories of the directory because they offer combined service and support, therefore you may have to look through a few categories to find the organistion you want. Below is an explanation of some categories which may be unfamiliar: 1. Asylum Support and Statistics Organisation that provide direct or indirect asylum support as well as gather and disseminate information on asylum statistics. 2. Equality and Law This includes organisations whose work creates and promotes effective equality-impactassessment in line with (the Equality Act of 2010) Welsh Governments duties on public bodies in Wales under the Equality Act, 2010. It also includes organisations involved in the promotion and enforcement of the law. 3. Drop In This category contains organisations that provide support to asylum seekers and refugees in an open space environment where they do not have to make an appointment to be seen. 4. Other Services This category includes organisations who offer a great variety of services and or support or their work is very specific that they may be the only organisation offering the service. The directory also contains organisations that have not registered their entry, but were added because of their contribution to the sector. In this case, all information was gathered from the public domain and do not contain personal information. The Sexual Exploitation Risk Assessment Framework is the only of its kind in Wales, and followed two years of research and campaign work by Barnardo’s commitment to highlight the level of need in Wales and the lack of support services. Some of our key services includes intensive support programmes, targeted awareness raising interventions and preventative work in schools.
