HDS system overview

Introduction • There are 3 networks in the HDS system: – Ethernet – high speed point-to-point – Multipoint connection requires use of NEP-1 type switch – NMEA2000 – medium speed bus – NMEA0183 – low speed point-to-point

• This presentation will explain how data is moved around

the HDS system and how the 3 networks interact.

What sonar data is shared over Ethernet?

Dual sonar system

Sonar Auto configuration • If I do an ‘Auto configure’ how does Sonar get setup? – HDS will choose digital depth source as: – Local sonar Xducer. If not available then… – HDS sonar Xducer. If not available then…. – A NMEA2000 depth transducer.

– HDS will choose water temp. source as: – NMEA2000 device. If not available then… – HDS Sonar transducer. If not available then… – Local sonar transducer. – HDS will choose water speed source as: – Local sonar Xducer. If not available then… – HDS sonar Xducer. If not available then…. – A NMEA2000 depth transducer.

• Auto Configure does not setup the scroll source. This is done manually via the Sonar menu. 7

Manual sonar source selection. • Sonar scroll data source is selected under the SONAR MENU as ‘this unit’ or another HDS on Ethernet. This a global setting.

– Digital Depth: From graph source in sonar page follows the scroll data source. – Temp will change with sonar source as long as it has not be configured to be used with a NMEA2k Temp.

• Temperature, depth and speed data source for data overlay is selected in the DATA SOURCES Menu. – If the source selected is SONAR then the source will be the same as that in the SONAR MENU and the data obtained from Ethernet. – If the source is not sonar then data will be obtained from NMEA2000.

NMEA0183 data flow • All supported NMEA0183 Receive sentences are bridged to NMEA2000. • All enabled NMEA0183 Transmit sentences can be sourced from:

– the local unit e.g. internal GPS – NMEA2000 – Ethernet (When SONAR is source)

11

Limited waypoint sharing

12

Limited waypoint sharing over NMEA2000 • With limited waypoint sharing over NMEA2000 you can: – Add a waypoint with name, icon, position and color to all other live HDS or LCX displays

• You CANNOT edit a waypoint on another display in any way. i.e. waypoint edits only effect your display.

13

Ethernet

Full waypoint sychronisation

14

Full waypoint sharing

cont.

• When waypoints are shared over Ethernet all changes are synchronized with all other displays on the network: – – – –

Add a waypoint with name, icon, position and color Edit all attributes Delete Move

• If I change a waypoint on one HDS display while the other is POWERED OFF, will the change be reflected on the other display next time both displays are POWERED ON? – YES. This will happen automatically.

15

Other data shared over Ethernet • A great new feature of HDS is that all data listed below shared over Ethernet is also automatically synchronized like waypoints. • Routes – Not shared over NMEA2000 – Ethernet must be connected • Alarms – Limits and on/off settings apply to all displays. – An alarm can be acknowledged or cleared from any display. – Alarm beeps can be turned on or off for each display. – A log of alarm events on the network is stored.

16

Other data shared over Ethernet Cont.

• System settings e.g. – Language – Units

• Data sources selection

– With global data source setting all displays can be pointed to the same data source. Global is the factory setting for all data sources. Saves setup time. – Individual data sources can also be made local. i.e. a display can be made to use a different data source to the other displays on the network.

17

Data not shared over any network • Trails

– These are stored locally on each display while you are underway. i.e. if a display is off the trail will not be stored on that display and will not be automatically transferred from another display when next powered on. – Can be transferred via SD card.

• Backlighting – Next release

• All non-system settings – E.g text size

Radar and Weather • Radar and Weather work over Ethernet • Multiple displays can display/control Radar and Weather at once. • The radar is a server i.e all radar settings are stored in the radar only. Likewise for LWX-1 weather. • There can only be 1 radar and/or 1 weather antenna on the system.

20

Going BIG! • You can have up to 3 HDS displays on an Ethernet network. • Can use more HDS units on the Ethernet network but speed may reduce depending Ethernet load (radar, weather, etc..) • You can have up to 50 devices/HDS displays on a NMEA2000 network.
