The digitalization of industry is a transformation that promises both great opportunities and great challenges. Keenly aware of this, many German companies are pushing ahead with their preparations, laying the groundwork today so that they are ready with new products for the new markets that will emerge. Against this background, the Global Business & Markets foreign trade platform at HANNOVER MESSE facilitates dialogue and exchange between SMEs from Germany and their counterparts from all around the world. It is a valuable and worthwhile initiative, and I would encourage you to build networks across industry and national borders so that you are ready to take advantage of the opportunities of the future.

Hannover can rightfully be called the “Davos Summit for Industry”. The Global Business & Markets foreign trade platform at HANNOVER MESSE has developed into one of the biggest events of its kind. The city of Hannover – capital of the German state of Lower Saxony – stands for openness and transparency. This is the place where small and medium-sized enterprises enjoy unique access to decision-makers from industry and government. HANNOVER MESSE – where we are appearing with our own stand – is one of the many places you can enter into a dialogue with our state. We cordially invite you to familiarize yourself with one of Europe’s most attractive locations for future-oriented industrial projects!

Willkommen/Welcome Dieter Kempf Präsident, Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e. V. (BDI)
Elżbieta Bieńkowska EU-Kommissarin für Binnenmarkt, Industrie, Unternehmertum und KMU
President, Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e. V. (BDI)
EU Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs
Industry is a key driver of economic modernization and employment. As the initiators of “Global Business & Markets”, Deutsche Messe and the Federation of German Industry (BDI) are committed to making it easier for small and medium-sized enterprises to gain access to the world’s growth markets, thus providing them with the widest possible scope of action. In the face of so many global challenges, this is and remains the key objective of our partnership – one which has attracted so many participating organizations and networks. We look forward to numerous joint initiatives for industrial growth and cooperation worldwide.

Industry is and remains one of the strongest engines driving European integration. This is nowhere more apparent than at HANNOVER MESSE – the platform where thousands of European enterprises successfully interconnect. Smart industrial supply chains and networks are a bulwark of the entire European economy, and a key factor in its global competitiveness. As the show’s Partner Country for 2017, Poland is dedicated to promoting this dynamic. The Global Business & Markets platform provides small and medium-sized enterprises with a window on international markets, offering them new and valuable cooperation opportunities. I look forward to the strong economic stimulus HANNOVER MESSE 2017 will generate for Europe.

Willkommen/Welcome Dr. Eric Schweitzer Präsident, Deutscher Industrie- und Handelskammertag e. V. (DIHK) President, Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) Das internationale Geschäftsumfeld ist in den letzten Monaten immer herausfordernder geworden. The international business environment has become more and more challenging in recent months. It is a development that is making itself felt by all enterprises, particularly those at the SME end of the spectrum. This is where the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHKs) can help. They support small and medium-sized German businesses in their search for new customers all around the world. This includes helping businesses to identify and effectively manage risks – particularly important when times are tough. HANNOVER MESSE is an opportunity for people in business to meet up, to get to know one another and share experiences. As the new patron of Global Business & Markets, it is our great pleasure at the DIHK to welcome you to this key foreign trade platform.

Impulse New Markets – New Opportunities: Environmental Technologies in East Africa Within Sahara-Africa the countries in Eastern Africa, especially Kenya and Tanzania, exhibit high levels of political stability and high economic growth rates. The growing middle class and a labor market with highly motivated young university graduates are the basis for this economic upturn. Market chances for German environmental technology industry exist in the realm of tightening requirements for energy efficiency and rising electricity costs for an industry, which aspires to produce on Western standards. Advancing industrialization and growing populations require the upgrading of existing, oftentimes ailing infrastructure in provision, disposal and treatment of generally scarce water resources. German technologies and expertise is widely appraised and as such has the potential to be marketed well in East African markets, especially if they are adapted to local conditions.

Opportunities for Industrial Automation in Poland As Germany’s neighbor in Central Europe, Poland is the most important trading partner for many German companies. Machinery and equipment make up more than a quarter of the trade volume. Due to rising wages and an increasing shortage of qualified personnel, Polish companies need to further modernize their manufacturing. In order to highlight the current economic climate and business opportunities in this year’s HANNOVER MESSE partner country, Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) invites you to a panel discussion entitled “Opportunities for Industrial Automation in Poland”. The focus of the discussion among representatives from administration and enterprise will center on practical aspects ranging from sales to production.

Halle/Hall 3, Stand G31, Business Forum 2 ASEAN in 2017: Taking new opportunities through trade policy Asian countries have been eager to further develop their network of trade agreements. Latest examples include the bilateral negotiations between the EU and various ASEAN member states as well the RCEP initiative by the ASEAN Community. With TPP, a new generation of trade agreements was in reach: creating new mechanisms that govern cross-border economic activities with much higher standards than any existing bilateral, regional and multilateral trade agreements. Now that the US has announced its withdrawal from TPP, the key question is: ■ What are possible paths for Asia’s trade policies? ■ Which role can regional bodies like the ASEAN play?

OBOR embraces 70 % of the world population, 55 % of world GDP and 75 % of the world’s energy reserves! The aim is to launch the maritime and land routes connecting the Asian continent with Europe. At the operational level, a financial vehicle – the AIIB – the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank was launched. For its communication with the EU, China created its own political platform CEEC 16 + 1 comprising of 11 EU member states and 5 Balkan states. This forum is now a driving force to expand and finance the Silk Road network into the EU. The connections between the new Silk Roads and the European TEN-T corridors will become a driving force for regional development.

Mexico – Diversification of the export markets Mexico, since quite some time, seeks to diversify its foreign trade relations. The election of Donald Trump as US-President and his protectionist announcement, especially with respect to Mexico, might drive the second biggest economy in Latin America to faster change their trade policy and possibly strengthen the economic ties between Germany and Mexico.
