introducing john mc kenna Described by The Wall Street Journal as “Ireland’s most authoritative food writer” John McKenna is the curator of the annual The 100 Best Restaurants in Ireland. He has been writing about Ireland’s food culture for twenty-five years and has won four Glenfiddich Awards, the André Simon Special Award and a Slow Food Ireland Media Award. A columnist for The Irish Times for over twenty years, John was born in Belfast, and lives in West Cork with his longtime collaborator and partner, Sally McKenna. McKenna owns every edition of The Penguin Guide to Jazz, which take up a metre of shelf space in his office, and he has enough Miles Davis cds and vinyl to cover most of the Sheep’s Head peninsula. He began his writing career with Hot Press magazine and – somehow – the magazine managed to survive.

welcome to galway jazz festival 2016 This year sees our most adventurous and comprehensive lineup to date, with contributions from renowned local, national and international artists, and we’re thrilled to be presenting four days packed with a variety of music ranging from Bach and John Cage through to Hip Hop and Electronica. We’re particularly happy to present the Andy Sheppard Trio teamed with Irish actor Jane Brennan performing the Shakespeare Songs, the mesmerising Christian Wallumrød Ensemble from Norway and the 2016 UK JazzFM Vocalist of the Year, Dubliner Lauren Kinsella, who will be travelling from England with her London based ensemble. This year’s festival has been supported by the Galway City Council Arts Office and has been made possible by the efforts of the local business community and the many individuals who have rowed in behind our various fundraising efforts. Huge thanks to you all! You might notice that many of our sponsors are from the food and hospitality sector. The connection between good food and drink, and jazz and improvised music runs deep. Both start with fantastic raw ingredients, require a high degree of skill and hard work to reach an acceptable level, but then the good is separated from the outstanding by the willingness to improvise, to take risks, to be driven by passion. Both our sponsors and our artists exemplify this. It’s no surprise then that when we were considering who might launch this year’s festival, on the top of the list was Ireland’s leading food writer, a passionate jazz fan and a former music journalist. We’re delighted to welcome John McKenna to Galway to officially open this years festival. I hope that you enjoy the programme on offer this year and I look forward to meeting you at one or more of the performances and sessions taking place throughout Galway.

A textbook example of the ongoing vitality of the mainstream jazz tradition, the Phil Ware Trio have set a new benchmark for the piano trio in Ireland. UK-born but based in Dublin for over a decade, Phil can he heard accomapnying some of the finest singers on both islands, but the magic really happens when he teams up with his long-time partners, bassist Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady, who together form one of the most creative and hardest-swinging rhythm sections on the Irish scene.

zinc

Combining hypnotic grooves with raw textures to bring the listener on a trip, Zinc’s music is under the wide umbrella of post-rock, but hip-hop and electronica also play a huge role in defining their sound. Composing through improvisation, their live shows are similarly informed, often improvising whole pieces at length. The band is Andrew Madec (bass), Simon Kenny (drums) and Aengus Hackett (guitar). Put these three ingredients together, and you get Zinc – exhilarating post-rock, with the melodic side of electronica and the roughness of hip-hop.

berrill/carpio/felton Clarinettist and GJF Artistic Director, Matthew Berrill is joined by two more of Ireland’s finest in a clarinet/piano/ drums trio that’s big on originality and huge on technical mastery. Seán Carpio is a multi-instrumentalist whose practice incorporates song, sound and improvisation. Described by the Irish Times as “maybe the finest drummer ever produced here”, Seán an active as a soloist in Europe and the USA, and to this date has featured on twenty recordings. Greg Felton is regarded as one of the best pianist/composers to emerge in Dublin in recent years. He holds a Masters in Composition from Waterford IT and a diploma in Jazz Performance from Newpark Music Centre, where he teaches composition, rhythm and improvisvation.

The work comprises an opening aria, and 30 short variations - or improvisations - that are linked via the bass line and chord progression. It’s a work that has been transcribed for almost every possible solo instrument and ensemble. It’s also a work that has captivated musicians for more than 250 years, and shows no sign of loosening its grip on the current or future generations of classical or jazz players. more info and latest news at gjf16.com

Aerie is a pan-European quintet lead by German saxophonist Ingo Hipp. He founded the band in 2013 and they have since played over 30 concerts around Europe. Although the instrumentation is that of a typical jazz quintet - saxophones, guitar, bass and drums - the group strive to avoid the clichés of modern jazz, always searching for a fresh take on forms and structures as well as instrumental functionality. It is lively in the aerie* so expect the unexpected: crazy flights, elegant sails, diligent hunting, always checking for limits. Aerie creates exciting modern jazz, connecting written material and improvisation with rock and jazz grooves. Live, Aerie continues to catch audiences by constantly varying the shape of their music. *nest of an eagle or large bird of prey Matthew Jacobson drums

shakespeare songs double bill with aerie / p9 shakespeare songs + aerie Saturday 8th October 8 pm / € 20 Mick Lally Theatre

A musical journey across Shakespeare’s world, this new Anglo-French project combines the talents of three leading contemporary jazz voices, weaving their magic around a series of musical portraits of characters from his plays and poems. Part improvised and part written, the music draws inspiration from Renaissance composers Thomas Morely and William Byrd, giving great importance to colour, melody, dynamics and, most of all, to space and silence. ‘The great English poet of the saxophone’, Andy Sheppard joins established French artists, drummer Christophe Marguet and pianist Guillaume de Chassy in their musical exploration of Shakespeare’s world. Texts for this performance will be read by Irish actor Jane Brennan. Jane has been acting for over 30 years and has worked extensively in theatre, film, television and radio. She received an Irish Times theatre award for her role in The Alice Trilogy by Tom Murphy at the Abbey and an IFTA for her role in the film Brooklyn. She recently recorded Jane Eyre for RTE radio and filmed NW for BBC2.

John Cage - Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano ‘Sonatas and Interludes’ is a collection of twenty short pieces for prepared piano, and is generally recognized as one of Cage’s finest achievements. A ‘prepared piano’ is one where the composer directs that various materials be placed between, over or around strings to alter their sound. In this case, Cage experimented with different materials and different notes until he was happy that he had transformed the piano into an instrument capable of communicating music that could ‘sober and quiet the mind, thus rendering it susceptible to divine influences’. The piano being prepared for this performance is a 6ft American Steinway, built in 1939, very close in age and size to the instrument Cage would have been working on when writing this music. Izumi Kimura is a Japanese born pianist resident in Ireland who, while having played with both RTE Orchestras and all of the leading Irish ensembles, has a very strong affinity with improvisation, and has championed new music throughout her career.

Brunch, cocktails and the classic jazz trio of grand piano, guitar and bass – what better way to gently re-boot the system on a Sunday? The Boylan/ Buckley/Evans trio has been described as playing ‘oh so sweet standards and soul infused originals for piano, guitar and bass respectively’. What started in 2008 as a way to kill time during a year spent on a Masters in Jazz Performance has blossomed into a satisfying swinging trio of the old school with a contemporary twist.

For many of us working in the arts, the most significant commemoration of 1916 was the occurrence of the ‘Waking The Feminist’ movement. Even the most devout of jazz followers might find it hard to name women musicians who aren’t singers or pianists. So how come more women don’t play the drums? (or bass, sax, guitar,vibes...) To discuss this we’ll be joined by five panellists who play key roles in the Irish jazz scene. more info and latest news at gjf16.com
