z

z

Product name and logo–We have introduced a new product name, logo and demonstration data that aligns the FRx product and FRx Software's ownership with one of the most recognizable brands in the industry- Microsoft Corporation. Through this association, existing customers and prospective buyers will know how we are evolving. While staying true to the trustworthy roots of our heritage, we are backed by the seasoned and insightful strength and vision shared by our parent company. And we will continue to reflect these ideals and live up to the standards set by our brand. FRx® Report Manager–Report Manager is a powerful optional module that makes it easy to pull together FRx reports with the other information end-users need to do their work, all delivered in one, comprehensive report book. It automates the time consuming and manual process of producing report books containing many different types of documents and files. Report Manager helps users present information in a manner that is logical, organized and relevant. Finally, Report Manager allows users to create report books with information specialized to the needs of each individual user, then streamlines the printing and distribution of the complete presentation. Report Manager allows:

z

Multiple output types including FRx® DrillDown Viewer™ files, Microsoft Office documents and other reports produced from diverse reporting packages to be packaged together for posting to a network or Web site, or for delivery via email or print. Recipients to view all documents contained in a report book using an enhanced version of the DrillDown Viewer software. Headers, footers and consecutive page numbering throughout the entire book.

z

Preface

Improved in FRx 6.7 Microsoft Excel graphing via FRx® instant!OLAP® software

instant!OLAP is now included in every edition, from FRx® Desktop through FRx® Enterprise. Additional functionality includes the ability for users to utilize the instant!OLAP software output format and export a report directly into a pivot table for automatic graphing in Excel. XBRL

Remaining at the forefront of advances in Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) technology, the support of the 1.0 taxonomy has been upgraded to the 2.0 standard. FRx Software understands the need for users to transfer complex, highly confidential corporate financial information to regulators, banks, investors and boards of directors using a trusted standard of financial communication. Because of this, we will continue to make advances in the XBRL compatibility of FRx, ensuring functional compliance as XBRL is further adopted by corporations and consumers of sensitive financial data. FRx® Currency Translation

The Currency Translation module has been enhanced to allow for greater flexibility in the calculation of translation rates. There are now two ways to calculate monthly average rates. Additionally, annual average rates can be calculated, thereby streamlining the maintenance necessary for Column Layouts when creating FRx reports. Users can now translate individual layers that represent transactions while comparing the total amount in the historical rates table to the appropriate general ledger total. This ensures that all transactions have been accounted for when converting data at the appropriate historic rates. Finally, we have addressed several software modification requests to improve the Currency Translation product module as a whole. FRx® WebPort

FRx® WebView has been consolidated into FRx WebPort to form a single product module that is available to all FRx users regardless of product edition or general ledger. Users can quickly publish Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel documents with their FRx reports for easy access by others on a secure Intranet site. Stability and Performance

Improvements to FRx 6.7 allow for faster report generation and quicker export of reports to the DrillDown Viewer and printing options. Additionally, FRx has been upgraded to support Microsoft Access 2002 and changes have been made to the database access technology. These enhancements ensure a more stable environment. In addition, improvements to the way the general ledger index (G32 file) is built will reduce the likelihood of database corruption.

8

Chapter 1: Pre-Installation Procedures Shared Directories

Shared Directories Depending on the type of installation that you select, you may need to create one or more shared directories before installing FRx. This section lists the required shared directories and discusses possible naming conventions for referencing these shared directories during the installation process.

Required Shared Directories If shared directories are required for your installation type, create these directories on the file server. The following table describes the required shared directories.

SysData The following table lists and describes the contents of the SysData directory. File Name/Extension

File Description

ActSys32.mdb

Accounting system database that tells FRx which systems it can access.

.TPL Files

Template files used to create new files and databases.

.F32 Files

Specification set database that contains rows, columns, trees, and catalogs created within FRx.

FRxDemo.F32

Specification set database that contains demonstration reports for the FW and FWC companies.

FRxRpts.F32

Default specification set demonstration database.

FRxSys32.mdb

FRx system database that contains system information for FRx.

.G32 Files

GL index files. One file is created by FRx for each company to store basic company information.

Table 1-2: Files in the SysData directory

The location of the SysData directory depends on the type of installation: z

When FRx is installed as a network installation (also known as a thin client), one SysData directory, located on the network, is used. This directory contains all of the files listed in Table 1-2.

z

When FRx is installed as a fat client with a shared network SysData directory, two SysData directories are used. The shared SysData directory on the network contains the FRxSys32.mdb, Matrix2.pmm, System.cfg, and all .F32 and .G32 files. The SysData directory on the local client is located under the FRx directory and contains

FRx 6.7 Installation and Configuration Guide

9

Chapter 1: Pre-Installation Procedures Shared Directories

the ActSys32.mdb, and all .TPL files. These files must be located in the appropriate SysData directory for FRx to function properly. It is possible for .F32 files to be contained in a different directory, outside of the SysData directory. Specification set locations can be configured within Report Designer. In this scenario, the SysData directory might not contain any .F32 files.

Note

Queue The Queue directory contains one file: FRxQue32.mdb. This file is the FRx database that holds queued and scheduled reports. By default, the SysData directory is also used as the Queue directory; however, you can specify a different location for the Queue directory during installation of FRx® Report Server.

Naming Conventions for Shared Directories At various points during the FRx installation, you are asked to specify a directory (for example, SysData) that may be shared across your network. You can specify a shared directory using one of the following methods: z

Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) The UNC method explicitly and completely specifies the computer name and hierarchy of directory names down to the file name. This is the recommended method for specifying directories. UNC names have the following general form: \\computer name\share name\directory name\file name

If you use this method of specifying a shared network computer, verify that a share name exists and that all users have full access rights to the specified directory. z

Drive Mapping With this method, you map a drive letter to point to a share name. You can then use the drive letter to refer to the share name. References to directories and files beneath that share name have the following general form: :\FRx 6.7\SysData If you use this method of specifying a shared network computer, verify that all workstations map the same drive letter to the specified directory and that all users have full access to the directory.

Wa rn i ng

You must use the same method (UNC or drive mapping) during all installations on the server and workstations.

Chapter 1: Pre-Installation Procedures User Name and Password for the Local Administrator of the Web

User Name and Password for the Local Administrator of the Web Server If you are installing WebPort on a Web server, and you are not the local administrator, you must obtain the user name and password for the local administrator account. You must be logged in as the administrator to install WebPort.

Chapter 2: Installation Procedures FRx Upgrades

FRx Upgrades Review this section if you are upgrading from a prior release of FRx. This section provides general information about FRx 6.7 and details about prior releases. The FRx 6.7 installation process attempts to detect an existing release of FRx (previously called FRx® Financial Reporter and FRx® Financial Reporting) on the computer. If a previous release is found, you have the option to automatically upgrade during the installation. When you select the upgrade option, the following files are automatically converted:

Caution

z

Specification set files (*.f32)

z

Company, security, and registration files (FRxSys32.mdb)

If you install FRx 6.7 into the same directory as the previous release, the existing data files are overwritten with the new formats and will no longer work with the previous release. Therefore, we recommend that you install FRx 6.7 into a separate directory from the previous release so that you can test the new release before uninstalling the prior release. The Install Assist utility helps with installation upgrades. See “Install Assist Utility” on page 75 for more information. After the installation is complete, go to Chapter 3, “Post-Installation Procedures” to verify that the upgrade was successful.

Wa rn i ng

Before upgrading to FRx 6.7: z z z

Turn off FRx Security in the previous release. Close all FRx programs. Back up the current SysData directory.

The following sections include specific information about upgrading and parallel testing with prior releases.

FRx Financial Reporter 6.5 To use both FRx 6.7 and FRx Financial Reporter release 6.5 for parallel testing or validation on the same computer, you must have release 6.5 installed with the latest service pack. If you do not have this service pack installed, you can download it from the FRx Web site into the existing 6.5 installation directory.

Chapter 2: Installation Procedures Installation Overview

Installation Overview The configuration of FRx is highly customizable for your environment. This guide provides instructions for the most common configurations. You can apply these instructions to any variations in your FRx setup. You can install the FRx client programs on a workstation for each individual user (fat client), or you can install FRx to a network directory and then share it among multiple users (thin client). A fat-client installation is typically used if you have a single-user license or if you want to minimize dependency on the network. The networked, thin-client installation is the most common configuration in a multi-user environment because it minimizes the amount of hard disk space that is used on the client workstations and makes maintenance and upgrades easier to perform. In most cases, we recommend a thin-client installation. The Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 is installed with the FRx® Report Manager component and any components that are dependent on Report Manager. Thus, the following components include the Microsoft .NET Framework:

Note

z

Report Manager Report Server

z

FRx® DrillDown Viewer™

z

FRx® Report Designer (unless you specifically avoid installing Report Manager)

z

The FRx Installation Browser dialog box appears automatically whenever you insert the FRx installation compact disc into a CD-ROM drive. The following sections briefly describe the options that are available on the FRx Installation Browser dialog box. Before you begin installing FRx, review this information so that you fully understand these options and how the installation process operates.

Chapter 2: Installation Procedures Installation Overview

Install FRx Clicking the Install FRx button starts the InstallShield Wizard that you can use to install the FRx product components. The FRx installation options include the following: z

Local Client

In a local client installation (or fat-client installation), FRx is installed as a fat client on each client workstation with the most common components: Report Designer, DrillDown Viewer, FRx® Report Launcher, and Report Manager. In this installation configuration, you can choose to store and maintain the SysData directory (the directory that stores FRx company information, report specifications, and supporting files) either on each client workstation or on a shared network computer. The location of the SysData directory depends on whether you want multiple users to share reports and company information. We recommend that you create the SysData directory on a shared network computer. For installation instructions, see “Installing FRx on a Fat-Client Workstation” on page 22.

Note

If you perform a fat-client installation and do not set up the SysData directory on a shared network computer, you cannot use Report Server or Report Launcher. z

Network Client

In a network client installation (or a thin-client installation), you set up each client workstation as a thin client and install the minimum required components only. Before you perform a thin-client installation on a client workstation, you must have already installed the FRx programs on a file server. In a network server installation, FRx is installed on the file server with the most common components: Report Designer, DrillDown Viewer, Report Launcher, and Report Manager. For network server installation instructions, see “Installing FRx Programs on a Server for Network Access” on page 28. For thin client installation instructions, see “Installing FRx on a Thin-Client Workstation” on page 34.
