Fredericksburg Jazz Collective Jazz Jam Etiquette The Jam Session is a very old Jazz Tradition that serves many important functions within the Jazz Music Community. The Jam Session has long been a format for professionals, aspiring players and listeners to come together and experience the creation and expression of this amazing art form. It is a platform that allows the novice player a chance to listen, learn and interact with professional musicians. In addition, the aspiring musician is given the opportunity to apply their knowledge and learn how to communicate it musically before a live audience. The Jam Session also allows new musicians in the area to network and demonstrate what they have to offer. All developing players need a place where they can go to apply their craft or “Chops”. The Jam Session provides that proving ground for them to build their confidence, improve their skills, learn the repertoire and play in front of a live audience. It is this reason that the Jam Session has played a vital role as an apprenticeship for an individuals musical development as a jazz musician.

Jam Session Expectations • Know the repertoire. Listen, play along and learn the tunes before you sign up

to play. ( See song list below) • Be courteous to others. Do not bring your instrument out of the case until you • • •

• • •

have been asked to sit in. Be quiet on stage! No “noodling” between tunes. Come and check out the scene and listen to the performances. Sign up to play and be ready to play what is called. “If you don’t KNOW the tune, don’t PLAY the tune.” If you sing, play the horn, guitar, bass, keyboard or the drums, you should be ready to play the melody!! Be respectful of the bassist and drummer. Remember they are the driving support under the soloists and they need periodic breaks. Limit your solos. If you run out of ideas, hand the solo to the next person. A house PA is provided, including a bass amp, guitar amp and depending on the house band, a keyboard.
