Brazil / 2014 / 90 min. Directed by Daniel Aragão

Genre: Thriller Portuguese w/ English Subtitles

After an extended stint at a rehabilitation center, Joli Dornelles, a recovering crack addict and the daughter of Recife mayoral candidate Antonio, returns home.

LITTLE BOOK OF LOVE 2 / PEQUENO DICIONÁRIO AMOROSO 2

Brazil / 2015 / 90 min. Directed by Sandra Werneck, Mauro Farias

Sandra Werneck revisits the characters and alphabetically arranged scenes of her box-office smash “Little Book of Love” (1996) in this stand-alone film. Luiza is now married to Alex with whom she had a son; her romantic interest in that first film, Gabriel, is now going out with the much younger Jacqueline. Their old romance is rekindled when they unexpectedly run into each other at a friend’s funeral. Meanwhile, Alice, Gabriel’s daughter from his first marriage, becomes entangled in a rather complicated ménage à trois.

Isaac Ezban follows up his unnervingly original debut “The Incident” (shown at our Festival last year) with this equally trippy homage to the paranoid sciencefiction films of the 1950s and 60s. On the rainy night of October 2, 1968, after hundreds of students were massacred by government forces in what became known as the Tlatelolco Massacre, eight characters wait inside an isolated station for the next bus to take them to Mexico City. Suddenly, each character undergoes a slow, unexpected, and mysterious genetic mutation.

Genre: Documentary Spanish w/ English Subtitles

On December 20, 1989, U.S. forces invaded Panama with one goal in mind: to depose then-president (and former U.S. ally) Manuel Noriega. Most Panamanians have opted to forget this dark and bloody chapter of their recent history even though the invasion left thousands of civilian and military casualties. Through reenactments and first-person accounts, Abner Benaim’s powerful documentary explores the role collective memory plays in shaping history, especially when that history is deliberately swept under the rug.

Uruguay / 2015 / 77 min. Directed by Mario Handler

Genre: Documentary / LGBTQ Spanish w/ English Subtitles

Veteran Uruguayan documentarian Mario Handler’s latest film explores the diversity of his country’s working class, the concept of work and all that it entails. His camera roams the streets, warehouses and factories of Montevideo and Uruguay’s mines and farms, following these workers from the moment they board the bus or train on their way to work to the moment they clock out for the day. He also captures their extracurricular activities as they organize for a strike, relax at home, participate in a candombé ritual or, in one case, marry their same-sex partner. Handler creates a vivid, rich mosaic of a complex, dynamic world.
