WELCOME NOTE GEORGINA WESTGARTH , EVENT MANAGER Triathlon WA The finish line is in sight! You’ve done the training, the anticipation is building and race day is finally here. You should feel immensely proud to be part of the 15th SunSmart Busselton Festival of Triathlon. It’s a hive of activity with the Funky Trunks Open Water Swim, SunSmart Kids Triathlon and Mizuno Fun Run, the Health & Lifestyle Expo culminating with the crescendo of IRONMAN 70.3 and we’re excited to host you. To our individual athletes, professional athletes and teams you’ve done the hard part preparing, so have fun competing then celebrate your achievements at the after party celebrations on Sunday. We take your safety seriously so please adhere to the rules and take direction from the technical officials, event crew and volunteers who are there to help you reach your goal and receive that medal. Special thanks goes to our cheerful army of volunteers who are the backbone of this event. Without them the festival would not be possible. To our naming rights sponsors SunSmart and Healthway, our major partners Tourism WA, City of Busselton, Department of Sport & Recreation, Royalties for Regions and Department of Regional Development and all other sponsors, TriEvents team, Triathlon WA, stakeholders and supporters, thank you. On behalf of Muscular Dystrophy WA our charity partner, I would like to thank all of our athletes who are competing to raise awareness and funds for this fantastic cause. To everyone involved, please give generously in the donation tins provided. Enjoy being part of the 2016 SunSmart Busselton Festival of Triathlon. On your marks, get set, go!

DAVE BUDGE, RACE DIRECTOR TRIEVENTS To those participants taking part in the SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton for the very first time, welcome to our wonderful event and thank you for choosing the charming location of Busselton for your sporting challenge. For the athletes returning to take on ‘Busso’ again, whether it’s your second time or your fifteenth - you know what you’re in for and we wish you the best in achieving your goals for the race; we’ll be with you all the way. Last year’s race was tinged with sadness after the tragic passing of one of the competitors during the event. Our thoughts will be with the Powell family and friends during this year’s event. This heartbreaking tragedy serves as a reminder to us all to make the most of every occasion and to keep perspective about why we participate in the wonderful sport of triathlon. My message to you all is to challenge yourself, appreciate the moment, engage with everyone around you and feed off the positive atmosphere. Accept that some races go well and occasionally some not so well; regardless of the outcome just enjoy yourself - that’s what sport is all about. Most importantly be thankful to those who have helped you on your journey to arrive at the finish line. Your friends, family, training buddies - a lot of sacrifices have been made, a lot of kilometres have been swum, ridden and run - they’ve shared and supported your physical and emotional journey to get here. Show those special people the appreciation they deserve for their support in assisting you in achieving your goal. Have fun, enjoy the day, and keep on inspiring others. See you at the finish line. Good luck everyone.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RACE REFEREE On behalf of Triathlon Australia, welcome to all athletes in the SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton event. The event will be conducted under the Triathlon Australia (TA) Race Competition Rules. Failure to abide by these rules may result in you receiving a penalty. For a full version of the Triathlon Australia Race Competition Rules go here. During the bike leg, drafting, blocking, illegal pass and helmet infringements incur a 5-minute time penalty, to be served at the next Penalty Box you come to. You will be shown a BLUE card by a technical official if you incur one of these infringements. Failure to stop at the next Penalty Box will result in disqualification. Littering outside of the litter zones provided, will result in disqualification (DQ). Key rules to be aware of are; To avoid a blocking infringement always ride to the left of the road To avoid a drafting infringement always; 1. Keep 12 metres between yourself and the cyclist in front of you. 2. Once you enter the draft zone complete your pass. 3. Complete your pass within 25 seconds. 4. Drop back 12 metres once passed before attempting to re-pass. 5. When passing a number of cyclists, do not “drop in” between cyclists unless the distance is greater than 12 metres. • To avoid an illegal pass infringement always pass other athletes on the right. • To avoid a helmet infringement always have your chin strap securely fastened when moving with your bike. • To avoid a littering infringement only discard litter at zones shown at the aid stations. IF YOU LITTER OUTSIDE OF THESE ZONES you will be disqualified. • •

Other common rule infringements are: • Unauthorised equipment – absolutely no mobile phones, MP3 players, Oakley Thumps, ipods or other audio listening or communication devices, this includes mobile phones used for navigation purposes. • Outside assistance – do not accept any assistance from anyone other than race personnel and do not have non-racers ride or run alongside you. Triathlon is an individual event and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid Infringements. A Technical Official’s ruling is final in the case of drafting, blocking and illegal pass Infringements (Judgment Calls) and these are not subject to either protest or appeal. There is no Penalty Box on the run course so if you receive an infringement on the run leg, you will serve your penalty on the spot with a Technical Official. Conducting personal toilet stops other than at the on-course toilet facilities provided may result in a DQ. Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers, officials and spectators with courtesy and consideration as failure to do so is considered unsportsmanlike conduct and may result in a DQ. I sincerely hope you have a great race and achieve your goals at SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton

SWIM COURSE: 1.9kms CUT OFF TIME ON SWIM COURSE: • •

INDIVIDUALS: 1 HOUR 10MIN TEAMS: 1 HOUR

There will be wave starts in the swim to reduce congestion amongst swimmers and to minimise congestion on the bike course. All participants will be asked to know their start wave and time and make their way to the swim start compound on the beach. It is a one-lap swim course alongside the historic Busselton Jetty. The swim starts on the beach on the east side of Busselton Jetty. The swim heads out to sea for 850m, followed by a right hand turn – swimming away from the jetty. A short straight at the top of the course followed by another right hand turn and head back to shore to the swim exit then into transition.

SWIM START Those wanting to warm up for the swim are requested to do so on the eastern (right hand side) of the swim start. Each wave will be invited into the start area before their wave start. Competitors should only enter the start area via the back of the fenced area and ensure they cross the timing mats – this is to ensure all swimmers are accounted for and so we ensure everyone has started in the correct wave.
