Heroes Out in Force for Night of the Stars Considering the mammoth effort required to hold a major fundraiser on the heels of moving into a new facility and the many challenges posed by the current economic climate, the theme of “Horses and Heroes” for the sixth annual NIGHT OF THE STARS on June 20 at the Keeneland Entertainment Center could not have been more perfect. With approximately 500 people in attendance, NIGHT OF THE STARS raised more than $119,000, the third-highest amount in the history of the event. “We are so gratified that this event maintained its popularity with the generous support of our community. The funds raised are instrumental to the continued growth and success of our program,” said CKRH Executive Director Pat Kline. NIGHT OF THE STARS began with a silent auction of several hundred tempting items, ranging from the weekend use of a Porsche to engraved halters worn by famous Thoroughbreds. Guests enjoyed a buffet dinner, music by the Miles Osland Band and an appearance by speaker Rebecca Tangle Hart, a successful para-equestrian who attends Penn State University. During this year’s Rolex Kentucky ThreeDay Event, Tangle Hart visited CKRH and rode in the new arena. She told guests at NIGHT OF THE STARS that CKRH is “one of the best therapeutic riding facilities I have seen.” After dinner, master of ceremonies Dan Kenny and auctioneer Walt Robertson began the live auction with a group of five items. price of $4,200 was a condo stay at Los Suenos Resort and Marina in Costa Rica donated by Hayley Sumner and purchased by William Baker. Other live auction offerings were the use of a Keeneland Sky Box during the fall race meet, donated by Darley; a custom oil portrait and framing of a child by artist Jill Rudzik, donated by Rudzik and Gallery B; an original oil painting titled “Crimson Field,” donated by artist Patrick Adams; and a South Sea pearl pendant on an 18-inch multicolor sapphire necklace, donated by a Friend of CKRH. As always, the highlight of the evening was the appearance of the the CKRH students and horses wearing elaborate costumes created

by Shirley Gentry. Eight lots – Three Musketeers, Elvis, Indiana Jones, Jacques Cousteau, a firefighter, University of Kentucky sports fans, Special Olympics/para-equestrian competitor, and Superman and Wonder Woman – were paraded for auction with the winning bidder for each horse and rider gaining a year’s sponsorship of the horse, along with a commemorative photo and plaque. Selling for the top price of $8,000 was Zippo and her rider, Leah, who showed off their Big Blue spirit as University of Kentucky sports fans. Consigned by Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Foundation, the team was accompanied by enthusiastic support from the audience. The Continued On Page 8

2009 Harvest Trail Ride and Tack Sale By Judy Donahoe and Laura Whayne

Saturday, October 31, 2009 is the date set for this year’s Trail Ride and Tack Sale. We can already feel the excitement in the air as donations of Tack and Equipment arrive at CKRH and plans are made for setting the trail. Horse enthusiasts from near and far will gather to shop for bargains and to ride their horses, all to benefit Central Kentucky Riding for Hope. Last year this event was held on Saturday, November 1st. It was a beautiful, crisp and sunny fall day. The Tack Sale was held in the new CKRH facility. This was an exciting opportunity to show it off. Though it is not finished yet, one can clearly see what a great facility it will be so classes can be offered year round. The 2008 event had the largest inventory of saddles ever for the tack sale. We also had a wonderful selection of blankets, which is always a crowd pleaser. Bargains galore were found by all. As always, the success of our tack sale depends totally upon the generosity of donations from the horse owners and lovers from the area. Remember, it is never too early to clean out your tack and send donations for next year’s sale! The Trail Ride meandered through the Kentucky Horse Park and the neighboring Barton Brothers’ farm. We had a total of 217 riders in 2008, which is a record number. Everyone had a fun and safe ride. Following the trail ride, riders of all ages and their horses could compete in costume classes. The creativity with the costumes is amazing! Check out the CKRH website for pictures of the costumes, the tack sale, and the trail ride (http://www.ckrh.org). An event of this magnitude could not happen without the support of

sponsors and volunteers. Our sponsors for 2008 were Siena Farm, Bluegrass Tire, Trackside Farm, Anggelis & Gordon PLLC, BET Labs, Biederman Real Estate & Auctioneers, C. David Beck, Chet Blackey DVM, Congleton Freezer Beef, Horse Cents, Lantern Hill Farm, Lockness Farm, and Nicoma Bloodstock. The volunteers involved are too numerous to name, but please know that all your time and effort given in support of CKRH before, during, and after this event are much appreciated. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! – TO ALL OUR SPONSORS AND VOLUNTEERS. The total amount raised with sponsorships, the tack sale, trail ride and ride-athon was close to $25,000 in 2008! This is FANTASTIC! If you were a donor of tack, a sponsor, a volunteer, a rider, or a shopper – thank you for supporting CKRH and making this event so successful. Keep spreading the word about CKRH and the Harvest Trail Ride and Tack Sale. We hope to see you and your friends this year on Saturday, October 31, 2009!

CONGRATULATIONS!! PONY CLUB In October 2008 we had 2 Pony Club members complete three Achievement Badges. Sierra Pollard earned her Mount/ Dismount Badge, while Kaitlyn Kyle earned both the Balanced Seat/Good Hands Badge as well as the Walk Badge. In 2009 the Grooming Badge and Horse Parts Badge were completed by Tahreem Ali, Creighton Noal, Marilee Pollock and Emily Sorrell. We are very proud of them and all their hard work.

Spring Means The Paul Frazer Memorial The folks in Pennsylvania rely on a groundhog to tell them spring is on the way, but around here folks know spring is on the way when it is opening day of the Paul Frazer Memorial. Mark your calendars now for March 27, 2009! The Paul Frazer Memorial Combined Tests and Dressage is the longest running fundraiser for CKRH, Inc. The competition which is made up of two equine disciplines, the Combined test where horses are scored on flat work (Dressage) and jumping and the Dressage test where horses are scored on specific movements within a test. Dressage Tests took place in the Dressage Complex at the Kentucky Horse Park, while the jumping portion of the Combined Test was held in the Rena Murphy Ring. In the past twenty years, the Paul Frazer has served a dual purpose; the profits from the competition are used by CKRH, Inc to assist in providing riding sessions for clients and the show itself provides the first competition of the year for area riders. The event held in 2008 was very successful thanks to the wonderful organizing skills of Carmen Radar Bowles and Shelly Stanley. Their efforts resulted in strong participation numbers and despite the challenging economic times, a financially successful event. Why not drop by and celebrate the “first” day of spring with the many volunteers and riders at this year’s competition? Or if braving the infamous Paul Frazer weather, which has been very unpredictable at times, is not possible, you might want to consider supporting the competition by sponsoring a class. Sponsorship information may be obtained by contacting the show secretary, Carmen Rader-Bowles at [email protected] or by phone at 859.338.3094.

Healing Hooves Program Continues Hospice of the Bluegrass and Central Kentucky Riding for Hope continued their collaboration in the Healing Hooves program this summer. This program incorporates the use of horses to help facilitate the grieving process for Kentucky children and teenagers who have experienced the death of a loved one. Hospice Bereavement Counselors, NARHA Certified Instructors, trained volunteers and horse combine to assist children with the healing process and help promote healthy copying skills. Retreat participants work on strategies to express their grief, reduce stress and isolation and connect with others who have lost a loved one. This year’s retreat, held at CKRH’s new facility was a positive experience for all those in attendance. A screening and application process is required prior to participation. The program is open to any Kentucky child or teenager who has experienced the death of a loved one. If you’d like to learn more about this program call Brandy Gordon LCSW at Hospice. (859) 277-2700

MISSION STATEMENT Central Kentucky Riding for the Hope is dedicated to enriching the community by improving the quality of life and the health of children and adults with special physical, cognitive, emotional and social needs through therapeutic activities using the horse.

Special Olympics Preparations Underway Enthusiastic preparations are underway for Special Olympics 2009 which will happen on Sunday, October 4th. Participants and horses are attending practices, riding apparel is being coordinated and excitement is running high. Every year CKRH staff and volunteers are inspired by the many accomplishments of the Special Olympic participants. Wonderful stories like these from last year’s event will be told repeatedly throughout the year. Drew Norby, a participant of CKRH for 8 years, was riding LeSabre independently in a walk only Equitation Class. Chaos was apparent at the beginning of the class; horses were too close together, and people were uncertain of what direction they should be going. It was in this unpredictable environment that Drew demonstrated his abilities as an equestrian and became a gold medal winner. We all watched as he problem solved his way out of what could have been an unsafe situation. He maneuvered his horse out of a tight corner and around other horses to create space between himself and the other riders. He and his horse Kristin Pfahl, Drew Norby, Marilee Pollock, walked proudly along the rail, just as he had practiced in lessons. LeTonna Wilson The next challenge occurred when the judge incorrectly tottered back and forth, the crowd gasped. Kelly never called for all riders to trot. The Move Accomplished; A Milestone Achieved Central Kentucky Riding for Hope moved early this spring into their new therapeutic riding center located within The Kentucky Horse Park. Although the education portion of the facility is still in the fundraising phase, the use of the barn and the arena made it possible for CKRH to accomplish one of its main goals, which is to provide services year-round. We are all excited that sessions don’t have to be cancelled when it’s raining! Our staff, clients, instructors, volunteers, therapists and horses have all transitioned well and appreciate daily the wonderful new facility we now call home. CKRH is grateful to the many generous donors, dedicated volunteers and committed staff who have helped make this move possible. We remain optimistic that fundraising for the therapy/education center will continue to progress. Here’s what’s been happening since the move: • CKRH inaugurated services in late May after an exhaustive two months of re-orientating 300+ volunteers/ instructors to new safety standards in the facility. WTVQ36 weatherman Jon James helped kickoff this landmark riding session by broadcasting a daily weather forecast from the indoor arena. • Over the summer, CKRH organized several camps and retreats with collaborative partners Hospice of the Bluegrass, LFUCG Parks & Recreation and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in addition to ongoing twice-weekly hippotherapy sessions with Cardinal Hill Rehabilitative Hospital. Given the constant rainy weather this summer, our gratitude for the indoor arena grew by leaps and bounds…how wonderful not to cancel any of these sessions due to inclement weather! • In early July, CKRH hosted the National American Hippotherapy Association’s Level I treatment principles for therapists, a four-day licensing seminar for 22 participants from across the US; • The fall Therapeutic Riding session (on full schedule) began August 17 and continues through the end of October

competitors. For Ken the different textures of fabric and the change in routine can be very stressful. On this day everything was different for Ken: the clothes, the sounds, the location and the way he got on his horse. Everyone who knew Ken watched with pride as he rode his horse, Ingrid, for over an hour in this strange environment. GO KEN, we are proud of you! “Why horses?” people ask. It was through their work with horses that these riders learned to problem solve, think independently, remain calm and develop confidence, perseverance and pride.

when CKRH will host its annual Tack Sale & Trail Ride (October 31.) • CKRH achieves another milestone November 6-8 with our first on-site North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) instructor certification series. This host opportunity is not only significant to CKRH, but now offers the entire state of Kentucky an accessible resource for licensing/continuing education requirements. Previously, candidates or centers who wanted to become certified in various Therapeutic Riding services had to travel to Tennessee or other states for that purpose.

Winston’s Gift CKRH has been offered an exciting opportunity to benefit from the publishing of Winston’s Gift, a wonderful, heartwarming story starring a therapeutic riding pony. The anticipated revenue will not only help to finish our new facility but will get the “message” out, highlighting the benefits of therapeutic riding programs everywhere. You can be part of this special event. We are offering a dedication section devoted to “Stars” of our program and in honor of special ponies and horses that have left hoof beats on our heart. If you’d like to make a dedication to a person and enable them to see their name in print as part of this special pony tale, there are several choices offered: The “Walk” page for donations of $25; the “Trot” page for donations of $50; the “Canter” page for donations of $100; the “Gallop” page for donations of $500 or more. If you want to give a special tribute to a pony or horse why not list them in “The Special Horse and Pony Section”: “Blue Ribbon Winner” for donations of $25; the “Reserve Champion” for $50; the “Champion” page for $100, and the “Grand Champion” page for $500 or more. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of author, Esther Fretz and artist, Jennifer Stanley for crafting Winston’s Gift and their generosity and willingness to help CKRH. All proceeds from the dedication opportunities will contribute to publishing costs. For additional information please call Pat Kline at CKRH (859) 231-7066.

Volunteer Crew Builds and Paints Sheds Our dedicated volunteers have stepped up to the plate again! They braved the winter weather and completed construction of four run in sheds at the new facility. Fighting the rain and mud to the snow and bitter cold, the volunteer crew has taken time out of their busy lives to help CKRH get one step closer to making our horses feel at home. Thanks to all those volunteers who answered the call to help! A special thank you to Dave Schneider and Neil Tollner, who took on the duties of organizing and directing this project. Once the sheds were constructed; another awesome volunteer effort followed to paint the sheds with sealer to protect them from rain and the snow this winter. Our deepest thanks to Doug Wilson for his advice and supervision of this project and all the volunteers who assisted him. I’m sure all the CKRH horses are looking forward to living the good life at their new home!

New four-bay shed at CKRH is a shining example of the dedication of CKRH’s talented volunteers.

Long-term Goals Being Achieved For many years CKRH has aspired to educate instructors and therapists in the field of equine assisted activities right here at home. With the addition of an indoor arena and a meeting room that goal has become a reality. To insure the highest quality services possible, CKRH is dedicated to maintaining professional certifications for our center, instructors and therapists. Until 2009 CKRH instructors and therapists had to travel to a different state to complete the certification process through NARHA (formerly known as North American Riding for the Handicapped) and AHA (American Hippotherapy Association). This year CKRH is offering these certifications right here at home. Our goal is not only to train and educate staff and volunteers at CKRH but also to provide a place for Kentuckians and others from all around the country to receive high quality continuing education.

American Hippotherapy Association Level 1 Treatment Principles for Therapists training session was held in the CKRH barn. Educational session such as this have expanded since the move to the new facility.

Meet Our CKRH Staff Amanda Zozgornik Equine Manager Amanda joined CKRH in March 2008. She first became involved with therapeutic riding by volunteering at the Forget-Me-Not Foundation near her hometown in northern Minnesota. She served as a board member, instructor, leader, side walker, and back rider. She also cared for and exercised the horses while supervising others who did the same. Since then, she has worked or volunteered at a few different animal shelters, rescues and horse farms, including Woodford Humane Society

Executive Director Pat Kline receives grant award from John S. Shropshire ofThe Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. The award of $10,700 will help CKRH fund site work and mounting blocks to aide in the development of our outside riding ring.

Special Olympic Team Latonna Wilson, Dallas Cason, Doug Wilson, Beth McCallister and Messenger.

Special Olympic Team members Emma Bukowski, Jenny Jackson, Tamara Ralf, Rocket Boy, Whitney Allen and Ann Bukowski.

TCA Grant Thoroughbred Charities of America awarded CKRH a grant for $25,000 last July. This gift means so much to our program; it is instrumental in helping us meet the challenges of transitioning into a larger facility with growing programming during these economic times. Central Kentucky Riding for Hope is deeply appreciative of this award and is proud to have been recognized by TCA. The accomplishments of TCA continue to touch the lives of many horses and the people associated with them; CKRH values the support and continued dedication of this wonderful organization.

CKRH Pony, Cracker Jack, enjoyed a day of participating in the collaboration between Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and CKRH. Enthusiastic patients from Shriner’s engaged in equine activities designed for those with spina bifida.

Horse Profile

Zippo: Calm and Gentle Demeanor Royal Zippo is a 23 year old registered American Quarter Horse mare. She is a beautiful chestnut and just the right size for therapeutic riding. Zippo’s life before CKRH included a career as a reining horse and a spotlight in the Kentucky Horse Park’s Parade of Breeds. She joined our team in October 2003, and is owned by CKRH. Zippo’s kind and gentle demeanor has earned her a special place in all of our hearts. Her calm attitude is especially valuable in therapeutic riding lessons involving small, timid riders. She loves her job and is very willing to do anything that is asked of her. These qualities make her a regular at the “NIGHT OF THE STARS.” Zippo gets chilly and requires a little extra TLC during the winter. She wants her dedicated volunteers to know that she really appreciates the comfortable stall and her warm blanket! This issue of Hoof Notes includes information normally covered in our Winter edition. However , due to the move to our new facilities, we were unable to publish our Winter 2009 issue. We will return to two issues annually with Winter 2010.
