Music, Book and Lyrics by Elton John & Tim Rice
Additional Music and Lyrics by Lebo M., Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin & Hans Zimmer
Book By Roger Allers & Irene Mecchi Based on the Broadway Production Directed By Julie Taymor WHAT IS THE SHOW ABOUT?
The story of “The Lion King” is as simple- and as powerful – as a folk tale: a young prince loses and then reclaims his kingdom after learning from his mistakes and regaining his sense of self. “The Lion King” took the world by storm as a ground-breaking animated film in 1994. To bring Simba’s tale to life on the Broadway stage, Disney Theatrical Productions gathered a team of artistic visionaries to blend Broadway-style songs, African rhythms and voices, extraordinary dances and theatrical techniques from around the world. Most stunningly, this brilliant and lifeaffirming musical about the animal kingdom remains a very human story through the use of evocative masks, breathtaking costumes that merge the human figure with animal physicality, and larger-than-life puppets that reveal the human performers underneath. Keith Valley Music Theatre is proud to follow in their tradition. Experience the stunning artistry, unforgettable music and thrilling choreography of this aweinspiring musical. The “Circle of Life” awaits.

THE AUDITION PROCESS: What are we looking for? • • •
•
• • •
Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before - experience is not required. PUNCTUALITY: Arrive at a half hour before call time and sign-in to get your number on the front of the stage. Pin your number on your shirt. PREPAREDNESS / FOLLOW DIRECTIONS: Please arrive for your appointment with your audition sheet completed, a conflict calendar (signed by both you and your parent/guardian) and picture attached (you will not be getting this photo back, so you may use a photocopied/printed picture) -- and for the dance audition wearing something you can dance in (not high heels and a skirt for girls). DICTION: You will be asked to state your name, grade, and maybe a short question. This is to get a quick glimpse at your professionalism, stage presence, poise, personality, projection, and enunciation. One at a time you will perform your musical selection. Scales section: We want to see how high you can sing and how low to make sure you have the range for the roles we are casting. Pitch Matching section: Three notes are played and you sing them back. Easy.
• •
REMEMBER your audition begins FROM THE MOMENT YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOOR. High marks go to “stage presence” so do not stare down at the floor. Always
look up and out over the audience. Don’t be nervous…and SMILE! We’re all friendly, so we promise that it won’t be intimidating.
NOTE: AUDI TI ONS AR E CLOSED TO VI SI TOR S REHEARSALS Blocking, Music and Dance rehearsals will be held Monday- Thursdays from 6:30-9:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:00- 12:00pm LUNCH BREAK 1:00pm-5:00 p.m. PLEASE NOTE: Not everyone will be required to meet at all of these rehearsals. You will be given a specific schedule, which will have significantly fewer rehearsals than conflict calendar - up until the week before the show.
SHOW DATES
THE LION KING, JR. will be performed Thursday and Friday evening December 8th & 9th at 7:30pm with two added matinees on Saturday and Sunday December 10th & 11th at 1:30pm. WE NOW HAVE A TOTAL OF FOUR PERFORMANCES! IF YOU CANNOT BE PRESENT AT ALL PERFORMANCES DO NOT AUDITION. NOW FOR THE RULES If you cannot follow them, please re-consider auditioning: ABSENTEE POLICY: MANDATORY Cast/Parent meeting will be held Monday September 26th. First rehearsal will be tentatively be held on Tuesday, September 27th with a read-through of the script. All rehearsals will be held Monday – Thursday evenings and will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. Saturday rehearsals begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 4:00 with an hour break for lunch. YOU MAY NOT STAY AT THE BUILDING DURING LUNCH. A STAFF MEMBER WILL NOT BE PRESENT AT THIS TIME. If you are late to more than 3 rehearsals that you are called for, than that will count as 1 absence. If you are absent (regardless of the reason) when we initially block a scene, teach a dance number or initially learn vocal music – we cannot guarantee that you will be in that portion of the show. As we learned from past experience it is TOO difficult to re-teach learned material for people who repeatedly missed rehearsals to working them in. If you miss 2 UNEXCUSED rehearsals you will be dropped from a production number. If you get a 3rd UNEXCUSED absence you will be dropped from the cast. Please keep in mind that you must be available for all run-throughs beginning Monday November 26th. No conflicts accepted after THIS DATE.
OBLIGATIONS (In addition to the requirements above): • Ad sales – each student is required to raise at least $100.00 in ad sales. There are • • •
•
•
only two revenue streams for producing the musical, ticket sales and fund raisers. All cast needs to help raise money to put on the show. Activity Fee - Each cast & crew member will be responsible for $30 to help pay for the cast party, Kisses for the Cast, T-Shirt, Staff Gift and Concession. This will help alleviate last minute costs during Showtime. Poster DISTRIBUTION – each student is required to distribute posters to businesses within the area. Costume pieces - Sometimes we ask that you provide costume items - such as shoes, socks, pants, etc - appropriate for your character - this will be discussed closer to show time Hair – If cast, you must see us before you get a haircut. Or you may be asked to get it cut, depending on your role. STRIKE – Each actor will be required to clean up their area after each performance. Before attending the Cast Party, each actor is required to clean up their belongings, return any props or costumes and respect their space. / We will enlist Parent help to strike the set on Sunday after our final performance to restore the auditorium and get it ready for the holiday concert season.
A Cast Contract will be distributed at the first rehearsal outlining this even further in order to help this production to run smoothly. We don’t want to sound harsh, we just need you to be in attendance at all called rehearsals. A sports coach or dance teacher wouldn’t expect anything less from you. Our hope is that your time over the next three months will result in an excellent production and a truly positive experience! Thank you all very much! The Staff is looking forward to everyone putting their best foot forward at Auditions! Should you have any questions regarding the audition process or rehearsal conflicts that are not answered in this packet, please feel free to contact the Directing staff and like us the Keith Valley Middle School Drama Club Facebook page or email below! < https://www.facebook.com/KeithValleyMusicTheatre/ >

Please take into consideration that this is a MAJOR time commitment over the next twelve weeks for all involved (Staff, cast and crew) and we do expect dedication. Please be prepared to meet these challenges before coming in to your audition. “I have read and understood the audition materials, OBLIGATIONS, and information contained in the
packet, I have attached a copy of my CONFLICT CALENDAR and I am willing to make a sincere commitment to this year’s production of “THE LION KING, JR.”
NOTE: By signing this form you also agree that “I am willing to share my photograph or video footage to be used for publicly during auditions, rehearsal, or to share during show time. It may it be used for publicity purposes, on the website, and/or on the Facebook page.” ----------------- ---(Student, sign when completed)
--------------------------(Signature of parent/guardian)
CONFLICT CALENDAR I f you are cast, and you list conflicts on this calendar, they are considered EXCUSED ABSCENCES. This calendar should be completed by you and your parents/guardians and should include any known conflicts that would stop you from attending rehearsals. We have only eight weeks to pull together a major production, so we need to know everyone’s availability up front. Mark all conflict dates and times, through November 26th on the calendar below (or attach a separate page if necessary).
This would include family vacations, day trips, weddings, in-school and community sports teams, banquets, tutoring, music lessons, additional theatre productions, music department rehearsals (choral, Jazz, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra & Symphonic Bands), babysitting, religious holidays, or any other type of conflict that may take place at these times. This information will be used to make up an appropriate rehearsal schedule. We will do our best to work around these conflicts when constructing our rehearsal calendar, but beginning November 26th you must work your conflicts around us. If you have a known recurring conflict that is not listed on this sheet, please see information about our “Absentee Policy.”
NOTE: After completing the conflicts calendar, if you have more than two nights a week marked off realize that you will be missing a m ajor dance rehearsal or a m ajor singing rehearsal. Missing that much material in three months rehearsal span may not make it worth your participation in the production. Weigh this heavily before auditioning for a leading role (because the staff does). The most the staff can consider you for is ENSEMBLE if this is the case. Theater is an intensive experience: If you have never been in a show, the rehearsal process and production week can be very time consuming. When you miss a rehearsal, it impacts the entire cast, not just you. If you are selected to be a lead in this play, it needs to be one of your primary extra-curricular activities for the season. The rehearsal schedule will be dependent on the size or type of each role, but lead characters can expect to attend 1-2 *extra* rehearsals per week. We will work around a reasonable level of conflicts, but your availability MAY impact the size of the role that you are offered.
