Evaluation of Cerebral palsy-causes, symptoms and treatment Spring 2012 Fifteen out of 18 participants have answered the evaluation (83%). 1.

To what extent do you think you have achieved the stated course goals?

Comment: We are very satisfied with this result that indicates that the content was matched to the goals. 2. To what extent do you feel that the course developed your previous knowledge?

Comment: The participants had a heterogenous professional background and the content was aimed to correspond to an advanced level of learning. We therefore feel content with the fact that the distribution of the student’s answers only span from fairly large to very large. 3. To what extent do you feel that the design of the course was appropriate to the goals set?

Comment: We made an effort to have a clear design with the goals stated for each assignment and selfstudy task. Maybe we will have suggestions on how to further improve this aspect later in the evaluation from the students who answered “Fairly large”. 4. To what extent do you feel that the recommended course literature supported your learning?

Comment: It is always difficult to recommend litterature, but we strived to give examples of predominantly books that could form a basis for an understanding of scientific articles within specific areas. We also tried to find review articles of specific areas such as for example family-centred services. To a large extent it seems as if we succeeded in our intention, even though one student is of the opinion that the litterature to a fairly small exent supported the learning. Maybe we will get a hint of the reason later in the evaluation. 5. To what extent do you feel that the teachers were able to support your learning during the course?

Comment: Thank you, we are happy that you felt our support.

6. To what extent do you feel that the tests/exams were appropriately designed with respect to the goals?

Comment: It seems that we to a large extent found a congruence between the content of the assignments and the study goals. We will go through the assignments and see if they can be further improved from this aspect. 7. To what extent do you feel that the workload during the course was reasonable in relation to the extent of the course/number of credits awarded?

Comment: The question is not that easy to understand. Was the workload reasonable to a fairly large and large extent? Or was the workload fairly large/large? It is our impression that the course has a failrly large/large workload. It is however very hard to omitt aspects of the course – we would rather like to add new themes. 8. To what extent do you feel that you have acquired relevant theoretical knowledge?

Comment: We are very happy for this result!

9. To what extent do you feel that the theoretical knowledge can be applied in your clinical practice?

Comment: This is a surprisingly good result. Since most of the study assignments in the course were related to children 10. To what extent do you feel that the course has helped you develop a professional attitude?

Comment: A difficult question. We need to define what we mean by “Professional attitude”. 11. To what extent do you feel that the course has helped you to develop your critical thinking?

Comment: This is an important aspect of courses at an advanced level – we feel content that the students experience that can be more critical in relation to what they read.

12. What is your opinion about the fact that the course was entirely web based with online lectures? Answers: Most of the participants expressed that “Ping Pong was a great tool to use for internet courses. I think it has worked really well and was positively surprised.” A few examples in line with this statement are given here. 1) 2)

Worked out well for me. The course was well planned and the possibility to listen to presentations and read literature was great. 3) The lectures were very thorough and you could re-watch them any number of times you needed. This was helpful to me during the final exam. 4) It suited me very well in my work and family situation. It was good that I could choose by myself when to do my assignments and listen to the lectures. 5) The course was so well planned, very structured and a lot of study material provided so for me it worked very well. It is for me a great advantage not having to travel. Of course it is nice to meet the other participants in real life, but this worked better than I expected. 6) I have attended web based lectures before but I find that this course had better lectures than others. It was better because one could choose when to attend the lecture. Everybody might not be able to look at a lecture at a specific time or date so this is more flexible which I find better. It makes it easier to combine studies with work. 7) For me it was perfect since I hadn't been able to attain the course otherwise at the moment. 8) Jag tyckte att det var ett mycket bra upplägg som passar när man arbetar vid studierna. Riktigt bra webföreläsningar där man har möjlighet att pausa och gå tillbaka. Mycket smidigt. 9) It was hard for me as a not computer-addicted person but it got better, I took much time in the beginning. But interesting. 10) Web-based course was perfect for me. I live in a small town and the distance to the university is far, which makes it difficult to get to lectures. Lectures on the Web was good for me. The Webbased course has been a good way to combine studies with work. 11) This was a very practical solution and I don't think it impacted the course negatively at all. 12) I liked the web-based form and online lectures, but I miss to have hand-outs to do my own writing to the pictures. Comment: We feel very happy about these comments. The next course will have handouts available under “Documents”. Answers: Several students pointed out that the sound in many lectures was difficult to hear. 1) 2)

The audio in some of the lectures could have been better however. Difficult to hear some of the lectures and that they said they were pointing at the screen but you didn´t see anything.

Comment: It was very hard to achieve a good sound on the lectures since that requires good equipment and a special program. Unfortunately we have to live with this problem also during the next course. Other answers: 1)

I didn´t get any days off except what all my colleagues get so my husband was complaining. And hard in the beginning with the English.

2)

Although it would have been nice to, at one or two occasions, meet because it would probably increase the chances of cooperation after the course is finished. The web discussions were sometimes hard, as there were so many comments and sometimes I felt that I could have said my comments and answered to the others comments verbally smoother. But on the other hand it was also instructive to formulate short and informative comments/answers. The pingpong lecture pertaining to study assignment 4 (genesis of lesions) might have had a little more introduction or background information in it. I realize that this is a very difficult topic to lecture on because we students have so little knowledge going into the course about lesions, timing etc. so no matter what it will probably be a tough subject to give an online lecture about. The articles were helpful on this subject. Especially the ones by Krägeloh-Mann et al.

3)

4)

Comment: The study pace in this course is quite high so we can understand that it was sometimes hard to find the time, especially if you work full-time. We also fully agree with the last student that it was hard to find good lectures on lesions on the web. We tried to contract a prominent lecturer of our own but he

had no time to do Web-based lecture. Happy that the recommended articles were of help.

13. What were the strengths of the course? (Give the three most important) Answers: The content: 1) On the edge of what we know today 2) The literature was really interesting and I acquired new theoretical knowledge. 3) You gain a lot of information - both in terms of theory and clinical practice! 4) It covered many important subjects 5) Increasing difficulty Assignments: 1) The examination assignment was really good because you have to repeat lot of the material you have read before and think of it in another perspective. 2) The examination. 3) Demanding and instructive tasks and assignments 4) The assignments "forces" you to search and read a lot of information 5) The assignments 6) All assignments were presented in good time before last date to do them so I could work with the assignments when I had most time Study-groups and discussions: 1) To discuss with other people and to get their ideas 2) The study group. Everybody contributed with interesting questions, experiences and knowledge. 3) The discussions where you tell each other about your clinical experiences 4) You learn how other professions work with CP, their priorities and perspectives, and how to collaborate with them in a constructive manner to find the best solutions. 5) Discussion with other students and teachers 6) The discussions with the other participants. That it was a mix between different professions in the groups 7) The discussions 8) The mix of professions in our groups. (At least in mine). 9) The groupdiscussions Structure and design of the course: 1) The design of the course - the possibility to read literature and take part of the online lectures when it was suitable for me. 2) Lectures on the web has the advantage that you can listen to the parts you do not understand more than once. Especially when the language is another than your native language. 3) You have a high level of influence on what you want to focus on and learn about which allows you to make the course relevant to you, your patients and your work. 7) The structure 8) That it was flexible and one could work at the same time as studying. Teachers: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9)

Good to know that the teachers where easy to approach. The teachers seem knowledgeable and I have found their names in many scientific contexts. Everyone involved has at all times as required been very accommodating and friendly.. Rapid feed back. Engaged teacher Feedback The course leaders very good pedagogic skills Experienced teachers in this small area - lots of knowledge that they kindly shared with us. The importance of evidence based treatments and up to date research to make us stronger in our professions. The assistance from teachers when necessary. The feed-back from you teachers Committed teachers

Comment: We are very happy for these comments. 14. What were the weaknesses of the course? (Give the three most important) Answers: Group-discussions: 1) The discussions might be in even smaller groups. Maybe three at the time. It was sometimes hard to show in the discussion what one had learned and that one had gained the knowledge that are part of the goals. 4) I would have liked to discuss subjects with colleagues who are more experienced concerning CP than me, but they were in other groups. Comments: Out experience from previous courses (and also from the literature on learning in groups) tells us that approximately six discussants is optimal. But this should be related to the subject of the discussion. We will look through the assignments and see if more background facts can we added where it is insufficient. Assignments: 1) It would have been good to have som "förebilder" how the assignment should look like (antal sidor, hur man skriver , med eller utan rubriker osv) 2) I don´t think that those who designed the course thought that so many people working with adults would attend. The assignments could be transposed to grown ups but not a single video or case report described an adult. 3) Mostly focused towards children with Cerebral Palsy 4) Too many assignments in a short space of time 5) Some questions regarding the examination. At first, I didn't understand that we where ment to present 3 different approaches. 6) Confusing instructions especially regarding the examination. Comments: We find it hard to omit assignments even if the workload is high. If there was more time we would have liked to add assignments on e.g. ACC. It is true that the course deals predominantly with children with CP, even if there is a growing body of research on this group. Maybe it should be a separate course? And I will go through the assignments, having the questions from the students in mind, in order to clarify the instructions. Feed-back: 1) I would appreciate to get more information if I had passed or failed each part of the test during the course. 2) Not getting individual feedback on the assignments, when putting quite much work and time in them. 3) it was great to receive group feedback on the discussions, but sometimes I wanted personal feedback on the written parts of the discussion. 4) I would have liked to get more individual response from the teachers. Most respons was to the entire class. Comments: We will use the tool in Ping Pong which allows the student to see if the assignments have failed or passed during the next course. I can also understand the wish for more individual feed-back. However, one important aspect of studying on an advanced level is to be able to evaluate one’s own learning process and progress. Another aspect is that individual feed-back on each assignment would be too time-consuming for me as a teacher. Workload: 1) It runs for a full semester, during which time you have to stay focused and engaged in the course. This can be a challenge when commitments at work take their toll! 2) Sometimes a bit too much workload, when there is much to do at work as well. Comment: We find it hard to see how the workload could be diminished if the goals of the course should be filled. Practical aspects: 1) Being able to print out the lectures on paper 2) The sound quality on some lectures was poor 3) the sound quality of the web-lectures 4) The sound on the lectures could have been better Comment: See above And two remaining: 1) Can’t think about anything at the moment 2) Can't come up with another weakness of the course... 15. Any suggestions for how to improve the course? The assignments 1) Clarify the number of pages, and number of interventions that we were meant to present.

2)

It might be a good idea to place the majority of study assignments during the first half of the course and mix up the types of assignments. I felt that I had more energy at the beginning! 3) And I don´t think that I would take a course again if I´m working full time. I actually wanted to do the assignments better but I didn´t have the time. 4) Maybe add AAC to the curriculum? 5) One assignment on adults would be very interesting, and I think it could enhance the gained knowledge level after the course. 6) Give individual feedback on all assignments and not only on the examination assignment. Although there were a lot of assignments I can't think of excluding any of them. I have learnt a lot in this course and also feel stronger in my profession, so thank you for that! 7) the final assignment might have clearer description on what should be in it. Comment: We will go through all the assignments and try to make them clearer. Group-discussion 1) Tidigare kurs som jag har läst så rekommenderade ni att alla skulle skriva kortare inlägg i pingpong för att det leder till mer diskutioner och jag tycker att det hade varit bra att trycka på det även i den här kursen. 2) Create a journal club to discuss the interesting scientific articles that someone in the course have found. 3) Maybe the groups don’t have to be the same during the whole course? 4) The discussions needs to be changed, maybe try with smaller group so that everyone get the chance to prove that they have gained knowledge that is asked in the goals. 5) I also think it's could widen the discussions if the discussions groups were changing from one assignment to another. 6) I think its good to engage in the discussions from the beginning, because then you get the hang of it early on. Having purely discussion assignments towards the end of the course is a little taxing even though I find it very educational - especially because discussing the pros and cons of treatments or managements is a necessary clinical tool. Comment: All very interesting thoughts that we will consider during the next course. Feed-back 1) More individual feedback on the assignments 2) It was very nice to have the personal thoughts from the staff. More of that! 3) Jag hade velat ha mer individuell feedback på uppgifterna för att veta om man har skrivit så mkt som det var tänkt mm. 4) I would have had more individual feedback. Comment: See No 14. Miscellaneous: 1) I must say that I hade some trouble choosing between the alternativs "fairly poor" fairly good" etc. I have enjoyed the course but the more I´ve learned the more I understand that I don´t know that much :-) Maybe I´m being naiv but I thought we would get some more facts... some specific tips... But still: THANK YOU! 2) Improve the quality of the web-lectures. They are very good as such but the sound was really bad and it would have been such an advantage if it had been possible to see where at the lecturer were pointing. Comment: If we were to give more courses we would have done something about the lectures. But it will be too time-consuming to redo them for one course. 16. What was your overall impression of the course?

Comment: Thank you all for having answered the evaluation! It has been most helpful.
