About Facilities Management Facilities Management (FM) is a multi-award-winning support department; the largest support team at the University employing over 300 members of staff across seven operational service teams. We believe that the physical campus environment, the supporting infrastructure, and the support services provided by FM, form an essential part of the Edge Hill University experience. Our customer profile includes students (Inc. circa 2000 residential bed-spaces), staff, visitors, business partners, commercial clients and the wider community. About this role Reporting to the Head of Environment & Safety Management, you will be a key contributor to the University’s sustainable development agenda, leading the review and development of the University’s respective Environmental Management and Travel Plans. You will also contribute to the development our Traffic and Parking Management Strategy and subordinate provisions (including our Car Parking Policy) to ensure sustainable practices are embedded throughout University operations. As an organisation externally recognised for its commitment to the sustainable development of its estate and innovative approach to improving environmental performance, you will work with key stakeholders from across the organisation, influencing and engaging them with the objective of reducing the University’s environmental impact through continual monitoring and audit.

About you You will have significant experience working as an environmental management practitioner with a sound knowledge of environmental management principles and their practical application within a large and complex organisation. You will have detailed knowledge and understanding of environmental management systems (EMS) and governance frameworks with the ability to clearly translate and articulate these to different audiences within the organisation- from our operational teams to Senior Management – in order to develop their understanding and secure their commitment to improved environmental performance. Specific Responsibilities The role holder will be expected to: 

 





Lead the review, development and implementation of the University’s Environmental Management Strategy, developing plans, procedures and procedural guidance for the effective application of sound environmental management practice, Effectively communicate the wider sustainable development strategy to ensure its aspects are understood by Senior Management across the University Actively participate within the work of the institutional Health, Safety & Environment Committee, contributing to discussions, effectively communicating information to and from the group, acting as the source of authority and expertise on environmental management matters, Develop, co-ordinate and introduce processes to support the implementation of a recognised EMS framework which is appropriate to the HE context i.e. Learning in Future Environments (LiFE), Undertake impact assessments to evaluate the implications of new legislation and identify opportunities for potential funding e.g. HEFCE, to develop business cases in support of key environmental initiatives,











 







Provide oversight of the University’s safety management audit programme, ensuring these are completed in accordance with the agreed schedule, coordinating the work of the Health & Safety Advisor to provide the necessary guidance and support to University departments both prior to and following audit, Lead the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) programme through liaison with Senior Management across the University, identifying appropriate actions and development management plans to effectively address any issues arising from those assessments, Act as facilitator for existing networks and forums i.e. Sustainability Group, Sustainability Champions etc. to promote initiatives and provide appropriate guidance and support to those groups, Lead the review and development of existing environmental management programmes e.g. Environmental Management Strategy, Travel Plan, working with key stakeholders to deliver the objectives of those plans, Work collaboratively with other members of the FM team including the Energy, Property Services, Housekeeping, Campus Support and Catering Services Managers to support the development of schemes which support the overarching Environmental Management Strategy e.g. Carbon Management Plan, Waste Management Strategy, Traffic & Parking Management Strategy, Sustainable Food Policy etc., Develop metrics for effectively monitoring and reporting improvements in environmental performance using appropriate media and technologies, Produce accurate and relevant reports e.g. Annual Reports for presentation to relevant groups i.e. Board of Governors, Health, Safety & Environment Committee and external groups as required, Actively participate in external networking to identify current best practice and benchmarking initiatives that may be used and applied effectively within the University, Proactively track and monitor legislation and sector initiatives and to ensure policies, procedures and operations are compliant and consistent with best practice, Lead the University’s sustainability awareness campaigns e.g. Green Week, Fairtrade Fortnight, Re-use in Halls etc. through collaboration with internal stakeholders i.e. Health, Safety & Environment Committee, Edge Hill Students’ Union, Fairtrade Steering Group etc. and external groups as appropriate.

In addition to the above all Edge Hill University staff are required to: a) Adhere to all Edge Hill’s policies and procedures, including Equality and Diversity and Health and Safety b) Respect confidentiality: all confidential information should be kept in confidence and not released to unauthorised persons c) Undertake appropriate training and development as required

Grade 6, Points 23-26 £25,513 - £27,864 per annum, pro rata

Hours :

21¾ hours per week, Monday-Friday

Note* It is an expectation of this role to very occasionally work outside the agreed core hours to support Open Days, Corporate Events etc. and meet deadlines i.e. budget preparation and submissions which is a core part of this role.
