TRENT ELECTRIC FURNACES A HISTORY OF OUTSTANDING QUALITY

There are three basic types: round rod; flat ribbon; and formed or curved ribbon types, all shown in Fig.1.

Since 1927, TRENT, Incorporated has been one of the pioneers in electrically heated industrial equipment. All TRENT furnaces and ovens have been carefully engineered, and tested to meet the stringent requirements of industrial and governmental customers. The company’s expertise has been focused exclusively on electrically heated equipment and at no time has combustion equipment been built. The value of nearly eight decades of such experience cannot be underestimated. The heat treatment of metals and other materials is a precise process, and requires the proper heat treating equipment to achieve uniform results consistently. BASIC ELECTRIC FURNACE DESIGN

The Rod type has excellent rigidity due to the physical construction, but requires refractory backing plates to dissipate the heat from the element so its effective radiating surface can be increased. The standard Flat Ribbon has a good radiating surface, but needs considerable thickness for support. Both the rod and the standard flat ribbon type elements require auxiliary spacers between turns to prevent creep and springing. These spacers limit the unit coverage per square foot of area. It is usually necessary to have a relatively heavy cross section in the above units to give the required rigidity. Electrical resistance is naturally lower in the above types of elements requiring costly voltage reducing transformers for both

There are three basic types of electric furnaces: Box type for hardening; Air Circulation Type, for annealing or drawing; and Salt Bath for carburizing, hardening and tempering. One linear inch of ribbon A or B has 2 sq, inches of radiating surface

small and medium size furnaces.

TRENT Folded and Formed® Heating Elements

Since electric furnaces are clean and well insulated, many heat treating operations can be carried out in the machine shop, tool room, or in the production line, where combustion furnaces might not be satisfactory.

The fundamental engineering principles of TRENT furnaces and ovens are the same today as they were in the early units. This includes the compact design, and TRENT’s innovative Folded and Formed® (F&F®) metallic resistor heating element design, which are incorporated in most of the TRENT furnaces.

The FOLDED and FORMED® heating element, developed and created by TRENT, Inc., are made from flat ribbon, folded into return bends and then formed or curved to give physical rigidity. They are supported in position inside the furnace by refractory porcelains which are keyed and mounted to the brick chamber liner as shown in Fig. 2. The multiple row design of TRENT FOLDED and Formed® heating elements permits selective replacements for lower maintenance costs and shorter production down time. ADVANTAGES OF TRENT FOLDED & FORMED® HEATING ELEMENTS

HEATING ELEMENT SELECTION The heart of an electric furnace is the heating elements, and in selecting the type and form of heating elements, careful consideration must be given to construction and shape.

The advantage of rod type elements is strength. The advantage of flat ribbon is its greater surface area for use in dissipating heat generated without backing plates. Through the process of forming flat ribbon, the FOLDED and

FORMED® element develops a strength found greater than rod by test, because of greater cross sectional inertia. Since F&F® heating elements is made from flat ribbon, it has the greater radiating area of flat ribbon, hence this element offers both major advantages of its counterparts. As mentioned before, a ribbon type element has a greater surface area for a given cross section than a rod type, and the TRENT FOLDED and FORMED® element has this advantage combined with the added support feature. The conventional ribbon type element is generally mounted edgewise against the furnace wall with the strands close together resulting in inner radiation which raises the temperature of the element. The TRENT F&F® element, on the other hand, is folded so that the concave side of the ribbon is facing the furnace charge. This allows the heat to get away from the unit, lowers the unit temperature, and thus increases unit life. As shown in Figure 1, the FOLDED AND FORMED® element is only a fraction of the thickness of rod type furnace elements, but is formed to give even greater strength. This thinner cross section of the element raises the resistance of the circuit and permits the operation of most furnaces directly on line voltage, thus eliminating costly transformer. The TRENT F&F® element is fabricated from wrought alloy having a composition of 80% nickel and 20% chrome with less than 1% iron as an impurity. This has long been recognized by furnace manufacturers as the best alloy used in electric furnaces for sustained temperatures of 1850°F or for short periods up to 2000°F.

FIG.3 given wattage and more rigid than the rod type due to a special forming operation shown in Fig. 1[B]. It can be readily seen that this unit has advantages over both the rod element and the standard flat ribbon element. Auxiliary backing refractory porcelain plates are not necessary, and the resulting heat lag is eliminated. When a heating element of the ribbon type or rod type is over .0625“ in thickness or diameter, the temperature gradient between the surface of the element and the inside becomes appreciable. This condition will accelerate burn-outs should the element be operated at too high a temperature for a long period of time. In comparing a standard ribbon 1” wide x .0159” thick as shown in Fig. 1[A] to a rod of the same cross sectional area (Fig. 1[C]) results in a rod diameter of .142”; the rod is nine times thicker than the ribbon and has less than one-fourth of the radiating area. When FOLDED and FORMED® ribbon is made by the TRENT method, it has greater strength than either the rod or the flat ribbon unit, and is strong enough to be self-supporting. The greater surface area obtained with a formed ribbon element will give better heat transfer from the unit to the surrounding air by convection, conduction, and radiation, without the aid of special refractory plated or backing plates. FIG 3 shows typical sections of F&F® heating elements supported against the lining of the furnace chamber by H shaped refractory porcelains. This example also shows that, when the heat is not radiated directly to the work in the furnace, the element heats the surface of the firebrick insulation, which, in turn, radiates the heat onto the workload, creating a uniform blanket of heat on all walls.

Fig. 2

FURNACE CONTROL This unit is manufactured from standard ribbons using thicknesses between fifteen and thirty thousands of an inch, permitting the unit to be light in weight, and resulting in reduced furnace heat-up time.

A control system must be selected based on the requirements of the process. Anything from a basic cost effective on/off control to a SCR package, which has been proven to be efficient and effective, can be provided to meet your needs.

POT TYPE FURNACES PF Series --- 1400°F (760°C) Max. TRENT Pot Furnaces are used in the metal working industry for lead hardening, case hardening, drawing, tempering, annealing, brazing, pre-heating and carbonizing through the use of a wide choice of salts available. Pot furnaces eliminate the atmosphere problem by excluding it; therefore, scaling, oxidation and de-carbonization are avoided without the necessity of costly atmosphere equipment. The furnace is designed so that radiant heat is uniformly applied to the outside of the pot. This increases pot life as compared to localized hot spot heating in combustion type furnaces. The molten bath furnace is considered superior to radiant heat methods by many experts because it usually gives a faster, more uniform heat application by conduction than is possible using radiant heat.

VERTICAL RETORT FURNACES VR Series --- 2000°F (1093°C) Max.

Insulated Retort Cover

The TRENT Vertical Retort Furnace employs the same basic design features as the TRENT Pot Type Furnace with the exception that a high alloy gas tight retort is substituted for the salt pot. This retort is complete with insulated cover containing thermowell, gas inlet and outlet. The furnace is used primarily in metal working industry for such operations as sintering, brazing, annealing, etc., under controlled atmospheres. It is also used in research facilities for numerous purposes. RETORT OPERATION CONTROL A controlling pyrometer thermocouple is placed in the furnace heating chamber. Another thermocouple is placed in the retort thermowell. Each thermocouple is wired to a separate control instrument. Both controller contacts are wired in series so that if heat chamber temperature approaches set temperature before the material in the retort comes to temperature. The heat chamber temperature is controlled until the material in the retort comes to temperature. At that point, the retort control takes over. This system prevents damage to heating elements from over-temperature in heating chamber and insures a maximum safe heating rate.

M2-CAH Series --- 1400°F (760°C) Max. The TRENT M2-CAH Series Air Draw or Vertical Pit Furnace is designed to meet the demands of the Heat Treating Industry for a precise and efficient furnace for drawing, tempering and annealing at temperatures up to 1400’F. The M2-CAH Design satisfies the industry requirements of space economy, acquisition economy, rugged construction and precise duplication of results in each processed batch.

High Temperature Insulation

Folded & Formed®

The M2 design embodies an upper work chamber and lower fan chamber beneath Heating Elements this work chamber. The exterior furnace shell is of heavy gauge carbon steel and painted with a heat resistant paint. The entire furnace is insulated with high grade Alloy Steel Work Basket with Solid brick for the chamber liner, backed by courses of medium temperature insulating Sides slabs for minimum heat loss and lower outer casing temperature. The heating elements are TRENT FOLDED & FORMED® alloy ribbon type located only on the Heavy Screen side walls of the upper or work chamber and mounted to ceramic element retainBasket Bottom ers that are keyed to the brick chamber liner. In the lower chamber a plug type high temperature alloy blade fan is mounted, powered by a heavy duty indirect drive Alloy Steel motor mounted to furnace legs. A fixture support jig of alloy construction which Recirculating supports the load basket is located above the fan. The load basket is also alloy Fan construction and has solid metal sides and a heavy duty screen bottom. The solid metal load basket sides serve a dual purpose; to diffuse the direct radiant heat and Fan Motor prevent it from coming into direct contact with the work load proper and also to act as the air recirculation channel wall. The air recirculation pattern is such that air enters the work basket at the top, passes downward through the load, through the Air Draw Furnace basket screen and sucked into the fan, which then expels the air sideways into the entire annular space surrounding the fan in the lower chamber. The pressure forces the air upwards along the side walls of the fan chamber and then into the space between the load basket and upper chamber sidewalls where the FOLDED & FORMED® heating elements are located. As the air passes thru this space it is continuously reheated prior to its re-entrance into the work basket at the top. Alloy baffles are employed where required to afford uniformity of air flow. The furnace is delivered with control thermocouple installed. Add your own control package or let TRENT configure one for you

MUFFLE DESIGN BOX FURNACES HM Series Muffle Design --- 1900°F (1083°C) Max. The demand for small atmosphere furnaces, where atmosphere control must be positive yet can effectively operate without atmosphere generating equipment has been met by TRENT through the HM Muffle design box furnace. This furnace can be used for tool hardening, low temperature brazing, bright annealing, general metal heat treating and other processes requiring a controlled atmosphere up to 1900”F (1083°C). Like the H Series Box Furnaces the HM muffle Design Series furnaces utilize TRENT Folded and Formed® alloy ribbon type heating elements which are located on both side walls, top and bottom of the chamber and mounted to ceramic element retainers keyed to the brick chamber wall. These elements are replaced by simply sliding them in and out of the ceramic retainers. Heating elements are spaced to assure a uniform temperature throughout The furnace is equipped with a gas tight muffle made of high alloy metal complete with atmosphere inlet, outlet and thermowell. The muffle feature permits the use of bottled gases. For purposes of quick cooling, a pressure blower system may be added to this furnace at slight additional cost. If desired, the muffle may be mounted to an optional wheeled dolly to permit quick and easy removal of muffle for cooling purposes.

HM Series Muffle Design Box Furnace with dolly and remote control panel

Furnace has operating temperature limitation of 1900’F (1083°C).

RETORT OPERATION CONTROL:

A controlling pyrometer thermocouple is placed in the furnace heating chamber. Another thermocouple is placed in the retort thermowell. Each thermocouple is wired to a separate control instrument. Both controller contacts are wired in series so that if the heat chamber temperature approaches set temperature before material in retort comes to temperature, the heat chamber temperature is controlled. Then as material in the retort comes to temperature the retort control takes over. This system prevents damage to heating elements through over-temperature in the heating chamber and insures a maximum safe heating rate.

HORIZONTAL RECIRCULATING FURNACES GF Series --- 1400°F (790°C) Max.

Vertical Lift Door

TRENT GF Series Horizontal Air Recirculating Furnace is used in the metal working and glass industry for annealing glassware, annealing and cleaning of distillation columns and drying. The metal trades use this furnace extensively for tempering, aging, drawing and other heating operations. Mounted in the furnace chamber is a 310 type stainless steel four-sided muffle of heavy gauge stock. The rear wall of the muffle has a guarded opening behind which is an alloy steel centrifugal flow type fan. The fan draws air across and around the work load in the muffle, with air passing horizontally from front to back, then returns air to the front of the furnace through the annular space between the muffle outer wall and the furnace inner liner, where the heating elements are located. The air passes through this space on all four sides of the muffle for continuous and even reheating.

HORIZONTAL RECIRCULATING FURNACES GFH Series --- 1750°F (954°C) Max. TRENT GFH Series Horizontal Air Recirculating Furnace is used in the metal working and glass industry for annealing, heat treating, etc at temperatures greater than 1400°F. Similar in design to the GF Series Furnaces, the furnace chamber is a high alloy four-sided muffle. The rear wall of the muffle has a guarded opening behind which is a high alloy steel centrifugal flow type fan.

HIGH TEMPERATURE BOX FURNACES

SCR Series --- 2500°F (1371°C) to 2750°F (1510°C) Max. The TRENT SCR Series High Temperature Box Furnaces is designed to operate at temperatures up to 2500°F (1371°C) in a reducing atmosphere and 2750°F (1510°C) in an air atmosphere. The outer casing is reinforced welded carbon steel, lined with two grades of laminated, high temperature insulation. The heating elements are silicon carbide type resistors located on the ceiling and beneath a silicon carbide hearth plate. These elements are connected in series for 240 or 480 volt operation. The brick-lined furnace chamber reflects heat, radiating it into the charge. This also aids in maintaining fine temperature distribution throughout the furnace. With the heating elements located beneath the hearth are protected against scale and accidental breakage.
