Class #

Description

0323

Were quilts really used as signal codes for runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad? Do some African American ‘spirituals’ really have double meanings and did they send a kind of secret message in song? To find answers to these and many other questions, join Janet Bird of the Lorain County Historical Society and members of the Bowling Green State University Firelands A Cappella Choir as we kick-off the fall semester of ElderCollege!

0328

Free and open to anyone interested in finding out more about ElderCollege at BGSU Firelands Individualism in the US began as a political ideal, transformed into an economic ideal, and then changed into a social ideal. Many have tried to explain the political disengagement of American society, and Dr. Walls’ work makes a contribution by exploring an ideological explanation. Unless you were the parent or loved one of a sick hospitalized child, the profession of child life might be foreign to you. Class participants will learn the evolution of the field, define the roles and services provided by a child life specialist, and discuss why child life is important. With a growing population of seniors, not only do many people worry about needing more funds to live longer, they also may suffer from diminished capacity. These two worries often lead to seniors trusting individuals with their financial decisions. Talk to the State Regulator and the Ohio Division of Securities, to understand (1) how to avoid being a victim of financial exploitation, and (2) the most common types of schemes and scams. Few Ohioans realize that Union General James B. McPherson, of Clyde, Ohio, was a soldier of remarkable ability and accomplishment. His tragic death during the Battle of Atlanta in 1864 cut short a very promising life. This lecture tells the journey of a self-made man who went on to make his mark on our nation’s history. This class will explore the geologic history, glacial history, and active geologic settings of northern Ohio. The sandstones, limestones, and shales provide much insight into environmental changes on our continent over millions of years. The geologic history of Ohio is important when considering issues such as ground water, hydraulic fracturing, quarrying, seismology, and much more!

Firelands Habitat for Humanity has built 93 affordable homes over the past 25 years in Erie and Huron Counties. These homes are built by future homeowners and volunteers. The history of Firelands Habitat will be discussed including recent and future building plans. ReStore Director, Deb Pankow, will discuss the ReStore concept, volunteer opportunities, and how the profits from the ReStore help build Habitat houses.

This is a three-part series. Part I will discuss the five main paradoxes of the Gilded Age as a framework for understanding this period in American history. The paradoxes included in Part I will be the contrast between the ending of the Civil War and the Reconstruction’s failure to politically, socially, and economically reform the South after the Civil War. Part II is offered on October 31, 2016. This is the second of a three-part series. Part II will cover the rise of American industry in the late 19th century coupled with the accompanying labor strife, malpractices of big business, and the negative consequences of laissez-faire capitalism. The correlation between America’s rapid industrialization and its impact upon immigrants and American labor will be explored in detail. Part III is offered on November 7, 2016. Rutherford Hayes was a decorated veteran of the Civil War, a three term governor of Ohio whose accomplishments focused on the reform of prisons, construction of facilities for the mentally handicapped, education, and fighting for the creation of The Ohio State University. He focused on the long overdue reform of the Civil Service, fought against discrimination based on race, peaceably concluded violent labor strikes, and forwarded the education of freemen. It has been reported that 8 out of 10 adults in America will experience back pain at some point in their life. The majority of low back pain is caused by repeated stress on the back and is rarely caused by one specific incident. Learn basic back anatomy and function, different types of back stretches, proper lifting techniques, and much more!

Settle down with a good book this fall! “The Personal History of Rachel Dupree” by Ann Weisgarber, is an award-winning novel with an incredible heart that opens a window on the little-known history of African American homesteaders and gives voice to an extraordinary heroine who embodies the spirit that built America. Join moderator, Sari Kelley, in a group discussion to share your own thoughts after reading this book. Books are not provided. The Allen Memorial Art Museum has an outstanding collection of nearly 14,000 works of art that provide a comprehensive overview of the history of art from a variety of cultures. The collection is particularly strong in European art from the 15th century to today. Notably, the collection of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art is also particularly strong. This lecture will focus on some of the highlights of the European art collection, with a special emphasis on the museum’s extensive collection of prints.
