Nickell beats Lewis for Senior KO title

The team led by Nick Nickell, erased a small halftime deficit with a 43-17 third quarter and went on to a 154-125 win over the Paul Lewis squad in the Baze Senior Knockout Teams. Four TDs, two centuries of experience

Foundation’s call answered by teen programmers

Early this year, the ACBL Educational Foundation announced a contest to create an easy-to-use program to teach beginners how to play bridge and offered a

The foundation board received several entries for the contest, and this week, the Ed Foundation announced a surprising winner: 16-year-old Eric Lou, working together with his brother, 19-year-old Tim Lou, of New Jersey. “We were skeptical at first, but their presentation was amazing,” said Barbara Heller, president of the foundation. The relative youth of the contestants gave some of the foundation trustees pause, but Eric, the impresario of the brotherly duo, was unfazed with these concerns. “I know what kids want,” said the high school junior, arguing that his (and his brother’s) youth was an advantage in this type of project because they knew what types of features young players – and new players of any age – like to see in tutorial software. Eric stressed that the software needs to strike the right balance between being fun and being educational, with the greater weight given to the continued on page 13

Do’s and Don’ts to help your game – Part 6 By Brent Manley

DO Get in there and compete, especially at favorable vulnerability. The late, great Edgar Kaplan once lamented that in the early days of tournament bridge, players were not so eager to get into the bidding once an opponent had opened, especially if the opening was 1NT. The days of such timid bidding are long gone, however, as more and more players – even those with limited experience – are mixing it up with courage if not confidence. A lot of the boldness has developed as players study the Law of Total Tricks promoted by Marty Bergen and Larry Cohen, the latter in a couple of books. Not everyone embraces the Law, and some players do not use it correctly, but it’s a factor in the bid ’em up style you see in players today. It’s an oversimplification, but the Law essentially says that, when both sides have roughly equal assets (high-card points), it is safe to bid up to a level equal to the number of trumps held by the partnership. “Safe” includes the idea that if you bid to 3♥ with nine trumps and go down, the other side can probably make a contract that would produce a better score for them than beating you by a trick or two, especially if you’re not vulnerable (assuming they don’t double). There is, of course, some danger in overcalling. The next player might have a big stack in your suit and you might end up being doubled and surrendering a big number. There are, however, dangers in not bidding. For one, if you give the opponents a free ride in the auction, they will arrive at their best contract more often than not. If you can take up their bidding space and put pressure on them by elevating the level of the bidding, you will often have an advantage.

The opening lead is the ♠10. When dummy comes down, you see partner has his bid. Plan the play. Solution You have 10 top tricks and have to decide whether to try for your two extra tricks in clubs or hearts. Look at it this way. If you run the ♥J, hoping East has the queen, you will make your slam 50% of the time. Perhaps more. Say West has

Another consideration is that you could miss game – even slam occasionally – if you fail to compete. There are lots of books about competitive bidding that are filled with good advice and useful conventions for making life more difficult for the opponents. I recommend that you and your partner get your hands on one or two of them and study them together. DON’T Make off-shape takeout doubles. This is one method of competing that I see among newer players more often than I should. Not long ago at the bridge club in Memphis, I opened 1♠ and heard a takeout double on my left. Our side won the auction and as play developed, I noted that the doubler had a singleton diamond in a hand that had no extra high-card strength. When I commented about doubling with a singleton in an unbid suit, the doubler said, “But I had 14 points!” the ♥Q and doesn’t have the ♥A. He might not return a heart and now you have a chance if the club finesse works. So running the ♥J actually gives you a bit more than a 50% chance. Now let’s consider clubs. If you take the club finesse and it works, you still need the clubs to break 3-3. This comes to 18%. But you aren’t exactly dead if they break 4-2. You can’t give up a club, but you can cross to dummy and run the ♥J. You can’t make the contract if East has the ♥A, (he will simply take it and the fourth club as well) you must play West for the ♥A. It’s about a 30% chance that all this will happen. The bottom line is that it is far better to attack hearts rather than clubs because you need only one piece of good news, the ♥Q with East, to make 6NT. Working with clubs and finding the ♣Q with East is still not enough to guarantee the contract. More good news is needed. The full deal:

I asked him what he would have done if his partner had bid diamonds? “I would have bid 2NT,” he said. Had I been inclined to continue the discussion, I would have noted that doubling and bidding notrump shows a hand too strong for a 1NT overcall, i.e., a balanced hand with 19-20 high-card points. How else would you describe such a hand? If you overcall 1NT with 19 HCP, partner is not going to make a move with 6 or 7 HCP and you will almost surely miss game. Sometimes you just don’t have a good bid for that 14-point hand. Often, however, you will have a chance to get into the auction anyway. Say your right-hand opponent opens 1♦ and you hold ♠A J 7 3 ♥6 4 ♦K Q 7 ♣K J 9 7 You can’t double with a doubleton in an unbid suit, your spade suit is flimsy and bidding 2♣ would be silly, so you have to pass. But suppose LHO bids 1♥ and RHO raises to 2♥. Now you can double to show a decent hand with support for the unbid suits – spades and clubs. Redmond WA, and Larry Brobst, Fort Dodge IA. At one point in her life, it appeared Barton-Paine was headed on a different career path. She studied communications at San Francisco State University, and was staff photographer for the San Francisco Warriors of the NBA for six years. She later worked at a local television station. Eventually, the love of bridge she acquired growing up became too compelling. Her parents, George and Mary Barton, started the Barton Bridge Studio in the 1930s and kept it going with lots of hard work. “My parents worked almost all the time,” Barton-Paine says. She knew about bridge from being at the club but had never played until one night, just as she and her mother were about to leave the club to go to a movie, her father told them they were needed to fill out half a table. Barton-Paine and her mom had an average game – a triumph, all things considered. In a game not long after that, 11-year-old BartonPaine learned something about the rules of bridge. Holding a hand with 13 high-card points, she heard her right-hand opponent pass as dealer. “Double,” she said. “Director!” the opponents cried. Barton-Paine thought double was the way you showed an opening hand. That slight misstep did nothing to impede her progress in bridge, and she played with many of the top players in the San Francisco area, including Mike Lawrence, then a student at the University of California at Berkeley, Hugh Ross, Peter Pender and Peter Rank. She was mentored by the late TD Sid Davidson. One of her biggest thrills as a player came at the year-end regional in Reno, where she and Gary Zeiger, now a national TD, won the Mixed Pairs playing four-card majors and only two conventions: Stayman and Blackwood. “Dianne is a heck of a player,” Zeiger says, adding that limiting conventions gave them an edge. “We were concentrating on what we were doing rather than trying to remember our system.” In 1961, Barton-Paine became a celebrity of sorts by becoming the Youngest Life Master. She was featured in the Saturday Evening Post and invited to appear on the game show To Tell the Truth. Although she was playing a lot, Barton-Paine gravitated to directing. She considers herself a “ very good” floor director. In that job, she applies a lot of what she learned at her parents’ bridge club. “Mom and Dad were so good with people,” she says. “They did everything they could to make people comfortable and happy.” Barton-Paine is sensitive to the wants and needs of players, and when she could see how much slow play frustrates many players, she tried a different approach, putting toy turtles on the tables of slow players as a warning. When that effort lost effectiveness, she took to sorting the cards that slow East-West players were going to pick up in the next round and informing them that their new opponents were waiting for them. Known to fellow TDs as “Peanut” for her diminutive stature, Barton-Paine says she likes the problem-solving aspect of directing. She still runs one game a week at her club called Pips. Her game averages about 20 tables. After all these years, she still remembers telling her parents she would never be a bridge director because “I saw how hard they worked.” At a recent regional tournament in California, veteran TD Tom Quinlan wrote this about Barton-Paine in the tournament’s Daily Bulletin: “Dianne is still doing what she has always believed a TD does: presenting an enjoyable bridge experience for all the players in a comfortable, welcoming environment with a fair, proper and equitable contest.” Charles MacCracken Barton-Paine and McCracken were up-andcoming directors in the San Francisco area at about continued on page 11

Monitoring

At this and future North American Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by officials. By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table. This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Bridge Bucks and Check Cashing

From Saturday, Nov. 26, through Saturday, Dec. 3, Bridge Bucks/Check Cashing services will be available on the lobby level across from the Bridge Registration Desk. The hours of operation will be 9:30 to 10 a.m., and Noon to 1 p.m. Players may use VISA, MasterCard, Discover and American Express to purchase Bridge Bucks. There is a $500 limit on check cashing.

Appealing a ruling

Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what is wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Use of the bidding box ­-Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time. When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Youth and Junior entries

Coupons will be made available for junior members in good standing for entry into events at NABCs: Any player under the age of 26 years who is a full-time student (must provide proof of eligibility) will be entitled to coupons that can be used for any event. These coupons will have a value of $10 per session. Any player under the age of 21 years will be entitled to coupons that can be used for any event. These coupons will have a value of $10 per session. Any player 19 years and under will be granted free plays for each session of regionally rated events. Players under the age of 26 years named to teams to represent Zone 2 NBOs in world competitions for NABCs occurring between the time they are named to the team and the world championship will receive free plays at NABCs when playing with members of their team or members of another team representing a Zone 2

Using the Stop card during the auction requests the next bidder to pause 10 seconds after a jump in the bidding. TD Matt Koltnow explains that using the Stop card is optional, and that while the procedure is included in the regulations and is not a law, employing the Stop card helps players comply with Law 73D: “It is desirable for players to maintain steady tempo and unvarying manner.” The purpose of the Stop card is two-fold: 1. It helps the opponents avoid transmitting Unauthorized Information by acting too slowly or too quickly. 2. It helps all four players “play bridge” by looking at the auction rather than reading meanings into fast bids and hesitations. Players who employ the Stop card must consistently use it in all jump-bid situations, lest the inconsistency be interpreted as information. For example, a consistent Stop card user must employ it preceding 3NT in an auction such as 1NT–(Pass)– 3NT, and the next bidder should still pause and look at their cards before making a call. “Taking time, even in an easy auction, allows you to use that same 10 seconds that you’re legally entitled to after any skip bid,” says Koltnow. Like the Alert card, the Stop card is used for the benefit of the opponents, not partner. Koltnow says that more experienced players are expected to take time after a jump in the bidding whether or not a Stop card is used.

How to Work Acrostics Puzzles

The grid of the puzzle below is not a crossword; it’s a quotation from a bridge book written by one of our old-time players … one whose name will be recognized by all of us. The words in the quote don’t necessarily end at the right edge of each horizontal line; they only end when a black square follows a group of the numbered letters. And the unique thing about acrostic puzzles is that the first letter of each clue answer, reading down from CLUE A through the final clue, will spell out the name of the book’s author

… followed by the title of that book! You will notice that ALL letters in the quote are numbered; these numbers are followed by a clue letter referral, which tells the solver which of the clue answers will give you that particular letter. Also, in this puzzle note that three of the clues are marked with an (*). In each of those three clues, tricky cryptic Anglo-American word play is being used. The three clues in this puzzle include either an anagram, a hidden word, or a double meaning.

This will help you come to the correct answer to that particular clue. Working in both directions … from the clues to the grid and vice versa… is the secret (and the fun!) in solving acrostics. Each day will give a new tip to the user and virtual coins will be awarded if they complete the challenge.” Using virtual coins as an incentive to use the software will tie into encouraging users to try live bridge at clubs and tournaments. “The application will feature an in-app store that will award the user ‘coins’ whenever the daily challenge or a hand is completed. In this virtual store, the user can spend their coins and buy items to customize the app. For example, the user can buy different table backgrounds and card backs to look more appealing in the app. If possible, it would be great if they could buy items from bridge supply

houses using their coins. In the store, the users will be notified that if they go to a club or tournament, the director will give them a code to enter into the program and this will award them with a bunch of coins. This will give the users an incentive to leave their house and go to local events, and that is exactly what we want them to do,” said Eric. The chief emphasis of the software will be entertainment, a point that Eric repeatedly emphasizes in the presentation. “This game will definitely be fun to play. While previous bridge games focused only on the education aspect, my new game is actually like a game. With the daily challenge, the store, and rising levels, the entertainment aspect of the game will be greater than the educational aspect. “In addition, the user can create their own login account and profile. This way, they can personalize the application and save their progress across multiple devices. It will also seem more real when they are playing against other people online. “The game will be appropriately challenging. The daily challenge will be set to a certain difficulty based on the level of the user. For example, when the user just downloads the application, their level is beginner. After they rise to the intermediate and expert levels, they can be given daily challenges that are more complex. “To increase the competitiveness of the game, there will be a monthly leaderboard. The more experience points you earn from winning games, the higher you are on the leaderboards. At the end of the month, your rank on the leaderboard determines how many bonus coins you earn.” The Lou brothers plan to have a beta version ready to demonstrate in time for the Spring NABC in 2017.

the same time. He worked his first tournament in 1962, his first NABC a year later. In all the years since, he has lost none of the enthusiasm for bridge that he had when he first realized its greatness. “The game still holds the same fascination as when I was a pre-teen,” he says. MacCracken, a national tournament director since the mid-1990s, was predestined to love bridge, growing up in a cardplaying home. He played pinochle and canasta, even bridge when the need for a fill-in was desperate. MacCracken was born in Los Angeles, later moving to Texas. When he was 11, the family moved to Boston (his father worked for the U.S. State Department). By the time he entered college to study engineering, the family had moved to San Francisco. College lasted one year – “I had lousy study habits,” he says – so he followed the family to the West Coast. After another year of college – same results – MacCracken started playing bridge, developing a friendship with Doug Drury, who invented the convention bearing his name, and his wife, Peggy. In 1960, he moved into their Victorian home, which had a bridge club on the ground floor. A lot of bridge learning went on while he was with the Drurys. “We probably spent 13 or 14 hours a day playing or discussing bridge,” MacCracken says. While he was developing as a player – he has won more board-a-match teams than he can count – MacCracken helped run the bridge club and filled in as a partner when needed. MacCracken’s best result in high-level competition is his second-place finish in the Mitchell Board-a-Match Teams in 1969. He also proudly recalls winning a regional mixed pairs with Hall of Famer Mary Jane Farell. Directing at the Drurys’ club eventually led to tournament work, and he honed his skills picking up sheets in the days when the posting of results and scoring were done by hand. In 1962, he was hired to work at the huge Bridge Week tournament in Los Angeles, at the time the largest regional on the ACBL calendar. The Western Confernce merged with the ACBL in the late 1960s and when it was decided that ACBL Headquarters should move from Greenwich CT to Memphis, MacCracken was recruited to help with the transition and to become tournament coordinator. In the fall of 1972, MacCracken loaded up his 1961 Ford Falcon with all his worldly possessions – plus two cases of California wine – and drove from San Francisco to western Tennessee, where he has lived ever since. Of the time he spent at ACBL Headquarters, MacCracken is proudest of his contributions to the development of the first computer scoring program, which was written by Merlin Vilhauer and Marvin Hamm of Portland OR. The introduction of computer scoring was the beginning of the end of hand-scored games, which provided more personal interaction between players and TDs, but MacCracken says it was inevitable: “You can’t stop progress. It had to come.” MacCracken worked at ACBL Headquarters until 1989, when he returned to the field. Even after more than five decades, he still keeps a busy schedule. He reckons he is away from home 35 weekends a year, but wouldn’t change jobs for anything. Being a TD, he says, “means never working in a closed environment where people get on your nerves day in and day out and the problems are always there. Also, I’m dealing with intelligent people, and that keeps me thinking and trying to make things better. The work can be stressful, but it’s a good stress.” The TDs, he says, have a saying: “Monday always comes.” MacCracken says that the legendary TD Phil Wood was an early influence on him. “I learned so much about dealing with fellow staff members that was invaluable.” National TD Patty Johnson is among MacCracken’s admirers. “Charlie is one of the calmest, most respected directors. He goes out of his way to be helpful to players and fellow TDs – and I cherish his friendship.”

Roger Putnam Roger Putnam recalls that when he started working as a TD in the 1960s, the skill he and other directors needed was “the ability to add quickly and accurately.” That was, of course, in the days before computers took over the scoring. He later found that what attracted him to bridge in the first place – “I liked the people,” – also applied to directing. Putnam, 74, has always lived in the Northwest, traveling with the family as his father, who was in the U.S. Air Force, was reassigned. After living in Oregon and Tacoma WA, he settled in the Seattle area. At the University of Washington, Putnam signed up to study math and science but soon discovered that math “was beyond me.” Before long, he had enlisted in the Air Force. The college enrollment was not entirely wasted, however. It was in the student union at Washington that he discovered bridge in 1960. He had been kibitzing the games without playing when he was called upon to fill in for a missing player. It went “fairly well,” as he recalls, and before long he was hooked. While Putnam was in the Air Force working as a flight simulator specialist, he met his future wife, Margo. That was in 1965. They married in 1984. When they played together at local clubs, they were usually asked to help with the manual scoring. When Putnam left the Air Force after four years, he earned money as a director, applying some of the skills he learned as a player to the directing work. “You have to be able to read what people are doing and thinking,” he says, “and as a tournament director you have to know when to crack a joke and when to shut up.” At a Seattle sectional in the mid-1960s, Putnam was called upon by Phil Wood to help as a TD, and he later invited Putnam to work at a sectional in Tacoma. Putnam took the tournament director’s course at the 1967 Spring NABC in Seattle. Wood was one of Putnam’s biggest fans, and in 1969, Wood asked Putnam to work at the NABC in Los Angeles. That same year, Putnam was added to the ACBL’s list of full-time TDs. He has been a national director since 1985. Putnam still recalls how fast Wood could add a scoresheet. “Nobody could touch him at adding,” Putnam says. He recalls working a tournament with Wood where the senior TD predicted that a particular event would attract 30 tables, and he assigned Putnam to work out a movement for the game. Putnam’s solution: six five-table sections with 10-board sessions and movement of pairs after each session. It was a great success and a significant learning experience for Putnam. One of Putnam’s biggest fans is Tom Marsh, the national TD from San Antonio TX. “I ran a cruise a couple of years ago,” says Marsh, “and that’s where you want people who are really, really friendly. Roger was the first person to come to mind. He is just a fabulous person.” Putnam will hit the 50-year mark next summer and has been working part-time recently. He still feels the same about his job as he did when he started. “I like intelligent people,” he says, “and the bridge people are a cut above average. I feel very blessed because I fell into a profession where I love my avocation and my vocation. There’s always something new and it’s always challenging. It’s such a good feeling when it comes together and goes well.” Larry Brobst Larry Brobst isn’t seen much at NABCs because he doesn’t usually work the floor. He is part of the Services team whose members set up and disassemble the equipment needed for the tournament. Another important job is duplicating boards, and that’s what Brobst, 75, spends his time doing at ACBL’s big tournaments. He and Murry Hayes, of the Headquarters staff, spend their time duplicating thousands of deals for players in all the

pairs games. Brobst was born in the small Iowa town of Scranton. He now lives in Fort Dodge IA. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake IA, where he studied biology with minors in chemistry and history. In 1962, he went to work for Fort Dodge Laboratories – now Fort Dodge Animal Health – working in several different departments before he retired after 40 years with the company. When he was introduced to bridge in 1963 by a co-worker at the company, it didn’t take long for him to take to the game. His parents had been auction bridge players and Brobst was a card player from an early age. Brobst’s first foray into the duplicate world didn’t go well, but he was not discouraged. He became a regular at the Fort Dodge Duplicate Bridge Club. After a couple of years, he was asked by the club manager to start running some games. The manager was working on becoming a Life Master and attending lots of tournaments, so he needed Brobst’s help. Brobst had no experience with directing other than what he had observed as a player, but he agreed. Just as bridge had become a serious interest for Brobst, so did directing. He took a correspondence course on directing and soon caught the attention of some experienced TDs. In the fall of 1967, he got a call from one of the two Iowa TDs who worked for the ACBL. Orm Lindsey told Brobst that a director expected to work at a sectional in Waterloo IA could not get off from his regular job. Could Brobst help out? “I enjoyed it,” Brobst recalls. “I liked working with the people, and I liked the camaraderie.” Toward the end of his primary career, Brobst used vacation to work tournaments for the ACBL and has been part-time from the start. When he’s not working at ACBL tournaments, Brobst directs three sessions a week at the Fort Dodge DBC, “and I read a lot.” TD Tom Marsh says he enjoys working with Brobst. At tournaments where they work together, says Marsh, “Larry does supplies He is really organized. Whatever you want, it’s there. Everyone loves Larry.”

Electronic Device Policy

1.11.1 The electronic device policy at NABCs allows players to bring electronic devices into the playing area. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off. 1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session. 1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the exception of those persons designated by the ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play. 1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/ board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/ knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be required to leave the playing area for the remainder of that session.
