About the Course INTRODUCTION

This 3.0 credit hour course is being designed as a first ever Experiential Learning (EXL) course in the CIM department at MTSU. The Global Concrete Production and Construction Technologies (CIM 4700) course will be offered in the summer 2016 semester and will be restricted to ten highly qualified students who have achieved a junior standing. Second semester sophomores might also be considered for enrollment in the course. This course will provide the CIM major a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about manufacturing ready-mix concrete in a world class manufacturing plant and then utilizing this manufactured concrete in strengthening, providing corrosion control, and complex concrete repairs on some of the most advanced and challenging construction projects.

In addition to the exposure to world leading ready-mix and concrete repair technologies, the students will get an opportunity to work in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and multi-ethnic environment that is unlike any other place in the world and is not easily replicated in the US. The students will also learn about special climate challenges that have to be overcome when world leading concrete structures are being designed and constructed. They will also learn about the safety practices in this part of the world and take home a very unique set of skills and perspective that will help them throughout their career. Interested students will have to apply to enroll in the course. A faculty/ staff committee will review each application and select the most qualified students to represent the CIM department in UAE and Qatar.

Application Process ƒƒ Students should review the Nine Steps to Studying Abroad by visiting "Getting Started Section" of the OEA website. ƒƒ All students must be preapproved by the MTSU Office of Education Abroad prior to submitting an application to the faculty leader. ƒƒ All interested students are required to complete an online application which will be available starting on August 23, 2015 99 Minimum of 3.0 GPA is required to apply 99 An essay is required stating how this international experience will enhance your professional career 99 A current resume is required to be submitted along with the application 99 Two letters of recommendation are required from a faculty member and an employer ƒƒ A faculty/staff committee will review all applications and select top ten applicants based on GPA, courses completed, and the essay by November 15, 2015 ƒƒ Selected students will be notified by November 20, 2015

PROGRAM COST 99 The total cost of the program for the 10 week stay in the UAE and Qatar is $4194.00. This includes tuition, airfare, housing, food, transportation costs, education abroad fee, and iNext insurance fee payable directly to the Office of Education Abroad. Students are encouraged to have additional funds for sightseeing and shopping.

Program Structure

This course will have with two primary components:

ƒƒ In-class lectures and ƒƒ Study abroad training in Dubai (UAE), Abu Dhabi (UAE), and Doha (Qatar).

In-class lectures The four weeks of classroom lectures will be utilized to prepare the students in the theoretical concepts that will be covered during the practical training portion of the course. Cultural aspects of the UAE will also be covered in the course. The students will be taught to convert unit of measure from US units to International units. During the lecture portion of the course, the students will be engaged in group discussions and case study analysis. They will also be given multiple quizzes and tests to gauge the level of understanding of the subject matter.

Practical Training This intensive 10 week on the job training will consist of working from Sunday through Thursday totaling 50 hours or more per week. The students will work for The Structural Group and Unibeton Ready-mix in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, Qatar. The ten students will be split into two groups of 6 and 4 students each. One group will start out working with Unibeton and the other with The Structural Group. At the end of the fifth week, the groups will switch. The group working for Unibeton, will be further divided into three sub groups of two students each working in Dubai (UAE), Abu Dhabi (UAE), and Doha (Qatar). Each student will be heavily engaged in learning about manufacturing of high strength specialty concrete during the first part of the practical training. During the second part of the practical training, the student will learn how to use this high strength concretes to strengthen structures, provide corrosion control, and repair concrete on high profile mega structures in the UAE and Qatar. Professor Ahmed will accompany the students to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar and supervise all learning activities while in the Middle East. During the practical training portion of the course, the students will be required to keep detailed daily log of activities and a major paper upon the conclusion of the course.
