GRINDERS

APPLICATION Grinders use a horizontally mounted rotating head, fitted with diamond tools to grind the surface. Grinding is used for a variety of applications. The end result is usually to achieve: • A flatter floor- to remove high spots • A cleaner floor- to remove contaminates, glues and coatings • Honing- to remove the top laitance to expose aggregate for an aesthetic finish Different types of applications are: • Removal of coatings and paints • Removal of glues and membranes • Expose aggregate in part of the polishing/honing process • Level uneven surfaces and joints in slabs and footpaths. • Clean up of concrete casting beds • Removal of very thick paints and resins

QUESTIONS Prior to selecting the correct Grinder and Diamond Tooling it is important for our staff to know: • What is on the surface- Glue, Paint, Tile Adhesive. • What finish would you like- Flat, Smooth, Rough. • How many square metres. • What power do you have on site- 240v- 10 or 15amp, 415v- 20 or 32amp. • Location- Inside, Outside, Upstairs, Parking, Access. Not always can all the questions be answered, however, the more information our staff have , the more we’ll be able to assist you in selecting the correct equipment. DUST CONTROL Dust can be a nuisance on site, that’s why all of our equipment is fitted with dust shrouds for the attachment of vacuums. Some of our grinders are fitted with water inlets, but remember this can be very messy and the clean up time can far out way the costs associated with hiring a vacuum. APPLICATION Polishing is a process which uses progressively finer diamond tooling to produce a high sheen finish. This process can be used on natural stone ,concrete or other man made products. The polishing machines are Planetary driven, which have 3 or 6 rotating heads as well as the whole outer head rotating, giving a ‘planetary motion’. This process is ideal for removing scratches and for achieving a flat floor . The type of finish and names for polished concrete vary from company to company. Below are some of the names associated with polished concrete. • Honing or Two Cut & Seal- Process involves grinding to reveal stone then a finer grit to removes scratches. A sealer is then applied. No grouting or polishing takes place. Suitable for outdoors or in wet areas wear grip is required. • Non Exposed – No stone is exposed, only the grey top surface is polished. • Part Exposed or Salt & Pepper- The exposure is inconsistent, with some stone showing and other areas not exposed. Note- This can also be caused by uneven floor surfaces • Fully Exposed Polish- Grinding to reveal the stone , then grouting, polishing and sealing • Hardened Floor Polish- A chemical process which uses a hardener to expand and densify the top surface of the concrete. The floor is then polished to high sheen.

STAGES Depending on the type of finish you prefer (as above), the process typically involves some or all of the below stages: 1. Grinding- to remove the laitance (top layer) and to expose the stone. 2. Grouting- to fill the air pin holes revealed in the concrete, after grinding. 3. Hardening- a specialised process of chemically hardening the surface prior to polishing. 4. Polishing- to remove scratches from the grind and to give surface a sheen 5. Sealing- a coating to protect the surface from staining and marking

APPLICATION Scarifiers have loosely mounted tungsten cutters that are flung outward against the surface and create a very rapid chipping action, which can remove 1 to 6mm of material, depending on the unit and floor. Profilers are more productive, they have fixed tungsten carbide teeth, which mill the concrete at 10 to 30mm per pass. They require hydraulic power from a skid steer (Bobcat) or mini skid steer (Ditch Witch, Dingo or Kanga) Shavers have 60 to 80 diamond blades banked together to form a sold drum of diamond which effectively shaves off the concrete. These units are used to: • Remove high spots and lumps • Remove trips hazards and lippage from footpaths and cycle ways. • Drop overall height off concrete • Remove hard brittle coatings • To remove line marking from roads, highways, asphalt surfaces ,and runways. • Keying concrete in preparation for concrete toppings and screeds • De-scaling steel decks • To regenerate grip and improve safety on walkways, roads and runways.

SHOTBLASTERS

SHOTBLASTING INFORMATION APPLICATION A Shotblaster uses a fast spinning impeller to throw small steel ball bearings (steel shot) at a concrete or steel surface. The shot is propelled at such force, that it removes coatings and contaminates from concrete and steel very effectively, leaving a ‘sand paper’ type finish. Ideal for non slip and keying in for new coatings. The force in which the shot is thrown, in conjunction with the vacuum, is enough to rebound the shot back into the top hopper. Shot re-circulates at approximately 75kg per minute. The shot being heavier is returned to the hopper, while the dust is removed via the Vacuum, attached to the top of the hopper. Shotblasting is effective on: • Removing hard brittle paints, epoxy and membranes • Preparing concrete for new coatings • To remove line marking from roads, highways, asphalt surfaces ,and runways. • To regenerate grip and improve safety on walkways, roads and runways. • Is also very effective descaling mill scale from steel decks on ships and oil platforms

DUST CONTROL Vacuum and or Dust Collectors are required for the shotblasting process to work. The suction from a vacuum aids in the return of the shot after it hits the floor. Correctly matched vacuums will ensure a dust free operation with limited or no mess to clean up. The new coating, paint or membrane can be directly applied after shotblasting. SHOT Steel Shot comes in varying sizes for different applications. The most common is 330, a mid range size for general purpose blasting. The larger the shot the coarser the finish. A steel grit (angular rather than round) is mixed with steel shot at 10-15% for the blasting of steel surfaces. Shot

APPLICATION Mixing of a product can be achieved in many different ways. The material type and specifications will determine the appropriate mixer. Mixers are available in three different types: Ribbon/Spiral Mixer- A spiral which turns within a container creating a vortex which in turn mixes product. Ideal for liquids and less viscous products Forced Action Mixer- three to four vertically mounted arms push through the mix, creating a uniform homogenous mix in a short amount of time. Ideal for stiffer more viscous mixes such as tilers screed, epoxy screeds, high build repair mortars and sports/playground rubber. Drum Mixer- mix products using a folding action which can have long mixing times and are not ideal for engineered products such as grouts and epoxies but are good for brickies mortars and renders

Application- The ride on floor sweeper has two brushes which work together to sweep dust and debris into the bin, whilst and in-built vacuum suppresses dust. After the area is swept the bin is emptied and the dust filters cleaned and the sweeper is underway again.

APPLICATION Vacuums and Dust Collectors can be fitted to most grinding, polishing and cutting equipment. Vacuums tend to be the smaller single phase units and Dust Collectors the larger three phase units. Both work using the same principle, a turbine running at high speed creates vacuum, the air passes through one or two filters preventing dust entering the motors and exiting into the atmosphere. The heavier dust falls down into a bin or plastic bag. It is critical to match the vacuum to the equipment. Too little vacuum will cause dust in the air and in the case of shotblasting will effect the blasting process. Too much vacuum can suck units down onto the ground, making movement of the equipment difficult.

QUESTIONS Things that may effect the performance of a vacuum are hose size, filters, bin size, motor power and general condition of filters and hoses. Prior to selecting the correct Vacuum or Dust Collector it is important for our staff to know: • What the unit is being attached to. • What type of dust the equipment is producing. i.e. fine dust, large granular. • Do you require vacuum attachments, such as floor tools and wands? • Do you require additional plastic bags. • Access and unloading, offloading of equipment • NOTE: Our staff MUST be informed if grinding or removing asbestos based materials. • NOTE: Some vinyls from the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s contained asbestos . Always consult an asbestos professional before removing vinyl Not always can all the questions be answered, however, the more information our staff have , the more we’ll be able to assist you in selecting the correct equipment. ACCESSORIES Depending on the application, accessories such as wands and brushes may be required. When polishing it is important to vacuum the floor between stages to prevent grit scratching the floor. If the vacuum uses a plastic bag system, always ensure you have enough bags for the job.
