LOOKING FOR MOMENTUM

UNLV gets back to Mountain West action this weekend after splitting a two-game, home set with UC Riverside on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Rebel bats came to life in game one, earning the team a 10-1 victory. Game two saw the Highlanders bounce back thanks to a brilliant pitching performance from junior right-hander Mitch Patito. This weekend’s series with San Diego State is especially critical given the Rebels current position in the standings. UNLV enters the weekend tied for fifth with Air Force, looking to build momentum as the Mountain West tournament approaches May 24-27 in Las Vegas. The Falcons will spend the weekend in Lawrence, Kan. for four non-conference games with Missouri State and Kansas, meaning this weekend’s series could provide UNLV with some breathing room in the conference standings. San Diego State and UNLV met for a three-game series in Las Vegas, April 5-7 with the Aztecs earning a three-game sweep. The Rebels thought they had earned a victory in the series Saturday night affair, however, Joey Swanner was called out for leaving third-base early on what would have been the game-winning run in the ninth. SDSU went on to win 6-3 in 11 innings.

The Aztecs enter this weekend having dropped ten of their last 13 games since a series sweep over UNLV in early April. San Diego State dropped two of three at Air Force last weekend including a Sunday game in which the team put up a furious eighth inning comeback but ultimately fell to the Falcons, 10-8. SDSU enters the weekend in third place in the Mountain West standings with a 9-9 conference record. The Aztecs have just two conference series remaining on the season including this weekend’s string of contests with UNLV. San Diego State will conclude its regular season May 18-20 at TCU. The Rebels are in the same boat, having just a threegame set with New Mexico remaining May 11-13. Tim Zier leads the SDSU charge with a .342 (52for-152) batting average. The 5’10 sophomore leads the team in doubles (10), is third in RBI (21), second

UNLV held Zier to a 4-for-17 performance in the two teams first series of the year. Aside from Zier, the Aztecs boast four other players with averages north of .300 in at least 33 games played. Spencer Thornton leads that group with a .327 average to go with 22 RBI. Freshman Ryan Muno isn’t far behind, batting .326 with three homeruns and 21 runs scored. Matt Munoz (.313) and Seby Zavala (.307) round out the quartet with each Aztec having at least 14 RBI and 18 runs scored. Meanwhile, Chris Wilson poses the biggest power threat in the Aztec lineup. The senior native of San Diego has smacked seven homers on the year in addition to his .273 average and team-leading 26 RBI. Wilson’s .500 slugging percentage is also tops on the team for players with at least five games played. Justin Hepner will throw the series-opener on Friday night. The right-hander will make just his second start of the season, eighteenth appearance, and was named last week’s Mountain West Pitcher of the Week. UNLV will be seeing Hepner for the

YARDI BOMB

Junior outfielder Brandon Bayardi enjoyed a solid opening weekend, getting the job done at the plate and in the field for UNLV. The Phoenix native and preseason honorable mention All-American secured a 6-2 win over Loyola Marymount with a home run that easily cleared the blue monster in left at George C. Page Stadium. Two days later, the 2011 First Team AllMountain West selection made a diving catch in left field, robbing the Anteaters of at least two runs and ending their late-inning rally.

SUPER SIX

Six UNLV freshmen started at least one game during the Rebels’ opening weekend games. Zak
