Christ Church Hits the Jackpot!! We are both grateful and delighted that Christ Church has been successful in its Second Round Application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a major grant for its new roofs .This vital work will provide weatherproof roofing for Christ Church for many generations to come and help to secure the Church as both a continuing landmark, here in Malvern, and a special link with the community. The project has already gone through a very thorough Development Stage with HLF and our Church Architect, Nick Joyce. He will supervise all the work and we hope this will start as soon as possible to take advantage of the summer weather. The total cost of the renovation is estimated at £223,000. Our HLF Grant is £158,000. And so, although we have secured our major funding from HLF, our local fund-raising events will continue. We hope the people of Malvern will continue with their generous support of our Roof Appeal. All donations will be

gratefully received and acknowledged by our Treasurer, the Revd Canon Harold Goddard, 1 Springfield House, Como Road, Malvern WR14 2HS -tel. 01684-563350 – email [email protected] Christ Church is a major landmark in Malvern. Its spire is an icon for miles around pointing people to the God who has been worshipped in Christ Church for nearly 140 years. The spire was refurbished in 2007 at a cost of £96,000 helped by a grant from

English Heritage and the generosity of local people. People at Christ Church are deeply moved by the many positive comments of support for all that is going on at Christ Church; at times this is almost overwhelming.

range of concerts. Christ Church will soon have a new demountable stage extension to facilitate its use by larger orchestras and for more drama performances. We are proud of our relationship with our community and local schools and look forward to increasing that even more.

We firmly believe that a Church is not just for Sundays and want to see the people of Malvern in our Church even if it is not on a Sunday for worship each week. So, Christ Church will continue with its many activities and events, bringing a wide range of music to Malvern. We are thrilled to announce that it now has a Grand piano, read more on page 7, greatly enhancing and expanding the

Hill Singers Return To Christ Church Much of the audience said the Gorecki was their favourite and the “Songs from the Shows” And a thank you to Harry for his lovely cakes which were enjoyed by all.

Our most grateful thanks to Carol Green and the Hill Singers for performing at Christ Church on Saturday evening, 18th April . As usual they brought with them their own unique talent as we experienced the swift transition from century to century with their theme of Love and Devotion . The programme ranged from serious to light hearted and pure fun and all interspersed with very appropriate readings.

A most enjoyable evening of entertainment and we hope it won’t be too long before we see them again. Angela Green

Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra At Christ Church We had an absolutely super concert on the evening of 4th July evening, when the Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra performed for the first time at Christ Church. It was lovely to see such a large audience come and support and hear such a vibrant performance from a very accomplished orchestra. It is always exciting to have someone new performing and, on this occasion, it made for a perfect concert for a Summer’s Evening.

The musicians clearly enjoyed it as much as the audience, evident from the rapturous applause, as the carefully chosen programme unfolded, show casing Mozart and Haydn with some beautifully expressive solo performances, culminating in the wonderfully dramatic Beethoven’s 1st Symphony, so full of energy.

5

All conducted by the extremely expert baton of Keith Slade and, refreshingly, equally as enthusiastic as his musicians and audience! We look forward very much to seeing them again . Angela Green

Harold’s Letter Dear friends, The front page article for this issue of Christ Church News tells of our successful bid for a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to help us renew the roofs of Christ Church. We hope and pray that work can begin in August and be finished in time for Christmas. It has been a two-year struggle to get this far, with many hours of computer work and many forms to be filled in on line. Of course there are still many more forms to fill in as the work proceeds! We are all very grateful to Angie Green, our indefatigable churchwarden, for her many hours of hard work in getting us this far. But for now, we are just grateful that our prayers have been answered and God and the HLF have given us this grant. Prayer is at the centre of our Christian life - both as a worshipping community and as individual Christians. Prayer is our method of communicating with God. We pray when we meet together in Christ Church for our services of Holy Communion and our Family Services. We pray to God in our own way as individual Christians. If we don't eat food, we hunger and starve physically - if we don't pray, we hunger and starve spiritually. Many people say that there is a peaceful feeling in Christ Church - I believe that this is because it has been prayed in regularly for nearly 150 years. When we meet holy people we can tell that they are in tune with God.

Canon Harold Goddard Jesus was a worshipping Jew and was brought up to pray every day and especially on the Jewish Sabbath, our Saturday. He lived a life of prayer and He taught His disciples to pray with a new dynamic intensity. In the Lord's Prayer, He started with God and finished with God. "Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name", but the word He used for "Father" was a childish diminutive - "Abba" or "Daddy". We are to pray to a loving Heavenly Father as His beloved children. Gone is the Old Testament image of God as a distant, austere, punishing figure. Now we are to pray to a Father who loves us. Jesus acknowledges that God is Holy. Then He pray for God's Kingdom to come on earth, as it already exists in Heaven, and for people to turn to God and obey God. The Lord's Prayer ends with a great paean of praise to Almighty God.

6

In the middle of the Lord's Prayer, Jesus addresses our basic human needs - food: forgiveness and the grace to forgive others; and protection from temptation and the evil in the world. The Lord's Prayer should be the pattern and the template of our own prayers. acknowledging the holiness, power and love of God and praying for God to transform us into the people He would have us be. Remember our prayers don't change God, they change us and the world in which we live. We need to tune into God in our prayers, just as you need to tune your radio into the station you want to listen to. So the Lord's Prayer is not just a prayer to repeat, but a prayer which transforms our lives. With my prayers and best wishes, Canon Harold Goddard

Christ Church Strikes A Chord! It promised to be wonderful and it didn’t disappoint! On a balmy summer’s evening , accompanied by a very civilised Pimms and lemonade, we heard something new again in Christ Church , as we listened to Harriet Earis and Clovis Williams on Saturday 20th June. What an experience , we were totally enthralled. it was billed as “Celtic harp meets jazz guitar” but it was more a case of they met , married and lived happily ever after! The two instruments just simply flowed , flying from Celtic to Irish to Scottish to ancient hymns and with a lovely informative commentary for the audience it was so vibrant. Showcased perfectly in the lovely surroundings of the Church and its acoustics it made for a hugely enjoyable and intimate experience. The speed with which Harriet’s fingers crossed the strings was phenomenal and they

both so obviously enjoyed it, they positively effervesced with enthusiasm as a member of the audience said We are so fortunate to be able experience such talent in Malvern, Harriet has played at the Royal Albert Hall and O2 Arena in London and Clovis complimented all the pieces with his intuitive playing, we so hope they will return. Our New Associate Priest! We had a truly memorable day on Sunday 3rd May when Canon Harold Goddard officially became Associate Priest at Christ Church. The Bishop of Dudley took the Licensing Service and Archdeacon Robert Jones preached. It was a very personal and moving service as after all these years Harold became the 10th Priest at Christ Church but , amazingly it is his 30th appointment! It was good to have our friends join us and that they were there to support Harold and Christ Church made is all the more special. Following the service Afternoon Tea was served in the Church it was good to catch up with friends old and new and share fellowship. We were especially pleased to meet the new Chaplain of Malvern St James School , Revd, Kim Taplin and thank him and his wife for joining us. We thought it appropriate to think of others in our time of great joy and we raised £250 for the terrible Nepal Disaster. We have much to celebrate and look forward with renewed optimism as we continue our work at Christ Church . Angela Green

Strikes All The Right Notes!!

At Christ Church we are thrilled with our new grand piano...It sounds beautiful, especially when played by the brilliant pianist Tim Sidford at our recent concert. During our roof repairs, we are planning to provide a new demountable stage extension. We will then have platform space for a full orchestra. Christ Church will become an even impressive concert venue right in the heart of Malvern.

Malvern Special Families Malvern Special Families first began in 1988 when a group of parents got together for mutual support & to run some activities for their disabled children, because there were no other services available locally. In 1993 it became a registered charity providing out of school activities for children & young people in the Malvern area. Since then it has grown significantly and we now provide over 8400 hours of short break activities for over 120 disabled children & young people aged 5 – 19yrs in the Malvern & Worcester area. Families can get in touch & access our services directly or they can come referred by a social worker. Our children may go to a special or mainstream school, and we work with those with a variety of very different disabilities. We treat each child as an individual & we work our provision around the child; working very closely with the family and any other professionals involved. If a child needs 1:1 staff support to access our services; then we will provide this. Some of our children may need 2 members of staff to support them & this is not a problem for us. In Malvern we run a monthly Saturday Club at the Poolbrook Centre for children aged 5 – 11yrs from 10.30am – 3pm. Fun activities include sports, trampolining, sensory room, crafts, cooking, music & trips out. We charge our families £5 per child for this Club. We also run a separate Saturday Youth Club for those aged 11 –

19yrs at Malvern Vale Community Centre. Activities include sports, cooking, music, adventure sports & they spend a lot of time going out & about on different activities that the young people themselves like doing. We charge our families £10 per child for this Club. In the holidays we also run Holiday Play schemes at the Poolbrook Centre from 10am – 3pm for both ages’ groups. We charge £20 per day per child. Every Wednesday evening in term time we run 4’s Company Youth Group at Malvern Vale Community Centre from 7 – 9pm. Activities are very much led by the young people themselves & recently have included swimming, First Aid training, bowling & rock climbing. We charge £3 per session. All our sessions are heavily subsidised so that anyone can access our services. We do receive 57% of our funding from Worcestershire County Council but the rest we have to find from other sources. We currently receive 11% from Children In Need alongside having to submit applications to other charitable funding sources. Every year we aim to raise at least 10% from local community fundraising opportunities. The concert at Christ Church helped us well on our way to this. We raised £782.00 on the night & Basepoint Business Centres will match fund this to increase the total raised to £1564.00. We know that our services are much needed by those struggling to manage the demands of caring for a disabled child.

9

Here are a few examples of feedback from a recent online survey: ‘How have our activities made a difference to your family? It takes a lot of pressure off us & allows a bit of time to ‘breathe’. We would struggle if it was not run. I did get a little ‘me’ time & to also spend time with our other daughter Allows me to spend time with my other children & do things with them We get the special time with our other daughter & she gets to be a ‘kid’ rather than being another ‘carer’ for the boys. If the activities didn’t run we wouldn’t get any respite at all & the boy’s social skills would not have improved. Thank you for everything that you all do! It’s well needed respite and I know he’s enjoying himself so don’t feel guilty Without a play scheme our daughter would be bored & make everyone’s lives more hard….. Yes – it gives us a little rest & time to take our other son to activities that we can’t go to Otherwise Thank you for all your support of Malvern Special Families. It is much appreciated. For further details please do not hesitate to contact Maria Munday, Manager on 01684 892526 or email [email protected]. uk

Malvern Special Families Concert Christ Church were delighted to be able to help the Malvern Special Families with their concert on 5th June and even more delighted that they raised £782, however, it doesn’t end there ! Basepoint Business Centres generously agreed to match the amount so in all £1564 was raised for this vital local charity, helping the community here in Malvern. It was lovely to see all who came hear the varied and enjoyable programme from Malvern Male Voice Choir, the choir of Malvern Parish School,

Vox Rox and the Poppy Sisters and very talented soloists, Hayden Phillips, Thea Wilson and Grace Higgins. The hugely talented Tim Sidford accompanied on our wonderful new Grand piano, which had its first official playing! We are thrilled that this is yet another addition to our Church and it will so enhance our musical events and the wider range of music that can be show cased in our lovely surroundings. Angela Green

Our Spring Fair We were so blessed with good weather on Saturday 16th May when we held our annual Spring Fair at Christ Church. Anyone passing by were welcomed by the sounds of the Malvern Chase Brass Band who were able to play on our grass area and truly liven up the occasion, and we are very grateful to them. Our neighbours have said how much they enjoyed listening to the music. The sunshine also meant we could have our plants for sale outside. Meanwhile, inside, visitors were “welcomed” by the aromas of bacon and eggs and sausage breakfast cooking! We had a steady stream of visitors throughout the morning and would like to say thank you for all your support and we hope you enjoyed yourselves. It is so nice when we can sit and chat and share food with friends. We were delighted to raise £650 towards our Roof Fund .

Ride And Stride! On Saturday ,12th September, I will be representing Christ Church in the annual fund raising event for Worcester & Dudley Historic Churches & Buildings Trust . This involves riding (or walking) to a number of Churches in the Malvern area. I shall be participating, with my bike, for the third time and am looking for sponsors to support me at a modest cost. I hope to ride to 20 Churches (not sure which ones yet) – so if you sponsor me for 10p for each Church it would cost you only £2 In total! Last year I raised £200 and half of that money should come back to my nominated Church ….. which is Christ Church . There will be a sign up sheet In Church on which pledges can be made.

On the same day , Christ Church will be open under the Open Church Day and will give us the opportunity to welcome cyclists, walkers & visitors . Again, volunteers are sought to man our Church for this valuable exercise. Many of you will recall that in 2007/2008 we were given financial support by W&DHCBT to repair our spire. SO this will be our chance to show our gratitude by giving towards a vital cause. Thank you in anticipation of your generous support. Please ask me if you have any queries or can help in any way Allan Green

Civic Week At Christ Church Civic Week started at Christ Church on Saturday 11th July with the Civic Gala Concert by the Canzona Children’s Choir and Recorder Quartet, from Mariannske Lazne .They absolutely delighted a full audience with their enchanting performances. Perfectly suited to our acoustics they were so pure and fresh with their wide ranging repertoire. The soloists were quite outstanding and as they sang Do, Re, Mi the ” Sound of Music “was definitely present! From Mozart to Karl Jenkins , their own Czech Folk Songs and even Scarborough Fair they captured the innocence of

Canzona was followed by a spectacular week , beginning with the news of our Heritage Lottery Fund Grant of £158,00 for our new roof. So much to celebrate! And as Civic Week came to a close on Saturday 18th July we reflected on how many visitors have been through our open doors. On Wednesday 15th July 150 children spent the whole day working on a production of Noah and His Floating Ark. They gave a very polished performance at 3.30 p.m. after making the set and practicing their singing all day. It was lovely that they could be joined by Canzona Czech choir again who have been busy singing at venues all around the area all week. The Church was also packed on Friday when Malvern Parish School held their Leaver’s Service. People have been popping in and out to buy books, chat and have a coffee all week. And our Book Fair on Saturday raised £90, which will go to our Roof Appeal.

youth and entertained us. One highlight was the young and extremely gifted Klara Skalkova who played Schumann and the not so well known Burgmuller on our beautiful Grand piano. It was a sheer pleasure to fill the Church with these young voices and players who travelled so far to be with us in Malvern. They had an extremely busy time as they also performed in other Churches around the area and with Bands In the Park . Mention must be made of their wonderfully talented and equally enthusiastic Choirmaster and accompanist Olimpiu Cretan, seen here with the choir.

Tim And Louisa

A very special highlight was the concert on Saturday afternoon – The Boehm Clarinet and Piano Duo. Tim Sidford and Louisa Davidson gave a magnificent performance. It was so wonderful to hear our new Grand piano played so sensitively by Tim and Louisa complimented his playing perfectly. In fact it was a perfect way to spend a summer’s afternoon . People were still commenting on it the next day and we hope that we will hear them again soon at Christ Church. The concert raise £250 towards our Roof Fund, we will get there! Angela Green

Noah And Floating Ark Performance

Our Congratulations To Rachel And Roy , Now Mr & Mrs Castle! It was lovely to hold the wedding of our friends Rachel and Roy on Saturday 26th April . We were a little worried about the weather , but much relieved when the sunshine came out for the arrival of the Bride. Probably nowhere near as relieved as Roy himself as Rachel did exercise the custom of the bride to arrive late. Twenty minutes is a long time when you are the waiting Groom ! By the look of happiness and delight on their faces I think the twenty minutes of angst were quickly forgotten!

The arrival of the magnificent horses and carriage was a wonderful sight and as they “trotted” off to the reception in such style we wished them much happiness in their future life together. Congratulations to you both from your friends at Christ Church. Photos John Jordan,
