Electronics for Young Inventors Level 1 AGES 13 – 16 This two-week, 60-hour summer camp teaches students about electricity, computer programming, and interaction design. Students will discover the science behind everyday electronics, and how energy can be harnessed to process information, control machines and communicate with the outside world. This is a lab-based, hands-on camp where students will learn to understand and safely create fun and creative projects by using an Arduino microcontroller, the C programming language and electronic components. This camp will show students how to build circuits, write computer programs, and craft interfaces to produce amusing, helpful, or just plain crazy inventions! No previous experience with electronics or computer programming is necessary. 10 DAY

* Price includes the Arduino kit distributed the first day of class

Electronics for Young Inventors Level 2 AGES 13 – 16 This two-week, 60-hour summer camp builds on the basics of electricity, computer programming, and interaction design taught in Electronics for Inventors Level 1. Students will apply new computer programming concepts and more complex electrical components to create new interactive projects using an Arduino microcontroller, the C programming language, and electronic components. This camp will also guide students through the necessary steps to safely plan, design, test and produce their own unique electronic inventions. Students entering this course should have some familiarity with the Arduino platform, or other experience with electronics and computer programming. Materials are covered in the course fees. Kids step up their fitness at camp! F

or years, University of Calgary Summer Camps have been touting the benefits of getting kids active at an early age. This past summer, they decided to go the scientific route to really see if they were walking the walk. Armed with Garmin Vivofit™ activity-tracking wristbands, they set out to record the number of steps the campers clocked each day. Groups of children aged 9-14 took turns wearing the trackers for the entire stretch of their 5-day camp, recording how many steps they took during the camp day and in their evening hours. Youth Programs Manager Logan Jones says the camps team was keen to see how their programs shaped up, as the U Calgary Summer Camps strive to provide the highest quality experience backed by scientific evidence. “We try to base our core programming decisions on existing research, but we were unable to find studies that objectively measured step counts during and outside the kids’ day camps,” said Jones. Gathering their own data was a natural next step for the U of C Camps, according to Jones, given the expertise and rich knowledge resources located right on campus. “We reached out to Dr. Tish Doyle-Baker of the Kinesiology faculty to help steer us in the right direction,” said Jones. “Under her guidance, we collected data from nearly 200 campers.” According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation Walk About website, a healthy benchmark for children aged 8-10 is about 12,000-16,000 steps a day, while youth should try to hit 11,000-12,000. Jones and the staff at U Calgary Summer Camps were pleased to see their 2015 programs hit those targets and more. “Every camp we ran last summer at the university broke (on average) 12,000 steps a day, even those you may expect to be less active like science and engineering camps,” said Jones. Some camps blew those numbers out of the water. Dinos U12/U14 boys were the standout group with an average of more than 22,000 steps a day, with Mini University’s Mini Sport Grades 6-8 right behind at 21,000. Mini U’s Kreative Kids Grade 5 campers followed next at

18,000 steps a day, on average. These totals included all steps taken during the 24-hour day — at camp or elsewhere. Dr. Doyle-Baker said getting involved with this research holds genuine value for the U of C Summer Camps. “This research demonstrates both best practices and highlights evidence that U of C camps are doing what they should be doing in terms of meeting the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines,” she said. She added that it was key they measure the steps with an accelerometer as opposed to a simple pedometer. “In these camps, kids are jumping, rolling, ducking, swimming, and moving around in a variety of ways. We wanted to capture those movements as best we could, and a simple step-counting pedometer wasn’t going to cut it,” she said. Most of the published research in this area has been completed with pedometers, so these camps may have data that is the first to use accelerometers, said Dr. DoyleBaker. The Garmin Vivofits™ are also waterproof, a bonus when working with kids who swim during their camps. Dr. Doyle-Baker was also involved in organizing Human Performance Lab tours to teach campers about the science of nutrition and exercise. She started off by asking the kids how many calories they thought were in a Halloween-sized (18g) mini Mars bar. “After they tried to guess, we explained that one contained about 84 calories,” she said. To help the kids understand what those calories mean, “the groups, then had to perform enough jumping jacks or pushups (five kids doing activity for 60 seconds) to burn off those calories. It really resonated with them.” The University of Calgary plans to conduct a full step-counting research study throughout the 2016 Summer Camps. Register today for the chance for your child to be part of this exciting scientific research!

Video gamers get active In a time when video games seem to steal more kids’ attention away from being active, Mini University decided to offer the best of both worlds in a new camp last year. Active Gamers integrated the exciting movement gaming technology of Xbox One Kinect and Wii U with more traditional summer camp activities such as swimming, sports and team games. The result was a definite 1-Up with campers, says Mini University Program Coordinator Evan Smibert. “We wanted to pull in those kids that would rather play video games all summer and show them physical activity can be fun and not just a chore,” said Smibert. It didn’t take long before those same kids were jumping out of their comfort zone, joining in all the activities with plenty of energy. “It actually surprised me how into the dancing games the boys got,” said Smibert. Then they went from dancing video games, to dance class and even yoga and Pilates. “These kids got to try so many things they probably never would have,” added Smibert. “When we brought in the dance instructor, she got them all to put on crazy hats and they got silly, dancing around. It’s a far cry from staring at a TV all summer.” Campers dove into the other side of video games when they got their hands on iPads equipped with game-building apps. Drag-and-drop formats let the kids build levels the other kids could then try out. Smibert says it was impressive how quickly the kids picked up how to build their own games. “The campers were whiz kids at this stuff; they could make a playable level in an hour, some even faster than that,” he said. “It’s exciting to put the technology in their hands and see what they come up with.” With a successful summer under their belt, Smibert says Mini University is exploring ways to download even more fun into the 2016 season. “We think it would be fun to take the kids somewhere fun and game-themed, maybe on a field trip to play a round of laser tag with the group,” he said.
