Contractors Overview Busby Contracting is an energetic local Rockhampton based civil contracting firm with over 70 years of combined civil experience behind it. Managed by Patrick Busby, Kevin Surman and Don Stephen, the company has undertaken projects in a number of Central Queensland mines including Eagle Downs, Daunia, Baralaba, Isacc Plains, Caval Ridge, South Walker Creek, Rolleston, Minerva, Ensham, Gregory, Crinum, Peak Downs, Broadmeadows, North Moranbah, Dawson, Curragh, Kestrel, Hail Creek, Coppabella, Jellinbah, Blackwater, Moorvale, Dyno Nobel Ammonia Nitrate Plant. We also have a director based in Moranbah.

Busby Contracting undertakes a wide range of civil works, including structural concrete, drainage, project management and construction. To date, although the company is still growing, a lot has been achieved. Some of these achievements include various projects from building roads, bridges, culverts and other drainage structures, structural concrete work; to earthworks, subdivision construction and the project management of civil and mining operations. The combined experience of the company directors applying hands-on guidance to the range of jobs undertaken, means that projects are completed efficiently and effectively.

The Local Owners Patrick Busby Patrick completed his Civil Engineering degree while working for Golding Contractors & QMAG. Patrick also worked for the Rockhampton City Council as a Works Engineer. While in these positions, Patrick had extensive experience in a wide range of engineering specialisations, including Mine Rehabilitation, duplication of the Railway lines for Queensland Rail, construction of dams and tailings dams, construction of a flying fox for Ensham Mine, levee banks, fuel facilities and workshops. Additionally, Patrick has experience in managing the mining of phosphate, project management on numerous sites, quality assurance, workplace health and safety, and tendering processes. After 12 years in the employ of others, Patrick branched out on his own with the purchase of a business with his brother Ray. Patrick then started Busby Contractors with Don and Kevin and began managing projects throughout Central Queensland.

Don Stephen With 35 years contracting experience in the Construction and Mining Industry Don has a wealth of multi-discipline contracting experience in both contract mining and civil projects. Past roles have included Surveyor, Estimator, Project Manager, Construction Manager and Operations Manager. As Mining Manager for a number of major contractors Don has gained much experience in the mining industry ranging from streamlining mining operations, infrastructure and portal installations to providing a quality service to Clients.

Kevin Surman Kevin's professional career started in surveying; commencing as a cadet surveyor and subsequently as an engineering surveyor in Brisbane. He then took on a position as engineering surveyor with a major Central Queensland Civil Contracting Company for 7 years before taking on the role of Project Manager with them for a further 12 years. Kevin has since worked with Tambo and Bulloo Shire Councils, the Rockhampton City Council, and Golding Contractors. Kevin has a wealth of experience in all aspects of civil engineering ranging from earthwork foundations, mine management, construction of culverts, golf courses, haul roads, and subdivisions, earth dams and levee banks to name but a few examples.

Kestrel Mine Extension, Establish New Underground Mine Portals, Dams & Roads (August 08)

Description of Works Project Management Services for BGC at Kestrel Mine Extension. Works included excavation, installation of two portal structures and backfill, access roads, dams and services. Continued on site with labour hire for BGC, Redpath, Armflame and ASD Vent Installations.

Crinum Mine, Crinum East Overland Conveyor (August 07 – February 08) Description of Works The basic scope of work required to successfully complete the Crinum East Overland Conveyor included the construction of concrete footings and slabs for all overland conveyor structures and associated earthworks. Several of these structures were

specialized areas of the conveyor and included structures such as; Breaker Station footings & slabs; Tripper Station footings & slabs; Transfer Station footings & slabs; Head End footings & slabs; Drive Frame footings & slabs; Gantry Support Column (approx. 20m high); and Transformer & Substation footings & slabs for all electrical works. Further to this all concrete works for the Gregory Mine Tunnel Extension footings, slabs, an 8m high headwall & wingwalls of the same height were completed. Earthworks including excavation & backfill of all structures were also completed. Approx. 3000m3 of concrete was used on this project. Status Contract to Gregory / Crinum Mine, BMA

Wesfarmers, Curragh Mine, (April 07 – Present) Description of Works This work included the construction of a 6 km access road and involved earthworks & drainage structures. Drainage structures completed included 12 pipe culvert including concrete headwalls & wing-walls. Also included were 500 lineal metres of Armco guard. Other miscellaneous works included construction of concrete footings for lighting towers, footings for new coal sampling stations and footings for a dragline shutdown pad. Status Sub-contract & Project Managed

Clarke Energy, Moranbah North (Anglo Coal), (October 07) Description of Works This work involved the full civil construction of a 45 megawatt seam gas power station. Works included cut to fill & imported fill for the road construction and pavement. Other works were 2 x dam constructions including HDPE Liner, drainage structures and gully pits, sediment traps, pump out pits, spoon drains, Concrete Slabs for Power Station – Clarke Energy, Moranbah

sediment ponds and underground drainage. Concrete structures included 15 engine bases; a 250 m2 gas conditioning pad; various pedestals/plinths; bulk oil pads and transformer pads; and full workshop construction including all electrical & plumbing works. Also included were 900 lineal metres of security fencing & Armco rail. Approximately 1000m3 of concrete was used on this job. Status Contract to Clarke Energy

BMA, Gregory / Crinum Mine, (July 07 – September 07) Description of Works This work involved the construction of concrete footings and wing walls for box culvert sections as a part of the Crinum East Overland Conveyor Project. Approximately 1000m3 of concrete was used to complete the two culverts constructed. Status Subcontract to MCG Civil, Brisbane

Dawson Mine, Moura (August 2005 – April 2007) Description of Works Involved in the Dawson Mine Project, these works included the Project Management, construction of three Dump Station Reinforced Walls and associated primary and secondary sizer footings and concrete slabs. Further to this Busby Contractors provided Project Management Services, culvert and drainage construction, structural concrete works - including conveyer road underpass, bridging over failing culverts and bored piers. BMA, Gregory Mine, (March 06 – September 06) Description of Works This job involved the construction of concrete footings, pedestals and drainage for an extension of the existing wash plant at Gregory Mine. Also completed were concrete works for the Gantry Support Column, which is a part of the Crinum Overland Conveyor project. Status Subcontract to MKG, Brisbane

Ensham Mine, (August 06 - December 06) Description of Works This work included importing a 1m thick rock fill directly from the mine open cut utilising 150T trucks, D11 dozers and 825 compactor to cart, dump, and grade the base fill of some 40,000m3. Pavement material up to CBR60 in the order of 6,000m3 was then imported and trimmed to form the working surface on the dragline erection pad measuring 225m by 175m. A 26m diameter concrete slab was then constructed for the dragline to be built on. Along with underground services, water, workshop slabs and footpaths the work was completed in a safe and efficient manner to enable access on schedule. Status Principal contractor
