A 00 Le Corbusier

Hauptwerke

Jahrhunderts). Sonia Ricon Baldessani: Wie Frauen bauen. A 04 João Batista Vilanova Artigas

João Batista Vilanova Artigas (June 23, 1915 – January 12, 1985) was one of the most important Brazilian modernist architects. Born in Curitiba and much-awarded in his lifetime, Artigas is considered one of the most important names in the architectural history of São Paulo, and the founding figure of the Paulista School.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Jo%C3%A3o_Batista_Vilanova_Artigas Life Artigas attended the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo and after his graduation in 1937, he worked with RussianBrazilian architect Gregori Warchavchik on the remodeling of Praça da República. From 1941 through 1947 he served as professor of aesthetics, architecture and planning, and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1946. Along with Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Artigas's membership in the Brazilian Communist Party resulted in his removal from his teaching position in 1969. Both were reinstated in the 1980s.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulista_School The Paulista School (Escola Paulista, São Paulo School) was an informal group of Brazilian architects who formed in the 1950s. As opposed to the smoother curvy surfaces of the Rio (Carioca) School typified by Oscar Niemeyer, the Paulista work embraced exposed concrete structures, chunkier massing, and rougher finishes. The two primary figures associated with the Paulista School are the Pritzker Prize-winner Paulo Mendes da Rocha and João Batista Vilanova Artigas; other figures include Joaquim Guedes and Oswaldo Bratke.

Artigas' work is common viewed in three phases. The first phrase, from 1937 through about 1945, shows an obvious influence from Frank Lloyd Wright in residential design; from 1945 through the mid-1950s there's a transitional phase adopting an International Style grammar (curtain walls, pilotis) for larger projects; and from the 1960s and 1970s his personal, dramatic style linked to Brutalism for large-scale public buildings. Artigas was one of the main figures of the Paulista School of the 1950s, characterized by expressed reinforced concrete structure. Significant work Benedito Levi House, São Paulo, 1945 Artigas House, São Paulo, 1948–1949 Louveira Residential Complex, São Paulo, 1946–1949 Bus Station (now Art Museum), Londrina, 1951 Estádio do Morumbi, São Paulo, 1952–1960 Professor Jon Teodoresco State School, Itanhaém, 1960– 1961 Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning (FAU) Center at University São Paulo, 1969

A 05 Joaquim Guedes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joaquim_Guedes

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joaquim_Guedes

Joaquim Manoel Guedes Sobrinho; São Paulo, June 18, 1932 – São Paulo, July 27, 2008) was a Brazilian architect and urban planner.

Joaquim Manoel Guedes Sobrinho (* 1932 in São Paulo; † 27. Juli 2008) war ein brasilianischer Architekt.

Praised as one of the most important architects of his generation, he was known for rejecting formalism in favor of an architecture that responds to the needs of everyday life. Although usually associated with the Paulista School, Guedes was a critic of Oscar Niemeyer and mainstream Brazilian architecture and thus considered an 'enfant terrible' among many of his colleagues. He inaugurated his practiced in São Paulo in 1955 and worked on over 400 projects. He is best known for his single family houses and urban projects, among them the new town of Caraíba in the State of Bahia, Brazil.

Bibliography

www.hart-brasilientexte.de Joaquim Guedes in Sao Paulo. ” http://www.hart-brasilientexte.de/2010/04/16/kreuz-und-gedenksteinam-ort-des-massakers-an-bauarbeitern-brasilias-oscar-niemeyer-derdie-errichtung-brasilias-leitete-sagt-im-dokumentarfilm-von-demblutbad-nie-etwas-gehort-zu-haben/

A 08 Gregori Warchavchik http://deu.archinform.net/arch/835.htm

Gregori I. Warchavchik (* 2. April 1896 in Odessa; † 27.

A 09 Burle Marx

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Burle_Marx

Roberto Burle Marx (* 4. August 1909 in São Paulo; † 4.

A 10 Lucio Costa Lúcio Costa (* 27. Februar 1902 in Toulon; † 13.

A 12 Hans Scharoun Hans Scharoun (* 20. September 1893 in Bremen; † 25.

GPA&A Gustavo Penna graduated in 1973 from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), where he studied with renowned professors Humberto Serpa, Rafael Hardy and Cuno Maurício Lussy, and where he later taught for three decades. In 1974, Penna founded the architecture office that still occupies the same centennial, eclectic-style house that once belonged to his grandparents, on Álvares Cabral Av., downtown Belo Horizonte. In that inspiring building, a team of 30 professionals think, design and build under the assurance that architecture is key to shaping the identity of a country. GPA&A's projects present, upon modernist and baroque heritages, a look that is sensitive to architecture’s contemporary issues. They particularly stand out for the subtlety of their shapes and volumes, the gentle dialogue with the landscape, and the comfort and functionality of the indoor spaces. Some of them, such as the Guignard School considered by Projeto magazine one of the 30 most relevant architectural works in Brazil - , won architecture awards, were exhibited in Brazil and abroad, and were featured in both Brazilian and foreign books and magazines. Bringing together architectural excellence and good management practices, the office works in major and medium projects, and operates in partnership with other domestic and foreign offices, such as Richard Meier & Partners Architects a Pritzker Prize winner from the USA, and Gerkan, Marg und Partner (GMP), from Germany. GPA&A's projects can also be seen on the most important international websites, such as Urbarama and Contemporist. Av. A 00 DOMO, Brasilia www.domo.arq.br/eng DOMO Arquitetos Associados is an architectural practice founded in Brasília in 2008 and directed by the architects Daniel Mangabeira, Henrique Coutinho and Matheus Seco. We work in projects with different scales, from big architectural schemes to small interventions and interior design. We wish to create projects that are inspiring to people and that can interact positively with the city. Our office works as a collaborative space. We organize ourselves in different groups for each project as to incorporate different talents, interests and ideas to the creation and development processes. For us every project should express the specific characteristics of its program, client and context, without following styles or pre-defined models. We are interested in the debate about temporality, materiality and permanence of the building and its relationship with our architectural heritage.

Son of Japanese artist Tomie Ohtake, Ruy Ohtake is known for his dynamic and unusual architectural designs. Some fine examples of his projects are the half-moonshaped Hotel Unique[1] (considered by architecture pundit Paul Goldberger one of the seven wonders of the modern world), the Hotel Renaissance building, and commercial building Edifício Santa Catarina at Avenida Paulista - all three located in the city of São Paulo. Ohtake is also famous for the design of the Thomie Ohtake Cultural Institute[2] and the commercial building next to it. A 00 MMBB

Fernando de Mello Franco, Marta Moreira and Milton Braga form MMBB - one of Brazil's most energetic and multi-faceted architectural practices with work spanning from large urban planning and regeneration schemes to private houses. Regular collaborators with Pritzker Prize winner and member of Wallpaper*'s advisory panel, Paulo Mendes de Rocha, MMBB combine practice with academia and have currently a range of projects on the drawing boards. What defines Brazilian architecture and culture? What is special is the way the Brazilians operate with the culture as a whole, even though each area has its own characteristics and interpretations of what Brazilian culture is. We also solve problems creatively. Everything could be a solution for a problem; we fix things with what we have available. This shows the power of our culture and Lina Bo Bardi used this all the time. That is, the way we mix the technical global standards with local culture. It is not local and not global, it is the friction in-between. Do you think there are many architects today who work like this? No, I don't. How does Brazil's strong Modernist legacy affect and influence contemporary architecture in the country? Well, Oscar Niemeyer is still alive so the movement is still alive in a way. But Wallpaper* is here and so many other people from all over the world, like you, think that Brazil is in a special moment of change. And for sure it is. Do you agree with that? I do agree. Sao Paulo, for example, was formed as a modern industrial city but now something new is going to emerge. I don't know what it is going to be, but it is not exactly the continuation of the Modern movement. We are not turning our back to it, of course. Things are just changing right now. Paulo Mendes da Rocha for example is really clever and is conscious of that. He says he hates to see young people doing what he had done 50 years ago. It has no meaning now.

Is Brazil and Brazilian construction mainly supported by governmental or private funds, Brazilian or foreign? We certainly have both, but there is lots of Brazilian money for sure. We have mines and oil, so many good resources. But when you talk about Brazilian architecture, you will notice that all the big projects are somehow connected with a special political moment. For example, the Ministry of Education by Le Corbusier and others happened at such a moment. During the 1950s, the best of Niemeyer and Lina Bo Bardi's first works were connected with the economical development Brazil had after the Second World War. The bossa nova, cinema nuovo and so on were all expressions of that moment. I believe that Brazil is changing at the moment so we can expect something new soon. Do you feel the state is encouraging a change? You may find one person here and one there - maybe one per state - but it is definitely not a movement yet.

A 00 Triptyque http://triptyqueblog.blogspot.com.br/ http://triptyqueblog.blogspot.com.br/p/triptyque.html Triptyque at Inhotim.

Triptyque is a French-Brazilian Architecture firm founded by Grégory Bousquet, Carolina Bueno, Guillaume Sibaud and Olivier Raffaelli, who all graduated from the Ecole d’Architecture de Paris-La-Seine, in France. In São Paulo since the year 2000, the firm has also been based in Paris since 2008. Triptyque faces the problematics of emerging cities, and the urge to develop a method and tools questioning and/or modifying the evolution of urban spaces and modern construction. Triptyque’s etymology refers to the three panels’ work of art that gave plurality in the points of view, which, by that time, was innovative. The firm’s work as well is a hybridisation of many characters and disciplines that translates a constant search to surpass commonly accepted repertoires and to integrate the new deal on social and environmental responsibility. Triptyque stood out with projects such as Harmonia 57 and Colombia 325, in Brazil. The firm’s work were presented in 2008 in Venice for the Architecture Biennale, within the “Optimiste” exhibition at the French Pavilion; and in 2010, for the AFEX prize exhibition. The firm was also invited to the Hong Kong/Shenzen’s Biennale in 2009, with “Creatures”; to the Guggenheim Museum of New York in 2010 within the exhibition called “Contemplating the Void”; and last but not least, in London for the London Festival of Architecture of 2010, with “Swarming Futures” and to the “1:1” exhibition at the V&A Museum.

The Cultural Institute o Inhotim, based in Minas Gerais (Brazil) is one of the new places devoted to contemporary art. Triptyque concieved four spaces for there: « Oca », « Cube » and « Omelete » and « Tree Walk » and an Exhibition Hall, bouth located in strategic places of the Institute. The south american writers Jorge Luis Borges, Gael Garcia and the « Fantastic Realism » were « visited » for the concept formulation of these projects, for proposing a sensorial experience between the natural and the artificial.

Marcel Gautherot (Paris, 1910-Rio de Janeiro, 1996) The objectivity and clarity of Marcel Gautherot's photographs of Brasília, combined to the remarkable presence of thick shadows and sharp perspectives, bring them close, from a formal point of view, to the early works of the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico. The article measures up Gautherot's artistic perspective against the intentions of architects Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer and the literary and critical interpretations that describe the city as a "methaphysical" and "surrealist" landscape. http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?pid=S010133002012000200010&script=sci_arttext

U 00 Universitäten Belo 3 Centro Universitário Izabela Hendrix, Belo Horizonte, http://www.izabelahendrix.edu.br/ The Izabela Hendrix Methodist Institute was founded in 1904 by the North-American Methodist missionary Martha Watts. At first it was only the school for women's education, the first in Minas Gerais State to recognize their rights and understand the importance of women in the society. With over a century of existence, The Izabela Hendrix Methodist Institute has a history that mixes itself with Belo Horizonte city trajectory. This capital of Minas Gerais State is 110 years old and shows in its traits and its people the sophistication and boldness of one who seeks the new without forgetting its roots. The institution which is part of the net of more than 700 universities, colleges and schools in all continents adopts this style: it values its memory, but it is original and projects the future in every moment. Today The Izabela Hendrix Methodist Institute is a school and university center that has two campuses and carries on believing in the transforming power of the high quality education. With a modern and intelligent structure, high level teachers and an enterprising role in the educational scenery, oriented by the principles of a more just and equal society, The Izabela Hendrix is walking towards becoming a university. But structures and directress do not represent anything if they do not produce ideas and innovative solutions. For this, more than 4.000 people give their lives to The Izabela Hendrix. They are students, teachers and workers who, together with the community, use laboratories, libraries, clinics, auditoriums, sport center, chapel, classrooms and conviviality spaces that improve our society. In the Methodist tradition, the schools are not only a place to learn but also a place to live at. Besides the facilities mentioned, The Izabela Hendrix Methodist Institute has a theater with 400 seats equipped with a structure to hold cultural and academic events. Since 2007, it has an ample library, another pioneer project that reaffirms the ideals of this house where it is always time to learn to live, where tradition is the strong basis and innovation is the path to be walked. To form socially responsible leaderships has been and will always be the methodology of this school. Izabela Hendrix is an institution that offers more than a qualified staff. It educates active and aware youth who mark the society as competent and ethic professionals.

In 1916, architect Christiano Stockler das Neves proposed to the board of Mackenzie College his ideas for the creation of an Architecture Course, in the molds of the Architecture College, University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated. The course was organized after its approval and inaugurated in 1917, in the School of Engineering. One can read about his ideas for the Architecture Course in "Plano de Estudos Mínimos do Architecto nas Universidades da América" (Plan for a Minimum Curriculum for Architectural Education in America's Universities), presented in 1927, in the III Panamerican Congress of Architects, Buenos Ayres. According to his ideas, an architect graduated under such curriculum should be able to practice in any american country.

Until 1946, the course graduated 85 engineers-architects and, while Mackenzie was vinculated to the University of New York, the student received two diplomas, one from Mackenzie and the other from NYU. In 1947, the School of Architecture (Faculdade de Arquitetura do Instituto Mackenzie), was founded, split from the Engineering School, in August 12th, as the first School of Architecture in the State of São Paulo. Professor Christiano Stockler das Neves, head of the Architecture Course from 1917 up to its emancipation, was ellected its first Dean, post which he kept until his retirement, in 1956.
