The Way We Were Car Show

Thursday, August 6, 66-8 pm Wiswall Park, Front Street Music by Union Fire Company Band

Mark your calendars! The 13th Annual “The Way We Were” Car Show, presented by the Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association and the Saratoga Automobile Museum, will take place Sunday, October 11 (rain date October 18) on Front Street in downtown Ballston Spa. Last year, we had over 500 cars lined up the entire length of Front Street and beyond and we’re looking forward to another great show for 2015. Pre-Registration, sponsorship, and vendor information will be available soon. Stay tuned!

practice previously learned reading skills; to provide opportunities for learning through peer interactions and physical activities; and to foster confidence and a positive attitude about the coming school year. For more information, contact Melanie Combs at 605-7396—or pick up an application at the BSBPA table at the Farmer’s Market! Thank you to Eagle Matt Lee Fire Company volunteers for building the great new planters in Kelley Park. From Community Emergency Corps-Summer rolls on and with it the usual issues people have with the extra hot weather. We hope everyone, especially the very young and elderly, take the precautions needed this time of year like staying hydrated, staying in air-conditioning whenever possible, and wearing sunscreen to protect your skin. And don't forget, never leave your kids or pets in your car in this weather. You're just asking for trouble if you do. We spent a very busy week up at the Fair, as usual, and still were able to spend some time doing demos at the Town of Milton Day Camp and taking part in the Ballston Library's "Party for Heroes" celebration. Thanks to all the kids for making it a fun time

The Ballston Spa Rotary hopes you had a chance to visit their booth at the Fair. Members of the club were soliciting donations for their Shelter Box program. Shelter Boxes are packs that are sent all over the world during times of disasters and include a tent, heating & cook stove, water purification, and other essential items to support a family of 6 during their time of need. The Oklahoma tornados, earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal, and the Japanese Tsunami are just some examples of where these life saving units were sent when needed. They will continue this fundraising at other events this year, like the Double M Rodeo in August, The "Way We Were" Car Show, Haunted Hayrides, or anywhere they can ask people for their spare change. The JRM Artists’ Space at The National Bottle Museum, Ballston Spa’s premiere art gallery, is proud to present “Oakroom Artists 2015”, an exhibition by 20 members of the Schenectady based Oakroom Artists. This will be the first major show in the newly remodeled Artists’ Space gallery on the second floor of the museum. This show will be on display throughout the Saratoga race season, through September 18. All sales of art during this show directly benefit the ongoing mission of the National Bottle Museum.

Member Items Women in Business Committee members of The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County will gather on August 18 for the 8th year in a row to assemble new backpacks filled with school supplies to benefit Wellspring (formerly Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services of Saratoga). With the help of generosity of chamber members as well as many local community members, the committee hopes to donate over 100 new backpacks filled with school supplies. Backpacks of Hope is part of the committee’s charitable initiative Baskets of Hope, which benefits families who seek the assistance and refuge Wellspring provides them. New backpacks and school supplies can be dropped off at the chamber office until August 16. Donations for women’s personal care items are accepted year round at The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County office, now located at 58 Clifton Country Road in Clifton Park. For further information on The Backpacks of Hope program, contact Chamber Member Services Manager Liz Roggenbuck at 518371-7748. More information about the chamber is available through www.southernsaratoga.org . Best wishes to Haley Curtiss, daughter of Make Me Fabulous owner Alayne Curtiss as she competes in the USA National Miss Scholarship Pageant at Disney World July 27- August 1. Haley is Miss Northeastern States in the Jr. Teen division. The USA National Miss Scholarship Organization is a national scholarship program that recognizes the personal achievement, community involvement and academic excellence of young women all across the USA. A Healing Art Sanctuary, 154 Milton Avenue, will be holding a Tai Chi

Workshop with Mark Tolstrup, director of The Tai Chi Center in Saratoga, on Saturday, August 15 at 1:30 pm. This workshop will introduce the 10 basic Tai Chi Qi Gong exercises that increase flexibility, reduce stress and benefit overall health. For more information and to RSVP, call 518 530 -2122 or email a [email protected].

Thanks to Pete Bardunias and the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, for not only featuring our materials and Ballston Spa map guides at their booth at the Saratoga County Fair, but also for promoting the BSBPA and other local BPAs with logos on its banner. The CSSC is a great partner and does great work for Saratoga County businesses and organizations. Thanks also to Spa City Farmers' Market for sharing their attractive display space at the Fair with our Ballston Spa Market. Both markets support local farmer/ producers. It is with sadness that we note the passing on July 28, of a vital member of our community, Kathy Jarvis (pictured, left, with

former BSBPA board member Ellie Dillon). Kathy not only was a past BSBPA board member and president, but also past Ballston Spa School Board president, as well as an active volunteer. Among other things, Kathy helped organize the original downtown Village Garage Sale and the downtown window painting at Halloween. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her husband Rick and daughters Samantha and Alexandra.

We're sure you've noticed the great outdoor eating space in front of Next Door Kitchen & Bar, just in time for the summer season. We want to take this opportunity to recognize building owner Spencer Tacy for making the important sidewalk improvements and Next Door owners Matt Hall and Chris Fignar for the tasteful way they set up the outdoor space, and also for weeding and planting around not only the tree in front of their business but also those in front of the adjacent building as well. In fact, several businesses take care of planting and/or weeding around trees in front of their places (Coffee Planet, Iron Roost, Front Street Home, O'Brien Pharmacy, to name a few). We are fortunate to have great BSBPA member businesses who work to make our downtown attractive. Thank you!

BSBPA Members: Do you have upcoming events or news that you would like to share in our next issue? Contact Ellen Mottola, [email protected], 885-2772 (phone or fax) or mail to BSBPA, PO Box 386, Ballston Spa, NY 12020. The deadline for the September 2015 issue is August 27, 2015. Promptness is always appreciated, questions answered with a smile! Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association

Association News The New York Times Discovers the Charm of B. Spa Ballston Spa, a half-hour north of Albany, is upstate New York’s other “spa town” and these days it’s booming. The village has its mineral springs, but also young artisans, entrepreneurs and ex-“Skiddies” (Skidmore graduates) who have decamped here after being priced out of nearby Saratoga Springs. Its Victorian-era downtown is enjoying a revival with some of the best antiquing around. Quirky boutiques, upscale bars, cafes and even a tastefully restored inn and spa, the Medbery, have also cropped up. For visitors eager to soak up a spa experience, find antiques or play the ponies, Ballston Spa is increasingly seen as a less pricey alternaPhoto credit: Tony Cenicola/ New York Times tive to Saratoga Springs. Thus says “Where to Go in Ballston Spa, NY” by Lionel Beehner in the July 27, 2015 Travel section of The New York Times, which goes on to highlight local businesses, including BSBPA members Ye Olde Wishin' Shoppe, Next Door Kitchen & Bar, Zest and Iron Roost (with a mention to Medbery Inn & Spa). We hope it puts a little spring in your step, as it did ours—we are so proud of our small businesses and everyone who has been a part of Ballston Spa's renaissance!
