Introduction Welcome to the Aromatherapy Recipes and Tips Series! As promised, here are all the recipes and tips you’ve received by email over the past 3 months compiled into a PDF for you to easily access. Similar to the emails, I’ll give you links to ingredients and supplies in this PDF when it isn’t immediately obvious where to get them. (To make sure the links work, it’s best to view this PDF in Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. If you don’t have either of these programs, you can download Adobe Reader for free by visiting http://get.adobe.com/reader and clicking the yellow “Download” button.) These are recipes I’ve been using in my own life and sharing with friends for many years. I hope you love them as much as I do! Enjoy! Andrea Butje [email protected] www.aromahead.com

Aloe Avocado Face Wash • • • •

1.5 oz (45 ml) aloe vera gel .5 oz (15 ml) avocado oil 4 drops Frankincense essential oil (Boswellia carterii) 2 oz flip top PET plastic bottle (also called disc top)

Simply put a little of the cleanser on a cotton round and use it to wash your face, the same way you would soap. Rinse with warm water when you’re done. What’s so great about this cleanser? 1. It’s very gentle on your skin. 2. It’s the perfect substitute for soap, especially if you have skin issues. 3. All three ingredients are healing for your skin.

Blending by Aroma On Aromatics International’s site, there’s a tool that lets you Shop by Aroma. Go to AromaticsInternational.com and use the picture below to locate the “aroma” tab.

Once you’re on the Shop by Aroma page, scroll down and read the descriptions of each aroma. Put a checkmark next to one or two that appeal to you and click “view oils.” This is a great way to get to know the oils and learn about those you aren’t familiar with. It’s also a wonderful blending tool to help you choose oils for a specific purpose. For example, if I want oils that are earthy and grounding to help balance a crazy busy day, I might choose “Balsamic” and “Piney.” (Try it and see what comes up. What a gorgeous group of oils!) Just so you know, some combinations don’t produce any results. If this happens, just go back, reduce your search, and try again.

Mouth Spa Three great tips for taking care of your teeth! 1. Put one drop of Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) on your toothbrush after brushing your teeth at night. Tea Tree is antimicrobial and will work hard to keep your toothbrush clean by reducing microbes. 2. Use Helichrysum hydrosol for your mouthwash. After I brush my teeth, I add a capful of the hydrosol into a small glass of water and rinse my mouth. If you don’t like the taste of Helichrysum hydrosol, mix it with some Peppermint hydrosol (½ capful of each). That freshens it right up! 3. Make your own toothpaste. Simply mix ½ coconut oil and ½ baking soda in glass jar and dab a little of the mix on your toothbrush. For extra freshness, you can add one drop of Peppermint and one drop of Tea Tree essential oil to 1 oz of the coconut/baking soda mix.

5

Wake Me Up! Morning Shower After you get the hot water going, place 1 drop each of the following oils on the shower floor, in front of where you stand. The combination of the steam and the essential oil is invigorating and revitalizing! Wake Me Up! Orange (Citrus sinensis) White Spruce (Picea glauca) Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) Of course, you can try any essential oil you love. Just add 1-3 drops total of essential oil to the shower floor and enjoy the aroma!

Cleaning Wooden Cutting Boards The only ingredients you need to clean your cutting boards are salt and citrus. You can use the peel from a lemon or grapefruit, or you can use the essential oil (or both!). Lemon or Grapefruit Peel Approach Cut the citrus in half and remove the fruit. Put a small handful of salt on your cutting board and use the peel of the fruit to rub it into the cutting board. Clean both sides of the cutting board this way, and then rinse with hot water. Any salt will work, but I like a slightly chunkier salt. Lemon or Grapefruit Essential Oil Approach Put a small handful of salt on your cutting board and add 3 drops of Lemon or Grapefruit essential oil (right on the cutting board). Use a clean abrasive sponge to rub in the salt and essential oil. Clean both sides of the cutting board this way, using 3 drops on each side, and rinse with hot water. Use Both! We live in Florida and have abundant grapefruit and lemon trees. I use the fruit peels, salt and essential oil! Side effect: Not only will your cutting board smell great and be free of unwanted bacteria—the whole kitchen will smell amazing! My only caution: Lemon and Grapefruit essential oils both react to sunlight. Be sure not to get the essential oil on your skin if you’re going to be in the sun (using cleaning gloves resolves any concern). You can read more about this in your Introduction to Essential Oils free class, in the Methods of Use lesson, under the Safety Guidelines.

Green Mandarin, Calendula & Vanilla Lip Balm In your Introduction to Essential Oils class, we go over how to make lip balm. You can find this again in the Making Products lesson (#7 in the directions). This recipe is a great variation on the lip balm recipe from the intro class. The basic idea is to first melt the beeswax and the vanilla jojoba, then add the calendula infused oil, and add the Green Mandarin essential oil last. Let the blend stand and harden for a few hours before use. Measure the vanilla jojoba, calendula oil and beeswax by weight. I use a small kitchen scale to measure weight. • • • •

1 oz of beeswax 1 oz of calendula oil 2 oz of vanilla jojoba wax (jojoba “oil” is actually a wax) 20 drops of Green Mandarin essential oil

This makes about 24 tubes if your tube is 5 ml (1/6 oz). Melt the jojoba and beeswax in a double boiler (look back in the class for a homemade double boiler technique). When melted, add the calendula oil and stir with a glass stirring rod, then take off the stove. Add the Green Mandarin oil, stir and pour immediately into lip balm tubes. It helps to have a lip balm tray to hold the tubes in place. These make really great gifts and they only cost about $2.00 each to make, if you buy the smallest size of all the ingredients. When you buy larger sizes of the ingredients, they cost even less to make. 8

I’m Not Scared at Night Spray Do you know any children who get scared at night? This recipe is a spray to help keep scary nighttime monsters away! • 2 oz water in a 2 oz spray bottle • 3 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) • 3 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Just add the essential oil drops to the water and shake before use. Leave by the bed and spray in the direction of the scary monster! We all know monsters don’t like the smell of essential oils! It works every time! Be sure to make a fun and colorful label for the spray, and enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep!

Cold Sore Remedy If you or anyone you know gets cold sores on their lips, you’ll love this recipe! Fill a 1 oz (30 ml) glass jar with aloe vera gel (almost to the top, but not quite full). Add 30 drops of Sandalwood essential oil (Santalum album) and 3 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus radiata). Mix and keep the jar closed. When a cold sore begins to form, use a small dab of the aloe blend right on the spot. During the day, apply it every hour for the first two days. Not only will the sore be significantly less painful, but it won’t stick around as long. You may even find that after a few rounds of using this blend, you start to get cold sores less often. The most vital aspect to this blend is that you have excellent quality essential oils. Poor quality oils will irritate the cold sore. Cold & Flu Sleep Remedy We all know that sleep is so important when you’re sick, to give your body time to recover. But it’s often hard to sleep when you’re congested or coughing. This spray can be so helpful! • • • • •

2 5 5 5 5

oz water in a 2 oz spray bottle drops Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) drops Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)

Spray liberally under your pillow and on top of the sheets right before bed.

Bond With Your Newborn Baby One of my favorite tricks is to teach moms and dads with newborns to apply essential oils in a blend to their own backs, and then when they hold their baby, the healing oils are inhaled, yet never come into contact with the baby’s skin. It’s just enough! And it’s a nice way for baby and parents to bond. The aromas can increase a baby’s sense of security, and as the child gets older, they come to associate the scent with security and reassurance. My favorite two oils to recommend for babies are Roman Chamomile and Lavender. When baby needs extra help calming down, I recommend having the aroma around them for short periods of time, rather than using the oils on their skin directly.

Natural Hand Scrub This recipe is for those of you who need a really good cleaning scrub for your hands. Maybe you’re a gardener, or perhaps you work with clay. This recipe is hands-down one of my favorites anytime I need a good hand scrub! Plus, it nourishes skin, so it won’t dry your hands out if you use it on a regular basis. • • • • •

1.5 oz (45 ml) pink Himalayan salt 1 oz (30 ml) coconut oil 1 oz (30 ml) jojoba oil 25 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) 15 drops Lemon essential oil (Citrus limon)

Combine salt, coconut oil and jojoba in a 4 oz jar with a cover. Mix in essential oils. Use 1 tablespoon of the scrub to wash your hands. An abrasive brush can be very helpful when cleaning your fingernails!

Blending by Plant Parts This tip is a sneak peek into Aromahead Institute’s online Aromatherapy Certification Program. In the certification, we’ve got a wonderful lesson on a blending technique that’s guided by plant parts, such as flowers and roots, as opposed to blending by scent or therapeutic qualities. Imagine a blend made from oils extracted from flowers. What comes to mind? I immediately feel the heart connection, the beauty of flowers, the colors and the range of floral, sweet aromas. Now imagine a blend made just from root oils. How is this feeling different? The roots of plants are deep in the earth, anchoring the plant to the ground. When I smell root oils I feel grounded, settled, connected. When someone is feeling ungrounded, anxious, or disconnected, I might make a blend of oils extracted from roots. When blending, if we consider the plant parts and the emotional support the oils can bring, we have just deepened the blend’s impact. Flowers — Flowers are abundant in the springtime and represent new growth. The oils made from flowers are often used for emotional support. Giving flowers, or blends made from flowers, is about supporting love, friendship, and forgiveness, and soothing the heart and mind. Roots — The roots of a plant anchor it to the soil, and absorb water and nutrients vital to the plant’s growth. Oils extracted from roots can support us through times of high anxiety and instability. They support feeling grounded, settled, and calm.

Blending by Plant Parts (Cont.) There is a great free tool at Aromatics International that lists the oils by plant part. This tool lets you Shop by Mind/Body/ Spirit. Click on the link. For a list of oils made from flowers, scroll down and look for Soothing the Heart and Calming the Mind. Then click Read More for the list of oils. For a list of oils made from roots, scroll down and look for Stability and Balance. Then click Read More. Blending by plant part can help you come up with truly original ideas you may not have thought of from a different perspective. It can also put you in touch with the plants in compelling emotional ways.
