welcome Welcome to the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center and tonight’s performance of The Main Street Project. This endeavor has been four years in the making – creating dialogue with dancers, artists, students and elders in the community to gain an informed perspective on the issue. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all who have been involved in this process – with your contribution, the work has become the voice of a collective, rather than an individual. It is my belief that people are losing connection to one another, and with the advent of technology, introduced new methods of distraction. I sought to create a work that provided commentary on this changing societal landscape – in hope to create a dialog, and incite action toward a more neighborly future. As many regular ARENA audiences know, I collaborate heavily with my dancers – utilizing their unique perspectives to enrich the work at hand. The challenge of this project for me was how to create an authentic dance on the subject matter; this beastly concept of a better community, a better neighborhood, a better Main Street. The work had to be honest, with gracious movers giving themselves on stage – requiring a high level of vulnerability. Thank you to my dancers for this incredible contribution – giving The Main Street Project a beating pulse, and a beautiful humanity. This work is a platform to share ideas, in hopes to create some kind of consciousness surrounding how we act. From this contemplation, I hope we may be more aware of the diversity amongst us, say hello or good morning to those we pass on the street, and realize that we are not alone in this human journey. I hope you enjoy the show. I look forward to continuing these conversations, and working toward being a better neighbor myself. Best. Mathew Janczewski company history Mathew Janczewski’s ARENA DANCES has been an artistic force in the Twin Cities for the past 18 years, with over 30 works created and more yet to come. The work is abstract in form, giving shape to emotions — exploring the depths and limits of what drives us as humans to connect, to break away, to survive. The company has toured to Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and residencies throughout Minnesota. In Europe, the company has taught and performed at the 7th and 15th Open Look International Summer Dance Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia, the 3rd TOUCH Festival in Arkanghelsk, Russia, and the L1 Dance Festival in Budapest, Hungary. Janczewski’s work has been the recipient of a Sage Award (2005), Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” (2008), and received funding from The Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, McKnight Foundation, Target Foundation, Archie D. & Bertha H. Walker Foundation, Kevin J. Mossier Foundation, New England Foundation for the Arts, The National Dance Project, The Spanish Embassy of American Universities, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Reviewing for mnartists.org, Lightsey Darst called Janczewski’s work “physically brilliant yet emotionally intimate, dramatic, widely varied, witty and heartfelt.”

The Main Street Project explores how current attitudes, relationships and habits have changed in an information-driven technological world by utilizing integrative forms of media – juxtaposing visceral and explosive movement with electro/techno/pop music, folk-inspired songs, and projections of filmed interviews with people from diverse communities and backgrounds. The work illuminates themes of isolation and belonging in contemporary society to ask the question, does “Main Street” still exist? The Main Street Project is informed by ARENA’s Intergenerational Residency Program, which utilizes community outreach between youth and elder communities to create dialogue about universal topics such as home, community, and connection.

artistic director Mathew Janczewski, based in Minneapolis, MN since 1989, received his BFA in Dance from The University of Minnesota in 1994. Janczewski’s work has been presented by festivals and presenting organizations in the U.S. and Europe. Janczewski’s career as a dancer has spanned nearly three decades – having performed with JAZZDANCE! by Danny Buraczeski, Shapiro & Smith Dance, and Robin Stiehm’s Dancing People Company -- amongst many other local independent choreographers. In Minneapolis, Janczewski’s work has been presented at numerous venues including the Walker Art Center, Southern Theater, McKnight Theater at the Ordway, Red Eye Theater, The LAB Theater, Illusion Theater, Ritz Theater, Old Arizona, Intermedia Arts and its new home for two years at The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts. Janczewski has created several commissioned works for other companies and educational facilities including Zenon Dance Company, Minnesota Dance Theater, aTrek Dance, Cleveland Repertory Project, UrepCo., Carleton College, St. Olaf College, Gustavus Adolphus College, Macalester College, Mankato State University, St. Paul Conservatory for the Performing Arts, and the Perpich Center for the Arts. “To ask questions and incite awakening, both in myself and my collaborators, through the making of work, and in my audience, through their experience of performance. I seek to balance this need for personal discovery and growth with a responsibility I have to my audience. I am deeply concerned with making my work relevant to the public that I am addressing.” - Mathew Janczewski

BIO GR A PH I E S Kimmie Allen (Dancer): Kimmie was born and raised in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where she grew up surrounded by a family of classical musicians who nurtured and influenced her love of dance. She graduated in 2006 with a BFA in dance performance and choreography from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she had the honor of working with choreographers Shapiro and Smith and Trebien Pollard. The past 7 years in Minneapolis have been a time of growth and change for Kimmie. She has become an avid bicyclist, a massage therapist and Thai massage body worker, an auntie, a professional dancer, and most recently she completed her first triathlon, which she cannot wait to do more of. The support of her family and friends has meant everything to her, and she would not be the same person without it. Kimmie is grateful to be a part of tonight’s collaboration, and is thrilled and honored to have worked with such inspiring individuals during the creation of The Main Street Project. Sarah Baumert (Dancer): Sarah is a dance artist, native to Nebraska, with a BFA in dance from the University of Minnesota. Sarah’s own work has been presented by Dance Advance of Philadelphia, the Somerville Arts Council, and the MIT program for Art, Culture, and Technology, among others. In her early years as a performer she danced with the Zenon Dance Company in Minneapolis. She has continued to work independently as a performer with Xavier LeRoy (Germany), Sean Feldman (UK), Willi Dorner (Australia), Sarah Smith, Daniel McCusker, and Nell Breyer (Boston), Lisa Krauss (Philadelphia), Emily Johnson, Justin Jones, Maggie Bergeron, Hannah Kramer and Mathew Janczewski of Minneapolis. Sarah is also a yoga educator with over 1000 hours of study and is involved in research with the Boston Medical Center on yoga’s effects

on children with behavioral disorders. Her personal research and inspiration include courses on Material for the Spine with Steve Paxton, the Tuning Scores of Lisa Nelson, the Feldenkrais technique, mushroom hunting, and conversations about science with her husband. Elise Erickson (Dancer): Elise grew up in Geneva, Switzerland and graduated from Carleton College with majors in Dance and Biology. At Carleton she had the pleasure of performing works by several Minneapolisbased artists, and presented her choreography at the Kennedy Center with the American College Dance Festival. Since graduating, she has performed in Mathew Janczewski’s Pop/UGLY, and several works by Angharad Davies. Elise joined ARENA in summer 2013, and is absolutely thrilled to have such an opportunity. Outside of the studio, she is the office manager with Ragamala Dance, and loves to spend any free time sharing food with friends, laughing, traveling and sleeping. Elise sends so much love and thanks to her family, friends, mentors and, of course, the hilarious and loveable artists of ARENA. Dustin Haug (Dancer): Dustin lives in St. Paul with his crazy-awesome daughter Anawynn and loving wife Kelly Jo, without whose generous support he could not be here with you tonight. In addition to performing, Dustin teaches dance at Zenon, substitutes for St. Paul Public Schools, and tutors for the ACT. He loves biking, brewing beer, growing food, being loud, chemistry, and cooking hearty meals. Sharing the stage with Blake, Elise, Kimmie, Timmy, and Sarah brings him great joy. Thanks also goes out to his parents, who never miss a show and are always there when he needs them.

Blake Nellis (Dancer): Originally from Door County, Wisconsin, Blake graduated from Luther College with a degree in Theater/ Dance and is currently a visiting faculty in the Visual & Performing Arts Department. He has recently produced work at the Walker Art Center, Red Eye Theater, Bryant Lake Bowl Theater, Earthdance, The James Sewell Ballet TEK Box, and the Jewel Theater at Luther College. His other professional experience includes Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater, Jim Lieberthal’s Foothold Project, Rosy Simas & Taja Will. Blake is a 2013 recipient of a Metropolitan Regional Arts Council “Next Step” grant. He is grateful to Mathew and this cool, creative, kind-hearted company for the opportunity to play/question. Timmy Wagner (Dancer): Timmy grew up in Ada, MN, attained his Bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College, and is now happy and humbled to be in his fourth season with ARENA Dances. In that time, he has performed many works with Mathew Janczewski and has also performed with BodyCartography Project, Vanessa Voskuil, Flying Foot Forum, Jennifer Arave, Rosy Simas, Taja Will, and Blake Nellis. Many thanks to all of the gracious and gregarious storytelling that has lead to the Main Street Project!

Critics Circle Best Costume Design award (The Green Bird 2000), Minnesota State Arts Board Initiative Grant (2005 and 2013) and a McKnight Theatre Artists Fellowship (1999). In 2011 she received The Sage Award for Dance Outstanding Design. Heidi Eckwall (Lighting Designer): Heidi is a lighting designer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she frequently collaborates with choreographers Emily Johnson, the BodyCartography Project and Hijack. She has toured nationally and internationally as a lighting supervisor with Urban Bush Women, Compagnie Jant-Bi and Margaret Jenkins. Heidi holds a B.A. in South Asian Studies from the University of Minnesota. Recent dance credits include SHORE, Niicugni and Thank-You Bar for Emily Johnson, Matching Drapes for Chris Schlichting, redundant ready reading radish Red Eye for Hijack, Healing Wars for Liz Lerman and Scaffold Room (assistant LD) for Ralph Lemon. Previous designs for Mathew Janczewski include Pop/Ugly, Matador and In the Arena.

Cully Gallagher (Film/Video Production): Cully is a documentary producer and videographer. His work has been broadcast nationally on PBS, the Discovery Channel, and MTV. He traveled to China as cinematographer for the cross-cultural Sonya Berlovitz (Costumes): designed doc Bringing King to China. Last year this costumes for over 50 productions at film was an official selection at twelve Theatre de la Jeune Lune between 1980international film festivals, winning two 2008. Productions elsewhere have included Humanitarian Awards and two for Best The Moving Company, Playmakers Documentary. Last year, Cully collaborated Repertory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory with the Minnesota Historical Society Theatre, Children’s Theatre Company, to produce a series of fourteen videos the Guthrie Theatre, American Repertory highlighting intergenerational community Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, Actors projects throughout the state. Two Theatre of Louisville, The Jungle Theater, of these mini-docs were used as field Ten Thousand Things Theater Company, segments in Tell Me a Story, a documentary Theatre Latte Da, Arena Dances and broadcast statewide on PBS. Cully is Minnesota Dance Theatre. Ms. Berlovitz currently working with the Minnesota has been the recipient of numerous grants Historical Society on a new series of short and awards including The Bay Area Theatre documentaries. 6

Scott Stafford (Marketing Coordinator): Scott is a native of Detroit, Michigan, earning his BA from Michigan State University. Stafford has maintained public relations positions with organizations including the Michigan Opera Theatre / Detroit Opera House, The Michigan State University Department of Theatre, and relocated to Minneapolis in October of 2013 to work with ARENA DANCES. Stafford is grateful to work such a kind-hearted group of people, and in his downtime, can be found on long runs along the Mississippi and rollerblading around Lake Calhoun.

Jane Shockley (Rehearsal Director): Jane has been dancing in and out of the Twin Cities for over twenty years as a founding member of the Zenon Dance Company and as a collaborator in the choreographic collective Body Logic. She danced with New York choreographers Doug Elkins, David Dorfman and Barbara Mahler. Jane was also a founding member of the nationally recognized New Dance Performance Laboratory where she worked as a dancer and artistic resource for choreographers exploring new ideas in performance. She has performed with Minneapolis choreographers Morgan Thorson, Shawn McConneloug, and Hijack, as well as the Minnesota Opera’s productions of Transatlantic and Macbeth. Jane is a Senior Lecturer in Dance at Carleton College and received the Sage Award for Outstanding Dance Educator of 2009.

Refunds will be given only when an event is cancelled and not rescheduled. SMPAC reserves the right to substitute comparable attractions or to change the dates of programs when compelled to do so by circumstances beyond our control. No refunds will be made in such cases. Performances are subject to change without notice. If unable to attend a performance, the donation of your ticket(s) to the SMPAC would be appreciated to enable resale. Your contribution can be acknowledged for tax deduction purposes. Latecomer Policy: Performances start at the time stated on your ticket. If you arrive late and the performance has begun, ushers will seat you where it will be least disruptive to the audience and performers. You may take your reserved seat during intermission. Services for patrons with disabilities: SMPAC is accessible to persons with disabilities. Please notify the Box Office when you purchase tickets if special arrangements are required. Limited handicap accessible seating is available. Seeing Eye Dogs are allowed. Assisted Listening Devices and large-print programs are available upon request. Audio Description and American Sign Language Interpreted performances are available upon request and where applicable. At least two weeks notice is required to provide these services.
