Apprenticeships explained An Apprenticeship is a workbased learning programme consisting of a series of structured qualifications that provides on and off-the-job training, allowing people to gain a qualification whilst earning a wage. Apprenticeship programmes are unique in that they offer flexibility to the Apprentice and the employer, to develop a qualification relevant to the business over a minimum of 12 to 18 month period. 2

• Becoming an Apprentice gives you the opportunity to work for a real employer, earn a real salary and gain a real qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience. • Apprentices should typically work for at least 30 hours a week, apart from in exceptional circumstances. • Over 150,000 employers are offering Apprenticeships covering more than 170 industries and 1,500 job roles. • On completion, the majority of Apprentices (85%) will stay in employment, with two-thirds (64%) staying with the same employer.

• A third (32%) of all former Apprentices had received a promotion within 12 months of finishing, and of those in work, three quarters (75%) reported taking on more responsibility in their job. Employers think that qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications.

First choice for Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are a great way for you to enter many different careers, but are they right for you? Here we list 5 advantages of doing an Apprenticeship. 1. Apprenticeships are structured training programmes which give you a chance to work towards a qualification. They help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in your chosen industry. Getting into employment earlier means there’s lots of potential for you to progress in your career quickly. You can also begin to earn a good salary much earlier on in your life. 2. Apprenticeships give you fantastic experience in the working world and show employers that you can ‘hit the ground running’. Hands-on training gives you a real chance to put your skills into practice and helps you to gain more confidence in a working environment. 3. You earn while you learn. That’s right! No student loans, no tuition fees, and, hopefully, no debt. You’ll be paid a salary by your employer, and the government tends to cover the cost of the training for most young people. 4. Choice. There are over 200 different types of Apprenticeships. So whether you’re hankering after a career in business, health care, engineering or construction, there’s something for everyone. 5. Apprenticeships offer a varied learning experience. You won’t have to spend all of your days studying; most of the time you’ll be working at a company. It’s all about learning while doing, and learning from others in your industry. You can even gain access to higher qualifications, such as HNCs, HNDs, foundation degrees or honours degrees.

Well received by employers Our bespoke services have been greeted with approval by a wealth of employer partners Yvonne Day, Human Resources Director UK at Cofely Fabricom GDF SUEZ UK, commented: “Grimsby Institute are our first-choice of provider. All of our Technical Engineering Apprentices are of the highest calibre and have completed way in front of others at the same stages of their

6

development. The management team at the Grimsby Institute are outstanding and we have close interactions with assessors and tutors.”

Sue Hodds, owner of Lilly’s Tea Room in Keelby, explains how enrolling a kitchen employee on an Apprenticeship has proven advantageous to all involved: “I was keen to use the Institute because I trained there as a Chef. This gives our Apprentice a qualification while working in the kitchen and getting on-the-job training. “I’ve got a lot of people working for

me who’ve all got different skills, who haven’t necessarily got qualifications. Having an Apprentice keeps us up-todate with new things. It’s a while since I trained and I’m a bit out-dated but Danielle has passed things back that she has learnt.”

Stephen Campbell, owner of The Hair Studio, Grimsby, trained as an Apprentice himself at the Grimsby Institute almost thirty years ago. After working in both Grimsby and London for more than twenty years, Stephen opened his own salon and now trains Apprentices with the Grimsby Institute: “From what I’ve already seen, the Grimsby Institute is really on our wavelength and the training that Apprentices receive, both here and at the

Institute, is going to marry together well. The hands-on approach to learning is the way I learnt and it’s stood the test of time.

Apprentice Success Apprentice wins Gold at UKSkills Nineteen-year-old Luke Sherwood, a Level 3 Fabrication Apprentice, has been named as the national champion of Construction Metalwork at the UKSkills competition, recently held at Birmingham NEC, and is now waiting to hear if he has made it through to the UK Team which could see him competing in Abu Dhabi in 2017. Luke lives in Wrawby, near Brigg, and decided to train for an Apprenticeship through the Grimsby Institute, having secured a job as a Vehicle Bodybuilder and Fabricator with his employer, G Broughton & Sons. Hardworking Luke initially gaining a Saturday job with the company following a weeks work placement while he was still at school. Luke said: “I was approached by the tutors at the Institute who asked if I wanted to compete. I’m quite a competitive person and I really wanted to do it. The Regional Heat was held at the Centre for the Assessment of Technical Competence – Humber (CATCH) and when I found out I’d got through to the final I had about eight weeks to prepare. I would sometimes stay behind and do extra work with the tutors to help me get ready.” During the Regional Heat Luke was tasked with creating the base for a model crane in 7 ½ hours and for the final the task was to complete the crane with the arm and rig in 14 hours. Luke was also invited to attend a Masterclass, held for the competitors by the Head Judge, which gave them tips on how to be successful at the Final. Luke continued: “There were a lot of skills involved like being able to read and understand the drawings and marking out. I then had to fold the metal and use welding skills to finish the job off. The hardest part for me was the thermal cutting, because it had to be so neat, and then working to such fine tolerances within the time constraints.” “It was an amazing experience. Without the Institute none of this would have happened, the tutors have really helped me a lot and even stayed back and worked extra hours to help me, teaching me things that I didn’t know, and that’s what helped me do so well. I feel really proud to be number one.”
