1. Introduction The Center is an interdisciplinary "Center of Excellence" funded by the Danish National Research Foundation, with supplementary funding from the University of Copenhagen (Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Theology and Faculty of Health Sciences). The current research program of the center, which runs from March 1, 2007 – February 28, 2012, is entitled "The Self: An Integrative Approach". The Center’s research is divided into six sections: • • • • • •

Although the Center’s research is mainly focused on conceptual and theoretical issues, it is not a narrowly conceived philosophical investigation, but one that is enriched and informed by empirical research, and which involves active collaboration with psychologists, psychiatrists and neuroscientists.

During 2007 the Center organized, co-organized, and/or co-sponsored 7 conferences and workshops (with more than 140 speakers) as well as 10 individual guest lectures by invited speakers, and it had more than 45 foreign visitors. The staff of the Center published 56 books and articles, submitted 49 manuscripts for publication, and presented more than 89 papers and lectures in Denmark, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Germany, UK, France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Norway, Israel, Canada and USA. The Center’s interdisciplinary meetings have attracted foreign PhD students from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Turkey, Hungary, Latvia, Italy, Japan and USA. Among the conferences and workshops organized by the Center in 2007, the following two might be singled out as having attracted particular attention in terms of international attendance: Feb. 8-10: Despite Oneself. Other highlights include: In his capacity as member of the steering committee of the Research Priority Area “Body and Mind” at the University of Copenhagen, Dan Zahavi was the original promoter and proposer of the new education Cognition and Communication, which subsequently received official approval by the Danish Akkrediteringsrådet. Dan Zahavi joined Shaun Gallagher as co-editor-in-chief of the journal Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences (publisher by Springer). Arne Grøn obtained 1.997.590 DKK in funding from the VELUX FONDEN to a project entitled "Trust, Conflict, Recognition".

Arne Grøn has obtained funding from the VELUX FONDEN to a research project entitled “Trust, Conflict, Recognition”. The core research group will be Arne Grøn, Anne Marie Pahuus (post.doc.), Claudia Welz (post.doc.) and Gry Ardal Christensen (Ph.D.-student). The project will run from 2008-2011. The precise amount will figure in the center’s annual reports for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

4. Research Arne Grøn has worked primarily on the following projects: 1. Within the overall project of a hermeneutical philosophy of religion, studies have focused on a) religion and interpretation, and the question of transcendence, b) religion and (in)humanity, c) phenomenology of religious life and hermeneutics of facticity in Heidegger. 2. Within the overall project of a hermeneutical theory of subjectivity, studies have focused on: a) subjectivity, interiority, and exteriority, particularly in Kierkegaard and Levinas, b) dialectics of recognition, singularity and alterity, c) consciousness, experience and history, particularly in discussing Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, d) freedom and history in Kierkegaard’s analysis of angst, e) subjectivity, spontaneity and sovereignty, in discussing Løgstrup and Kierkegaard 3. In the context of a project entitled Ethics of Vision, studies have focused on the relation of subjectivity and sociality, in discussing Kierkegaard’s Works of Love. Josef Parnas continued his main research interests in schizophrenia, theoretical psychopathology and exploring the issue of experiential self-anomalies in early schizophrenia. This year the self-disorders’ scale (EASE) was being translated into Portuguese, Slovenian, and Hebrew. The publication of the Danish version is being completed, and supplemented by guiding prototypical interview-questions, for each examined experiential domain. The year has been used to prepare a new prospective longitudinal study of children at risk for schizophrenia to be conducted in Israel (Dept. of Psychology, University of Haifa), with the main focus on self-disorders as phenotypic predictors. Dan Zahavi has primarily focused on the following projects: 1. Ongoing work on the social dimension of self-experience. 2. An analysis of Max Scheler’s contribution to an understanding of empathy and social cognition 3. A critical discussion of simulation theory 4. Ongoing work on the relation between phenomenology and naturalism. 5. A discussion of the relation between selfhood and unity of consciousness. Christian Beenfeldt’s doctoral project concerns our two basic perspectives on consciousness: The detached third-person perspective (TPP) where we observe the physiology and behavior of other people – and the first-person perspective (FPP) where we use self-awareness to directly inspect our own consciousness. If we only employ TPP, we cannot do justice to the phenomenology of our conscious awareness. If we only employ FPP, we divorce consciousness from the physical world and cannot make sense of contemporary neuroscience. This problem, known as the "explanatory gap", is central to contemporary philosophy of mind. The aim of the thesis is to bridge the gap by investigating the nature and epistemic status of FPP data. In 2007, Beenfeldt has mainly investigated the perspective on consciousness we find in functionalism (especially, Turing Machine computational functionalism) and in Dennett's heterophenomenology. While at the Center, Thomas Brudholm finished his book Resentment’s Virtue: Jean Améry and the Refusal to Forgive, which will be released with Temple University Press in February 2008. His research focuses on ethical issues arising from the attempts of individuals and societies to deal with an atrocious past. The book addresses the role of victims’ resentment in relation to moral repair of the most severe damages to trust and dignity.

Gry Ardal Christensen started in a one year position as research assistant on February 1, 2007. Working under the supervision of Arne Grøn, Gry Ardal Christensen’s research was primarily conducted under the centre’s research topic Self and Normativity. Focusing on the relationship between ethical selfhood and intersubjectivity, Gry Ardal Christensen particularly investigated the fruitfulness of a dialogue between the philosophies of Hannah Arendt and Emmanuel Lévinas. The ambition is to bring this perspective to bear on a phenomenological analysis of the concept of trust in relation to selfhood and sociality. Tim Crane was Visiting Professor at the Center from April 10 – 30, 2007. While at the Center he pursued his research on the philosophy of perception. His current project is to challenge a widespread consensus that the structure of perception is that of a 'propositional attitude' in Russell's sense; instead, perception should be treated phenomenologically as having many different kinds of content. During his stay he finished a draft of his paper, “Is perception a propositional attitude?”, which he intends to submit to the Philosophical Quarterly. He also wrote a review of Peter Unger's All the Power in the World for the Times Literary Supplement. He gave the University's 3rd Brain and Mind Lecture (the text can be found here) and a public talk at the Center, “Aboutness and Non-existence”. Katalin Farkas was Visiting Professor at the Center from April 10 – 30, 2007. She pursued her research on the notion of subjective indistinguishability and phenomenal intentionality. Her project is to develop a philosophical understanding of the mind that is centred on the phenomenal features of mental states, and explains further features – like intentionality – on this basis. During her stay she worked on revising her book manuscript The Subject's Point of View (under contract with Oxford University Press), and finished and submitted a paper for The Monist called “Phenomenal Intentionality without Compromise”. She also gave a public talk at the Center, with the title “Subjective Indiscriminability and Dreams”. Wolfgang Fasching worked on his research project about the concept of consciousness with regard to meditative states of mind while at the Center. He focused on the question of the transparency of consciousness and the possibility of a consciousness of consciousness. Thor Grünbaum was a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall College, University of Cambridge from January 1 – July 31 (the last half of a one year fellowship). During his research stay, Thor Grünbaum worked on four articles: “Anscombe on Practical Knowledge”, “The Paradox of Practical Knowledge”, “Trying and the Arguments from Total Failure”, and “The Body in Action”. He was in close contact with and received postdoctoral supervision by Professor Jane Heal (Head of the Faculty of Philosophy, Cambridge). He also actively participated in reading groups and departmental seminars. On August 1, 2007, Thor Grünbaum started a new threeyear postdoctoral project at the Center. The project concerns the way in which different notions of rationality as a condition for ascription of consciousness apply to theories of minimal self-consciousness. The first period of the project is mainly devoted to reading and getting a clear sense of the different positions and problems in the literature. He will also be writing an article on “Action and Agency” for a forthcoming handbook in Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences. Johan Eckart Hansen started a three-year PhD. project at the Center on March 1, 2007. The project concerns the relationship between a minimal or core-self and a more extended narrative self. It will examine the viability and usefulness of this distinction through a clarification of the possibilities and the limitations in a narrative understanding of subjectivity. A double question guides the project: What does the idea of the storied or narrative self presuppose in terms of more minimal forms of selfhood, and what does it make possible? The first half year of the work on the project has been devoted to a study of different theories that distinguish between minimal and extended self (Neisser, Damasio, Gallagher, and others) and different narrative theories of selfhood (Ricoeur, Carr, MacIntyre, Taylor, and others). The aim of this preliminary work is to draw a map of the different positions in the literature and try to

systematize the central problems that surface in the discussions of narrative and minimal forms of self. Paul Heeffer is currently working on a four-year research project (Research Foundation – Flanders) on phenomenology and the tendency to naturalization. On the basis of authors like Heidegger, Husserl, Sartre and Levinas, the project aims at an elaboration of a present-day ontology of consciousness –, both in response to the naturalistic tendencies in contemporary phenomenology, and with the objective of determining the limits and possibilities of interdisciplinary investigations on consciousness (by cognitive sciences and neurosciences on the one hand, and phenomenology on the other). During his stay at the Center, Paul Heeffer focused his research on current formulations of the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness in philosophy of mind and on the different ways in which current phenomenologists try to naturalize phenomenology. Line Ryberg Ingerslev’s dissertation project is entitled “Conflict and Autonomy”. In three steps the project investigates the embodied expressive existence of human beings and its social implication of tension, conflict and negotiation of meaning. The first step consists in a philosophical reflection on anthropological aspects of subjectivity; here the focus is mainly on Helmuth Plessner’s Philosophical Anthropology. The second step consists in a discussion of different conceptions of intersubjectivity and the possibility of asocial sociality and finally a practical perspective considers the role of conflict in relation to the self-understanding of children. In the first 8 month of her dissertation project Ingerslev has been focussing on the self-relation in the light of Helmuth Plessner’s Philosophical Anthropology, working out a hypothesis of tensions of embodied selfhood. Werner G. Jeanrond (Lund University) was Visiting Professor from September-November 2007. He worked on his book project on the theology of love, focusing in particular on the development of notions of agency, subjectivity and community in different biblical, patristic, medieval, pre-modern, modern and contemporary religious and philosophical traditions of love. He worked closely with Arne Grøn, Claudia Welz and Niels Grønkjær on four chapters on the history of love in the Christian tradition. Moreover, he worked on a number of articles discussing the relationship between religion, love and politics. Rasmus Thybo Jensen’s dissertation project is entitled “The intentionality of Action”. In his thesis Rasmus Thybo investigates two main questions: 1) The possibility of giving a disjunctive account of intentional actions and action awareness in analogy to relational accounts of perception. It is argued that we need such a disjunctive account that takes the awareness we have of ourselves when performing actions to be dependent on actual bodily movement and on the environment being, at least to a certain extent, as we take it to be. 2) The possible non-conceptual nature of the bodily awareness involved in bodily actions. Here it is argued that at least some versions of a non-conceptual action-awareness will threaten the very notion of an agent in the world in a similar fashion as such an element arguably threatens the idea of a perceiver of the world if introduced as part of our perception. In addition to working on the dissertation, Rasmus Thybo has been writing on an article on Merleau-Ponty’s use of psychopathology to be submitted in 2008. Joel Krueger began a two-year postdoctoral project at the Center on July 1, 2007. His research focuses on the relationship between consciousness and self. More precisely, his project is concerned with investigating how “extended mind” style arguments alter our understanding of consciousness, self, and moral agency. In addition to using the theoretical and empirical resources of western philosophy of mind, phenomenology and cognitive science, Krueger also draws heavily on Asian philosophical traditions.

Dorothée Legrand works on the problems of self and self-consciousness from phenomenological, neuroscientific and clinical perspectives. She intends to clarify the description of a minimal form of self-consciousness at the pre-reflective level, defined as the subjective dimension of conscious experience, the first-person perspective from which objects are experienced. She mainly focuses on the bodily form of such basic self-consciousness. On this basis, she seeks to identify the neurophysiological processes underlying such a form of self-consciousness. She investigates how the latter might be grounded in sensori-motor integrative processes. René Korsholm Rosfort’s research at the Philosophical Department at University of Florence (6 periods of a total of 3 months) is divided in two main areas: 1) A collaboration with professor Roberta Lanfredini on the integration of philosophy, psychopathology, and neuroscience. The collaboration is worked out as a coorganisation of a series of 8 seminars, which were held from January to June 2007, under the headline: La mente e i fenomeni filosofia, psicopatologia e neuroscienze (The Mind and the Phenomena - Philosophy, Psychopathology, and Neuroscience). 2) An extended collaboration with the psychiatry professor Giovanni Stanghellini (begun in 2005). They are working on an interdisciplinary project (psychopathology and philosophy) on emotion and personhood. Finally, he is planning to submit a book project for Oxford University Press (the series International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychiatry) with the working title "Emotions and Personhood". Borut Skodlar was a guest researcher at the Center from November 7-23, 2007. He worked on his Ph.D., "Phenomenological Analysis of Reasons for Suicide in Schizophrenia Patients", under the supervision of Prof. Josef Parnas. Takaya Suto’s project is on criticism of metaphysics and theory of subjectivity in Kierkegaard and Foucault, focusing on the notion of self-relation and the question of interiority and exteriority. Morten Sørensen Thaning’s dissertation project is entitled H.-G. Gadamer’s Hermeneutic Philosophy. Thaning departs from the question: In what sense can Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics be conceived as a transcendental form of philosophy? Gadamer’s comments on the transcendentalism in Heidegger’s Sein und Zeit points to a strong criticism of traditional forms of transcendental philosophy. This criticism however must be confronted with Gadamer’s own claim concerning the transcendental status of language. Thaning explains this ambiguity by construing Gadamer’s transcendentalism as a philosophy of experience. This notion of transcendental hermeneutics is developed by comparing Gadamer’s hermeneutics with John McDowell’s minimal empiricism. Five defining characteristics of a transcendental form of hermeneutics is elicited: 1) A conceptualist account of experience which rests on a contextualist understanding of concepts. 2) Language as the privileged form of access to conceptual content. 3) A historicist concept of truth and a corresponding ‘diagnostic’ response to scepticism. 4) An (Hegelian) emphasis on the unlimited nature of spontaneity. 5) An element of experience which is irreducibly ethical. Sigríður Þorgeirsdóttir was Visiting Professor at the Center from March 26 – May 26, 2007. She worked on: 1) Completion of two chapters for a book on Birth, Death and the Feminine that is a coproject with Robin May Schott, Vigdis Songe-Møller and Sara Heinämaa. Her chapters are mainly on the conception of birth in Nietzsche´s philosophy. She presented some results of the research at the Center on May 8 with special emphasis on the conception of birth with reference to embodiment and selfhood. The manuscript will be submitted to Indiana University Press. 2) She prepared a paper to give at the opening conference of the Nordic Society of Philosophy of Religion, at the University of Oslo, June 8-10. 3) She edited translations into Icelandic of articles by Hannah Arendt.

Somogy Varga’s dissertation project is entitled “Authenticity and Authentification” and it starts with a critical assessment of two influential accounts of authenticity. One account involves a kind of inner perception, stating that I am aware of my deepest desires, motivations thanks to a cognitive process by which I detected their presence. The second account involves no detection, but emphasizes the constructive dimension of self-ascriptions. Varga’s point is that both accounts fail to answer the question of authenticity, because the nature of this question is innately normative, involving not so much detection or creation, but judgment. Using accounts of Heidegger, Frankfurt and Taylor, Varga sets out to reconstruct a concept of authenticity in which this judgment has an inherent social aspect that cannot be reduced to the subject alone. Claudia Welz has mainly worked on four projects including lectures and articles connected to them: 1. She has organized an international workshop entitled “Despite Oneself. Subjectivity and its Secret in Kierkegaard and Levinas” (08.-10.02.2007) and is editing a volume on the theme. 2. The manuscript of her dissertation on God’s (non)phenomenality and the problem of theodicy has been completed for publication, while developing a model of theology as semiotic phenomenology of the invisible. 3. In the context of her postdoctoral project on conscience as a means of self-disclosure, she has focused on: a) an analysis of classical texts (and secondary literature) that testify to conscience, especially by Luther, Shakespeare, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Levinas and Ricoeur. b) An exploration of contemporary theories of emotion, memory and personal identity. c) An investigation of different paradigms of a relational ontology of the self, also in preparation of a conference on this issue. 4. She has worked on the application for a future project on “Trust, Conflict, Recognition” (sponsored by Velux Fonden, in cooperation with Arne Grøn, Anne-Marie Pahuus and Gry Ardal Christensen) and written an article on trust as fiducia and the problem of evil.
