Annual report ICES 2013 ICES board The Board members during 2013 are listed in appendix A. The Work group leaders during 2013 are listed in appendix B.

Participants During the year ICES has increased its number of participants by 4 on silver level and 1 on bronze level. Three of the new silver level companies are also members of iPack. A generous support from the ICT platform enabled ICES to invite the iPack members to a one year participation and the companies that accepted were Sweden Water Purification, Imsys and Ambigua Medito. In addition Tobii joined on Bronze level and Electrolux on Silver level. ICES has also initiated discussions with the STH school of KTH, an active member of iPACK. The total number of ICES company members 2013-12-31 is now 24.

Goals On August 22nd ICES had a strategy conference with its Gold and Silver participants to review, discuss and update our goals in order to reach our vision: “A flourishing eco-system for industry and academia excelling in embedded systems research, education and innovation.” The strategy conference gathered about 15 persons and we had a very lively and useful discussion in which we scrutinized all present goals. The goal evaluation summary as of August 2013 is available as appendix C. The short term goals until 2014 have been updated and will be published on our website. One goal that should be revised is to strive to get the market leaders within different industry domains as participating companies rather than trying to have as many members as possible. In our future work we will place increased emphasis on supporting focus groups and we will investigate how ICES can support demonstrator projects. Another outcome of the strategy conference was to evaluate the performance if ICES. The present participating companies have been approached with a survey to get feedback on their satisfaction and how we can improve further. The result will be summarized in the beginning of 2014.

Students During 2013 the first group of students (some 20) finalized their studies in the Embedded Systems master program of KTH, a program that was initiated by ICES, and that is now implemented in collaboration by the ICT, ITM, EES and CSC schools of KTH. The second team of students successfully finalized their large project course in collaboration with Micronic, Interfleet and KTH transport labs. As a result of the program, KTH provides engineers directly skilled in embedded systems, and opportunities for internships, master thesis, and student projects in this area. ICES gave a general presentation to the first year Embedded Masters students August 29th at the first introduction meeting with the course responsible Johnny Öberg. ICES has participated all three years in order to meet all new students in Embedded Systems. ICES has arranged three company-student meetings primarily for Embedded System students:  13 September, Prevas.  14 October, MathWorks.

18 November, Stoneridge Electronics.

ICES researchers were involved in two international summer schools:  Summer School on Cyber-Physical Systems in Grenoble, France. Speakers include ICES director Martin Törngren.  KTH Summer school on Embedded systems: -Tera/Artist International Summer School on Embedded System Design, Aix-les-Bains, France. Speakers include prof Karl-Henrik Johansson, board member of ICES This year ICES companies joined in the general Exjobbsmässa in Kista October 10th.

Seminars, workshops, conference, courses ICES arranged the following meetings  5 March: Breakfast seminar with the theme Research within Embedded Systems at KTH. Representative research at the schools ICT, ITM, CSC and EES was presented.  14 June: ICES full day Safety Seminar - Safety Issues with Automation in Västerås  23 August: Complexity and Complex Systems & Safe Nuclear Power - a joint INCOSE/ICES Seminar  5-6 November: The 8th annual Embedded Conference Scandinavia 2013. ICES hosted its own session on Model based design. The room managing 80 person was overcrowded and the spectators were lining the walls.  2 December: IVA and ICES made a joint seminar at IVA with the title ”Dagens verkstadsföretag är i IT-branschen – nu tar de nästa steg!”. About 80 persons attended and the speakers included top management at Scania, Ericsson, Assa Abloy as well as representatives from consulting companies. ICES was represented by director Martin Törngren and board chairman Tor Ericson. The event was very successful.  3 December: “2nd European Conference on Interoperability for Embedded Systems Development Environments” with about 60 partitipants, was organized in collaboration among several large European research projects and with organizational support from ICES. This conference provided a forum for exchange of ideas among stakeholders representing end-users, tool and platform providers, and standardization bodies, across embedded systems and various IT system domains (ALM and PDM/PLM). The conference had the status as the ARTEMIS technology conference and was very successful.

Marketing ICES new homepage opened on May 13 and is located at our normal web address http://www.ices.kth.se. The new layout and maintenance functionality has proven to facilitate our work; for example, registration for events can be done directly on the web and web page editing is now much easier. During the year ICES has sent 5 Newsletters to its subscribers. We presently reach about 1300 subscribers across both academia and companies. ICES director Martin Törngren together with Prof Karl-Henrik Johansson of the ACCESScentre described the role of Cyber-physical systems and related KTH activities in an article in Elektroniktidningen.

Network KTH management has initiated strategic collaboration discussions with large industrial partners. The ICES network has been directly involved and supported networking in discussions with Scania and SAAB. The meetings addressed research and development priorities, educational needs, and ways of collaboration. The aim with the ICES focus groups is to gather those with deep interest in the selected theme, initiate a first brain-storming meeting to elicit problems/topics of mutual interest and how the group can deal with them. This could include follow-up meetings, initiation of follow-up seminars, defining case studying and benchmarking exercises, initiating joint projects, producing material such as problem formulations and white papers, etc. - The Security, Safety, Robustness and Diagnostics Focus Group headed by Fredrik Asplund is continuing its work with regular activity. The main event was the 14 June workshop mentioned under seminars. - The Focus groups with R&D managers from ICES companies was started 29 January at KTH with an initial meeting involving vicerektor Prof Margareta Norell Bergendahl. A second meeting focused on Innovation with a presentation by Prof Mats Magnusson of KTH May 22. The third meeting was held 13 November with a presentation by Dr. Annika Steiber regarding Innovative Organisations, among other things providing insights from Google. The following ICES focus groups are starting up, but have not reached a regular activity yet.  Realtime Embedded Systems headed by Ingo Sander.  Wireless headed by Carlo Fischione.  Testing Embedded Systems headed by Karl Meinke.  Architectures for Autonomous systems, headed by Sagar Behere.

Research ICES has been participating in the Vinnova call for strategic innovation and research programs (so called SIO-programs). There were many initiatives, and after some consideration, ICES decided to support the following two: - “Innovation enabled by Information and Communication Technologies”: This agenda was developed in cooperation with several companies, institutes and universities (led by Ericsson and SICS). The agenda was submitted to Vinnova on April 15 and was supplemented with a programme specification for Innovation Enablers by ICT detailing the suggested research programme. The suggested programme was rejected by Vinnova; while the area is of high strategic importance to Sweden, Vinnova would like to see more of renewal with regard to participants and efforts. - Swedish software innovation agenda, submitted to Vinnova in August 2013, and to the first step of a subsequent Innovation program, submitted in Nov. 2013. According to an agreement with KTH, ICES provides for KTH’s representation in the ARTEMIS Industrial Association. This year Stockholm hosted the ARTEMIS/ITEA2 cosummit Dec. 4-5. The 6th edition of the annual co-summit had almost 700 participants from industry, academia and public authorities from all over Europe. The Co-summit – organised by ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking on embedded systems and ITEA, the EUREKA Cluster on software-intensive systems and services – featured in particular a project exhibition with representatives from more than 80 European leading R&D&I projects, (several with KTH participation) – a useful time for embedded systems networking at the European level.
