AFTER YOUR SURGERY PRECAUTIONS

• You can bathe or shower starting the day after your surgery. However, avoid getting water or soap directly in your eyes (2 weeks). • Tilt your head back to wash your hair (2 weeks). Wait before applying chemical products (hair colour, per­ manent) to your hair (2 weeks).

IMPORTANT You must arrange for someone to accompany you home, the day of your operation and of your postoperative visit, since you will not be able to drive.

• Gently dab the contour of your eyes with a soft tissue to remove any fluid or residue deposits. However, wait before applying makeup (mascara, liner, eyeshadow) to your eyelids (2 weeks).

Driving a vehicle

• Men can shave the day after surgery.

During your postoperative follow-ups, eye care professionals will assess your vision and tell you when you can expect to regain the visual acuity necessary to meet the Société de l’assurance auto­ mobile du Québec standards.

ACTIVITIES

You can resume most of your daily activities the day after your surgery. You can read, watch TV, go for a walk and cook. Work In most cases, you can return to work the day after your surgery, or as soon as you feel that your vision is ade­ quate to resume your daily activities. However, if you work in a dusty envi­ ronment that carries a risk of infection or injury to the eye, it is advisable to wait 2 weeks after your surgery before resuming your activities. If necessary, you can be issued a letter justifying your time off work.

You may not drive your vehicle during the first 24 hours after your surgery. If you drive a motorcycle, you must wait 2 weeks; wearing of a full face helmet is strongly recommended.

Travel You can travel 2 weeks after your surgery. However, for certain types of travel (out of the country, by the sea, etc.), it is pre­ ferable to wait until after your one-month postoperative follow-up. That way it will be easier to send you to your optometrist or ophthalmologist if a complication arises. EXPOSURE TO THE SUN

For your comfort, we recommend that you wear sunglasses after the surgery, especially if you are sensitive to light.

MEDICATION

PROTECTIVE EYE SHIELD

Unless otherwise indicated, you should continue taking all your medication (including drops for the treatment of glaucoma, as needed).

You will be given a protective eye shield after your surgery. You must wear it while sleeping (for 7 conse­ cutive nights).

If you experience a headache after surgery, you can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) tablets.

We also recommend that you wear the eye shield during the day if you are concerned about rubbing your eyes.

ARTIFICIAL TEARS

EYEGLASSES

It is normal to feel a slight sensation of a foreign body after the operation. Applying artificial tears (4-6 times/day) can help relieve the discomfort.

Following your surgery, we recommend that you visit your optometrist annually for a complete eye examination. Your eyeglasses should be changed 4 to 6 weeks after surgery on your 2nd eye. In the meantime, you can either remove the lens from the frame on the side of the operated eye or forego eyeglasses and function with the operated eye only. Your optometrist is the best placed professional to advise you on the right choice of ophthalmic lenses for you after surgery. Wearing tinted lenses and/or progressive eyeglasses with an antireflective coating is advised.
