MCpl Downey leaves November 5 and the race itself begins November 15. Three teams – one from the UK, one from the US and a joint Canadian/Australian team – will race the 336 kilometres from 87 degrees south latitude to the South Pole. The race will be run over 16 days. Each team member will tow a pulk, a kind of sled, with 160 pounds of food and fuel. Besides the four wounded soldiers, teams include experienced Antarctic guides and a celebrity participant. The Canada/Australia team will be joined by actor Dominic West from the TV series “The Wire.” The US team has Swedish actor Alex Skarsgard and the UK team will be accompanied by Prince Harry (“the big one,”

MCpl Downey says). The celebrity participants help draw attention to the race, but MCpl Downey says when the cameras show up the celebs take a back seat to wounded soldiers. “They could easily use this to promote themselves, but that’s not why they’re there,” he said. Participants will camp along the route though an Icelandic support company, Arctic Trucks, will be within a few hours’ drive of all the teams. Medical support will also be on hand if needed. All funds raised will go directly to helping wounded soldiers, as the costs of the expedition have been covered by corporate sponsors. Please see our feature on MCpl Downey on page 4.

Many years ago, when I wore the uniform, I was the kind of guy who was desperately trying to find a nametag or some other accoutrement just before heading out onto the parade square. I tend to misplace things, and all the various insignia were almost too much for my tiny brain to keep track of. For someone like me, I thought a good system would be for recruits’ uniforms to be heavy on the bling. With time in, promotions and notable achievements over a career, one could earn the privilege of taking some insignia down. While a Private’s uniform would be festooned in gold and brass, a highranking highly-honoured member would wear comfy grey sweats and a hockey sweater. Of course, the whole scheme would have

backfired on me. I retired as a Sergeant with only my CD (and first clasp) to tell the story of my distinguished career. I would have gone out of the Forces almost as heavily-laden as when I went in. Several members were recognized at the quarterly Honours and Awards ceremony last week, and they deserve to display their achievements with pride. The medals and decorations awarded – CDs, CD1s, a General Campaign Star bar and a Special Service Medal – convey gratitude for the dedication it takes to serve and to go where one is needed. Certificates of Appreciation, Commendations and Awards of Excellence are specific recognition of achievements and contributions to the Defence Team’s mission. Photos are on pages

MPs, RCMP Share Resources Jeff Gaye RCMP personnel from all over northern Alberta were at 11 Military Police (MP) Flight last week to recertify their Taser qualifications. It’s all part of a spirit of cooperation among police departments says Cpl Jason Riddolls, training officer of 11 MP Flight. “They have to re-qualify every year on the Taser and other equipment,” Cpl Riddolls said, “but they don’t have the same training facilities we have.” It’s part of a two-way street that involves the MPs and various RCMP detachments. Sometimes, said Cpl Riddolls, the MPs will need to process a suspected impaired driver but might not have a qualified breathalyzer operator available.

“We’ll sometimes ask the RCMP if they have a breath tech available,” he said. Because it is important for breathalyzer testing to be conducted promptly, the MPs might request help from the Cold Lake detachment or as far away as Bonnyville. The RCMP will ask the MPs for similar help when needed. The RCMP also ask the MPs to assist them on routine walk-throughs in downtown clubs, especially during Maple Flag when there are a lot of international military personnel in Cold Lake, Cpl Riddolls said. The Taser training last week involved technical aspects of operating the weapon as well as rehearsing different scenarios where the Taser might be used. Cpl Riddolls said

sharing the training facility with the RCMP makes sense for all concerned. “We’re all federal

officers. We have a different mandate but we all deal with the Alberta Traffic Act and the Criminal Code.

Cooperating saves money and it saves on manpower,” Cpl Riddolls said. “All police forces are

trying to save money, and by working together where we can, we know we’ve got each other’s back.”

Jeff Gaye Master Corporal Chris Downey has a promise to keep, and he will walk to the South Pole to live up to his word. MCpl Downey’s close friend Petty Officer Second Class Douglas Craig Blake was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2010. MCpl Downey was seriously injured by the blast and he is convinced that PO2 Blake, by taking the worst of it, saved his life. MCpl Downey was conscious when he was evacuated to Kandahar Airfield, where he underwent emergency surgery. His first memory after that is awakening three days later in a hospital in Germany, where he learned the extent of his injuries: he had lost his right eye, as well as most of his teeth, gums and much of his jaw; his wrist was severely fractured; he had suffered two aneurysms and a collapsed lung; he had lacerations, burns and shrapnel in most of his face, his right side and his arms and legs; his right ear was almost severed off and his right hand was shattered. “That’s most of it. Most of what I can remember, anyway,” he says. At the same time, he learned that Craig Blake hadn’t survived the explosion. “That’s where I made the promise that has led me to everything I’ve done since,” MCpl Downey says. “I promised Craig that I would not waste a minute of the gift he’d given me.” In August 2012, MCpl Downey received an e-mail from Soldier On, an organization that encourages ill and injured service members and veterans to accept

their “new normal” by adopting an active lifestyle. The e-mail called for volunteers to participate in an Antarctic race under the auspices of Walking With The Wounded (WWTW), a UK-based charity for injured soldiers. “Right off the top it says they’re looking for wounded soldiers to walk 336 kilometres at minus40 degree temperatures, and you’re reading this and you’re like: why not?” MCpl Downey said. “It sounds miserable, but I want to do this!” After a rigorous screening involving lengthy forms and several interviews, three Canadians were invited to participate with British, Australian and American candidates on a three-week exercise in Iceland. Two Canadians were selected for the Commonwealth team (“Team Soldier On”), along with two Australians. The team will race against an American team and a British team, starting at the 87th south parallel and finishing at the South Pole. The race starts November 15 and will take 16 days to complete. MCpl Downey is inspired by his team and his competitors, and hopes he can inspire others in turn. “There’s three reasons why I wanted to participate,” he said. “Not in any order of importance, but firstly it’s an opportunity for myself. I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie and a bit of an adventure kind of guy so this was way up there on my list.”

Training in Iceland, March 2013. “The second reason is that promise to Craig. So there’s no way I could say no to any opportunity, I have to do it. It’s a chance to truly live it to the max.” “And the third one,” he said, “is the hope to inspire at least one person. Being part of this has got my story spread out all over the world instead of just locally, so there’s more chance of inspiring at least one person to come out of their shell or open the door, go outside, just know that there’s way more out there than what they think.” MCpl Downey has already derived unexpected benefits from the project. When he came back from Afghanistan he may have looked like the same person, but inside, he says, he was not the same at all. “The Chris that left for overseas did not come back. It’s just the way it is,” he said. Throughout this past year of training and preparation, “pieces of me have been coming back. And you can’t put a value on that. It’s not something I expected or something I planned for but it’s massive. There’s no way you can repay

MCpl Chris Downey

Blake,

that or even express how important and how amazing it’s been for me to get those pieces back.” “And that’s going to carry me forever now.” Participants are using the race to raise funds for WWTW and its programs. “It’s important for everybody to know that none of the funds raised go to the actual expedition,” MCpl Downey says. “That’s been covered by corporate sponsors.” The title sponsor, UKbased finance company Virgin Money, has given each participant a website through its charitable foundation Virgin Money Giving. Through their websites, participants can establish their own fundraising goals and make their own appeals to donors.

For each 100 British pounds raised, a participant can dedicate or “name” a kilometre of the race. MCpl Downey’s goal is to raise £15,800. “I chose that amount because we lost 158 men and women in the Afghanistan conflict so I’m trying to have one kilometre named for every single one of them,” he said. “After that – because I will reach my goal – the kilometres will be for all the wounded and all the ones that saved the wounded. Because every one of us that was wounded were saved by people on the ground.” “That’s why I chose that number,” he said, “and that’s the entire plan – minus the last kilometre.” “The last kilometre is mine and Craig’s.”

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 3 Don`t forget to turn your clocks back one hour. This is a good time to check your smoke detector and change the batteries.

Jessica Fisher, Community Recreation Coordinator Personnel Support Programs (PSP) Recreation Department and the Community Council held a fall event at the Mackenzie Arts and Community Centre on Saturday, October 19. Many families came out to participate in the day of festive fun. There was a variety of crafts for all ages to enjoy, as well as decorating some yummy cupcakes into a ghoul or goblin of their choice. Families had an opportunity to show off their creativity and carving skills with our pumpkin carving contest, which turned out to be a whole lot of fun!

It was great to see so many families enjoy the carving and decorating and working as a team. There was a wide variety of pumpkins to judge from spooky, to funny and some very creative ones, too! Choosing just three winning pumpkins was a difficult decision and we would like to thank everyone who participated. The First

Prize winner for the spookiest pumpkin was the Hoy family. The Second Prize winner for the most creative pumpkin was the Naugler family. The Third Prize winner for the fun pumpkin was the Patterson family. The Community Council and PSP Recreation Department would like to congratulate all families

who won. We would also like to remind everyone living in the Residential Housing Units (RHUs) that the Community Council and Recreation Department will be driving through the 4 Wing Community to judge the spookiest and most creatively decorated RHUs on the evening of October 30. Get your spook on!

When we think of addictions, we typically think about drug addicts, alcoholics or smokers. But it’s important to recognize that addictions extend far beyond these “usual suspects.” Though it’s sometimes harder to understand, people can and do become addicted to gambling, gaming and even the internet. Why is this sometimes hard to understand? It’s because we often attribute addictions to substances and since the last three don’t involve substances, how addiction occurs is widely misunderstood. Think Fire Prevention on Hallowe’en 4 Wing Fire Department The 4 Wing Fire Department and the National Fire Protection Association remind parents and children that it’s important to think of fire safety at Hallowe’en. These safety tips will help make Hallowe’en fun, spooky and safe: • When choosing a

costume, stay away from billowing or long trailing fabric. If children are wearing masks, make sure the eye holes are big enough that they can see out. • Provide children with flashlights or glow sticks for lighting. • Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these

and other decorations away from all open flames and heat sources including light bulbs and heaters. • It is safest to use a flashlight or batteryoperated candle in a jacko’-lantern. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Watch children at all times when candles are lit. When lighting candles in a jack-o’-lantern, use

long fireplace matches or a utility lighter. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-ortreaters, doorsteps and walkways. • Remember to keep doorways clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes. • Tell children to stay away from open

flames. Be sure they know treaters, whose costumes how to stop, drop and roll may brush against the if their clothing catches lighting. fire. • If your children • Use flashlights go to Hallowe’en parties instead of candles at others’ homes, have or torchlights when them look for a way out decorating walkways of a home and plan how or yards.
