BGC Contracting’s long standing relationship commenced with Cliffs Natural Resources in February 2004 as haulage contractor for their Koolyanobbing project located in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. In 2007 BGC went on to secure the mining contract which was again renewed in 2015 for a further 7 years. This is scheduled for completion in December 2022 with the contract value in the region of $2.5 billion. The scope of works is to provide Cliffs Natural Resources the full range of mining services for the operation including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, dumping, crushing, screening and train load-out of approximately 26 million bcm

of ore and waste per annum from mines within the Koolyanobbing, Windarling and Mount Jackson regions in WA. Ore is hauled utilising road trains from Windarling and Mount Jackson to Koolyanobbing where it is crushed, screened and loaded on to trains at a rate of approximately 11 million tonnes a year. Atlas Iron Another of BGC Contracting’s long standing relationships is with Altas Iron. BGC has completed drilling, blasting and mining contracts at Atlas’ Wodgina iron ore project near Port Hedland. BGC’s relationship with Atlas has been a mutually beneficial one as it has seen the two companies significantly grow their businesses together over the years. Testament to the strength of BGC’s existing relationship with Atlas, BGC was also awarded their second major greenfield mining project with Atlas at Mt. Webber. The scope of work consists of development work, mining, and crushing and screening operations at Atlas’ Mt Webber mine located near Marble Bar in the Pilbara region. The project value is in the order of $300 million with mining production to be 6mtpa over a period of 5 years. Process Minerals International Not far from Mt Webber is another BGC Contracting project recently completed in the Pilbara Region. The Spinifex Ridge iron ore project which is also located near Marble Bar. The project required conventional open pit mining techniques including pre-stripping topsoil, ramp construction, equipment maintenance, drilling, blasting and load and haul of direct shipping iron ore to the run of mine (ROM) and waste to the dump. BGC’s involvement in Spinifex Ridge has developed from its initial project scope right through to life of mine completion. What also makes this project unique in nature is that it was managed by BGC over the entire project life cycle via two different mine owners, having originally been owned by Moly Mines, followed by eventual ownership by Process Minerals International.

Contract Mining Arrium

Gold

In South Australia, BGC Contracting has been mining iron ore for Arrium Limited at the South Middleback Ranges (SMR) operation under a 5-year contract producing both magnetite and hematite. The scope of work includes drilling, blasting, extraction, haulage, crusher feed and train loading.

BGC Contracting performed the drilling, blasting and mining at the Plutonic and Lawlers operations in the Murchison region of WA for former owner Barrick Gold. BGC was also awarded the mining, drill and blast contract for Newmont Mining at its Jundee project in the Yandal Goldfields of WA and the mining pre-strip, drilling and blasting contract for BGM Management at the Boddington Gold project in WA’s South-West.

The successful relationship at SMR led Arrium to award BGC another contract in SA in early 2014, this time to reopen and conduct mining at the historic Iron Knob iron ore mine near Whyalla, scheduled for completion in October 2017. The Iron Knob operations will consist of the Princess Pits (east and west) and the historical Monarch Pit, which started operating in the late 1800’s and which is widely accepted to be the origin of iron ore mining in Australia. Mt. Gibson BGC Contracting performed the mining (59 million bcm), drilling, blasting and services for Mt Gibson Iron at its Koolan Island project, off WA’s Kimberley coast. BHP Billiton For BHP Billiton, BGC Contracting completed the mining, crushing and train loading at the Jimblebar project and mining pre-strip at the Orebody 18 project.
