ANCHORAGE GOLF COURSE Master Plan Presentation

FORREST RICHARDSON, ASGCA

MASTER PLANNING PROCESS • Phase 1: Initial Evaluation & Assessment (September 2008)

• Phase 2: Public Forum & Dialogue (December 2008 • Phase 3: Secondary On-site Evaluation (September 2010) • Phase 3: Master Plan Documentation (December 2010)

A Master Plan is a roadmap that allows decisions to be made which will be efficient and effective for the long term

How golf in America has changed since the 1960s • Number of tee boxes increase from three to five+ • Tees are no longer gender-based • Higher level of turf care — and complexity • Today’s turf faces more stresses — play, trees, etc. • Bunkers: More, better & the pursuit of consistency • More money is spent on golf today • Greens are much faster • Stroke play is in — Match play is out • Competition – America continues to raise the bar • Construction is now considered a science

The components of a golf course do not last forever Greens

Life Cycle Thoughts • Despite the costs at stake, we often wait for components to wear out rather than planning ahead

Life Cycle Thoughts • Despite the costs at stake, we often wait for components to wear out rather than planning ahead • In reality, it is possible to plan and budget for necessary improvements — and we maintain quality playing conditions and healthy turf — avoiding costly failures

Life Cycle Thoughts • Despite the costs at stake, we often wait for components to wear out rather than planning ahead • In reality, it is possible to plan and budget for necessary improvements — and we maintain quality playing conditions and healthy turf — avoiding costly failures • Golf courses change!

Life Cycle Thoughts • Despite the costs at stake, we often wait for components to wear out rather than planning ahead • In reality, it is possible to plan and budget for necessary improvements — and we maintain quality playing conditions and healthy turf — avoiding costly failures • Golf courses change! • The Master Planning Process is a key to planning, budgeting and managing change

The long range goal is to preserve the asset, improve the golf course and have a plan instead of winging it
