Allergan, Inc. has partnered with fashion designer Kara Saun (“Project Runway”) and GenArt Fresh Faces in Fashion on a health education campaign called “Project: Sweat Free,” designed to raise awareness about excessive underarm sweating, the effect that it can have on women’s fashion choices, and available treatment options that can help women manage their underarm sweat. Everyone sweats. Sweating is our body’s way of regulating temperature and cooling itself. But millions of people sweat so much that it actually interferes with their daily activities. Severe underarm sweating is a medical condition called severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis occurs when overactive sweat glands produce sweat that exceeds the body’s normal requirements for cooling, sometimes up to four or five times what is needed.2 Research has found that nearly one million women in the United States suffer from severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis,1 and to make matters worse for women, our society seems to find excessive sweating less acceptable for women than for men. For anyone that suffers from it, extreme sweating can be embarrassing and uncomfortable and even anxiety-inducing. Still, many people that sweat excessively do not even realize that they have a treatable medical condition, or they are too embarrassed to talk to a physician about it, allowing their excessive sweating to go undiagnosed and untreated.

I’ve lost some weight but I still can’t wear fitted clothes because my sweat marks will show if my shirt isn’t oversized. – Jana, 27, Jacksonville I drive to work with a paper towels stuffed in my armpits and the cold air on full blast, even in the winter. – Melissa, 23, Ogden, Utah

I never splurge on nice clothes for myself because I know they’ll be ruined after one or two wearings. – Danielle, 30, Nashville

For

women with excessive underarm sweating, the most common complaint is that they do not have the freedom to wear the clothes

that they would like to wear, and that they must dress to accommodate their sweating. For example, they wear only black or dark colors so that sweat stains don’t show, avoid silk at all costs, dress in loose clothing, and are reluctant to buy fashionable clothes because they could be ruined after one wearing. For people who sweat excessively, wardrobe choices can be affected by the desire to not show underarm sweat stains. The good news is that excessive underarm sweating can be treated by a visit to an experienced dermatologist, who can discuss treatment options that may vary according to the severity of the condition. One highly effective, FDA-approved treatment for severe underarm sweating, not adequately managed by topical agents, is BOTOX® (Botulinum Toxin Type A). BOTOX® injections help control severe underarm sweating by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops. Treatment with BOTOX® is a relatively quick and straightforward

procedure and results in a significant reduction in underarm sweating within four weeks of the first treatment. Results have been shown to be highly effective for up to six months. In the US today, more than 85% of managed healthcare lives have coverage for hyperhidrosis. You can work with your physician to facilitate the reimbursement process. If you feel that excessive underarm sweating is affecting your daily activities, from wardrobe choices to recreational activities, visit a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and to discuss appropriate treatment options. Visit ProjectSweatFree.com for further information about severe underarm sweating and to find a dermatologist near you to discuss appropriate treatment options.

Find out your Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS) measure The HDSS is a four-point scale designed to assess the severity of severe underarm sweating based on the extent of sweating-related impairment of daily activities. Check next to the score that best describes your severity.

My severe sweating is never noticeable and never interferes with my daily activities IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION* You should not be treated with BOTOX® if you have an infection at the injection site or are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients. Serious allergic reactions and cardiac events have been rarely reported. If you think you’re having an allergic reaction or other unusual symptoms, such as difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, call your doctor immediately. Side effects include injection-site pain and bleeding, non-underarm sweating, infection, sore throat, flu, headache, fever, neck or back pain, itching or anxiety. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.
