400 women attended The Medical Center’s A Day Just for Women Women’s Conference on September 13, to hear inspirational speakers, take advantage of free health screenings, and relax with soothing massages. In addition, several booth exhibits presented information on a variety of topics of interest to women while other booths provided a fun shopping experience. The 15th annual Women’s Conference was held at the Knicely Conference Center in Bowling Green. Featured speakers were Pamela Peeke, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., Chief Correspondent for Discovery Health TV. Dr. Peeke is an author, spokesperson for American College of Sports Medicine, and professor at University of Maryland, Dr. Peeke spoke about the importance of the mind and body connection, and the science behind how we can take control of our health by changing our attitudes and behaviors. Grace Lichtenstein, M.S., a professional trainer and life coach, presented Turn Down the HEAT, which focused on conflict management

and ways to effectively communicate with others in a professional and productive manner. Education is the key to empowering women to make healthy lifestyle changes and A Day Just for Women provides them with the tools and information needed to make positive changes. Plans are already underway for next year’s A Day Just for Women, which promises to be even bigger and better than this year. Seasonal Influenza Protection

Don’t get caught without the shot! Why do we stress the importance of getting the flu shot each year? Influenza viruses

are always changing and immunity does wane over time. Each year the United States Food and Drug Administration chooses certain flu viruses for inclusion in the seasonal flu vaccine based upon recommendations from the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Their goal is to try and match the viruses in the flu vaccine to those most likely to cause the illnesses during the upcoming flu season. The 2012–2013 flu vaccine will protect against the following influenza viruses: influenza A (H1N1) virus, influenza A (H3N2) virus, and influenza B virus. What is the flu? Influenza (flu) is a virus that can cause mild to severe respiratory illness that is contagious and can lead to death. Older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions are at high risk for serious flu complications. So how did we do? CHC’s overall influenza vaccination rate for 2011–2012 was 84%. While the 9% increase is encouraging, our goal is to reach 90%, which is The Joint Commission’s expectation. In fact, The Joint Commission expects all hospitals to achieve an influenza vaccination participation rate of 90% by 2020! Why do CHC employees choose to not receive the flu vaccine? The number one reason given by our employees for not receiving the vaccine was “they don’t think they need it.” Why would a healthcare worker think they don’t need the flu vaccine? don't think I need it 23% This question has many people puzzled. Given the nature of our work, it would never had the flu 10% appear we would be the first in line to better protect our patients and families. However, this is not the case. As a never had the shot 18% result, there are healthcare employers 0% 5% 10% 15% 20% 25% who mandate their employees receive the flu vaccine. In addition, The Joint Commission and CDC have strongly voiced their opinion for all healthcare workers to receive the vaccine. It is the number one thing that we can do to prevent the spread of the flu, and it really is our professional responsibility. How can we break through these barriers? Currently, CHC has not mandated the flu vaccine for employees. We believe the best way to increase our percentages is through education, persistence and making it easier to get the vaccine. This year we will start the Traveling Flu Cart earlier and will set up specific dates and times to visit departments and areas of the organization. It is our goal to achieve 90% participation, and it will require everyone’s commitment. Beginning January 2013, we will be required to report our influenza vaccination participation rate to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). This information will be publicly available and will be used for comparison purposes to other hospitals. All the more reason to reach the 90% participation rate as quickly as we can — let’s make this happen! Vicki Weaver, RN Director, CHC Employee Health Services
