INTRODUCTION

Hello and welcome to my first book of guitar riffs in the style of the great blues/rock guitarists. Not an easy subject to dive into without the sense of drowning! There are so many guitar players and every guitarist you meet has their own favourites. As I was trying to decide which players to include my list kept getting longer and longer so it was a bit like pointing at a map with my eyes closed and just going for it. The guitar players I’ve chosen for this first volume have been with me most of my life and their music has played a great part in my listening. Their influence is huge and not just on guitar players. Rather than go into the life of each player I think the riffs and the tracks that influenced them should be the main focus of this book. I’ve included a brief discography of each guitarist at the end of this introduction. Wikipedia is becoming such a source of information that I would recommend the reader seek out the biographical material available there plus the information on the original band websites. This CD/book is not really for beginners and some of the technique is quite demanding. My aim has been to capture the essence of each player in my original riff and provide new duo material for you to work with. The playalong track can be used by you alone or in a duo or class situation. My initial aim was to just give material for lead players but I soon realized that the rhythm part is just as important. Also there is much that can be learned from studying the rhythm style of these guitarists. Do check out the original album tracks and use the riffs to develop your own individual style. Good luck. THE GUITAR PLAYERS

Carlos Santana (Santana) An instantly recognizable style bringing bluesy legato lines to an intense latin backing. Carlos Santana has very clean technique and plays clear blues lines over often montuno-like two-chord sequences. His use of unison bends and sustained distortion give Santana a unique sound.

Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) One of the first obviously metal guitarists, Tony Iommi plays melodically simple lines mostly based on pentatonic scales. His enthusiastic use of distortion sounds fresh even today – when he first used it not many guitar players used distortion all the time as has become the norm from that time on.

Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) Heavily blues influenced, Jimmy Page brought a power to his playing that still sounds great. The early Led Zeppelin used many standard blues ideas in their approach but took it and made it their own. Rock music moved forward with this material; driven by powerful riffs and a huge sound.

Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple) Another riff-driven band fronted by a great guitar player, Deep Purple found in Ritchie Blackmore a player who could play driving riffs and improvise extended solos that could whip up an audience. His use of advanced techniques and a knowledge of scales give his solos and riffs a freshness that make Deep Purple stand out from the rest.

Eric Clapton (Cream) Eric Clapton was immersed in the blues sound and absorbed it for years. His playing expresses this and during the Cream years his soloing came to fruition with the support of great bass-playing and writing from Jack Bruce. Eric’s fluid playing sounds so easy but takes much practice to become so smooth. Another exponent of extended solos he seems inundated with fresh ideas that flow from one to the next.

Paul Kossoff (Free) A hugely individual guitar sound gives Paul Kossoff a special place in this collection. His wonderful soulful playing and ability to play simple chords that fit perfectly with the song. Very recognizable riffs and long sustained notes along with a singing vibrato set him apart in a period that was becoming increasingly overproduced and clinical.
