Introduction DLibrary has been established for over 10 years and in that time has become a definitive resource for retail images. All of Australia’s largest Supermarket and Liquor retailers utilise our service. DLibrary offers its customers a single, secure, centralised repository for their images, allowing retailers fast and reliable access. We create, distribute and store digital images via an industry standard, public, on-line library for promotional material such as catalogues, press and TV campaigns.

DLibrary manages these digital images for many organisations whose marketing strategies demand the creation and distribution of thousands of different images. To maintain the quality of these digital images we guarantee the quality from input to output. We adhere to strict guidelines set down by the retail advertising industry regarding image format, product angle, photographic lighting, sharpening and resolution.

2D & 3D TIFF Image Specifications These image specifications outline what is input into DLibrary. They are very important as they meet the quality standards required for delivering digital images to our customers.

Images used for any form of printing require a high resolution in order to achieve an acceptable viewing result. Given the time, effort and cost of commercial printing it is vital the image quality meets the expectations of the audience. An image of high resolution quality will maintain its contrast, clarity and sharpness.

DLibrary stores clear, sharp and clean images to the following Image Specification Standards: • Image Resolution: 300 dpi (minimum) • Canvas size: 29cm (on longest edge) • Image size: 28cm (on longest edge) • Crop size: within 5mm of image (maximum) • A Simplified Contour Clipping Path must be Applied • Colour space: RGB • ICC embedded input profile: ColorMatch RGB • No Sharpening applied to RGB image • File type: Photoshop TIFF saved with

2D & 3D TIFF Download Formats 2D & 3D TIFF images stored to DLibrary’s Image Specifications allows for the greatest flexibility when the image is downloaded. Rather than having to store different formats of an image our system allows for the image to be “re-purposed” on-the-fly at the beginning of the download process. This means that a single high resolution TIFF image @ 300 DPI can be automatically re-purposed to the following download formats:

Client Supplied Rendered/CAD Images In recent years there has been a trend by clients towards illustrated imagery or ‘rendered’ photography. These types of creative elements can greatly enhance a products appearance however, thought must be given to the purpose for which it will be used.

DLibrary will accept client supplied ‘rendered’ imagery* on the understanding that they comply, in full, to our Image Specification Standards as outlined earlier in this document.

With print being one of the main end-uses for output from DLibrary, some extra care should be taken when supplying ‘rendered’ images to allow for printing processes. Areas such as colour saturation, brightness and sharpening need particular attention. If ignored the reproductive quality of this type of image could be compromised.

If a client is unsure on how their rendered image will reproduce in print a DLibrary Quality Control Proof can be produced, at cost to the client, for approval prior to accepting the image for up-loading into DLibrary.

Rendered imagery must also comply with our accepted photographic angles, both 2D and 3D, or whichever may apply, refer to the Photographic Angles section later in this document.

Client Supplied Rendered/CAD Images These sample images highlight some common areas of concern with client supplied rendered imagery.

Supplied rendered images must have an applied clipping path. DLibrary does not store drop-shadows.

Ensure that rendered images are supplied to DLibrary 29cm on their longest edge and are 300 dpi. nine

Supplied rendered images must take colour saturation, sharpness and brightness into consideration and be supplied as RGB.

Rendered images must comply to DLibrary’s 2D & 3D photographic angles, whichever may apply.

Product Samples for Photography Product samples being supplied to DLibrary for photography should be delivered in pristine condition. It is recommended that an evaluation of multiple selections of a product be undertaken and the samples chosen truly reflect the product in the best possible way. A poor sample will inevitably mean a poor result.

If the sample being supplied for photography is not true to the original product and is found to be defective, damaged or inferior it will need to be replaced by the client. A DLibrary representative will contact the customer outlining the issue and offer them to re-supply the sample or supply a quote for retouching.* Alternatively and where appropriate to do so, DLibrary can offer to purchase the product and charge a fee on the customers behalf. DLibrary takes no responsibility for products that are damaged while in transit to our studios.

If you are unsure on how to supply your sample to photography your nearest DLibrary representative will be able to assist and advise accordingly.

Samples should have:

In addition and to assist us in producing the best possible result, it is an advantage to supply ‘flat-packs’ for cartons and boxes, this is particularly important when supplying freezer/frozen samples. Labels should also be as square as possible on the product sample being photographed.

To increase the life-span of products featuring in DLibrary, it is highly recommended that samples provided contain no visible ‘Use By’, ‘Best Before’ or ‘Product Code’ printing or labels. This could save a client the extra cost of retouching.

To increase the life-span of your product in DLibrary samples should not have any Use By, Best Before or Product Coding information visible on any part of the product which is to be photographed.

Avoid supplying samples that have dents and creases especially in plastic products such as milk.

Even though this Best Before date is stamped on the edge of the packaging it still needs to be removed.

Photographic Specifications When shooting product for DLibrary, photographers should keep in mind the end-use for these images. Primarily they will be used in printed publications such as catalogues, magazines and newsprint. Images are also used for electronic publications - web, 3D, TVC and video.

Many variables exist when photographing product, such things as product shape and size, the type of material used for the packaging, reflective qualities, colour definition and clarity of the printing on the product. All these variables plus others impact on the final shot, especially the lighting used.

Photographic Specifications It is essential that photographers have a fully calibrated digital camera and as there are a variety of cameras on the market, it is best to have it calibrated to the manufacturers specifications. Additionally, the viewing screen should truly reflect what the camera has captured. Our studios and quality control screens are set to the following calibrations:

White & Black Points When acquiring the raw capture from the camera it is necessary to set both the ‘white’ and ‘black’ points to ensure the correct contrast range. This may vary depending on how dark or light the product is. It is recommended to set these points initially as follows:

Photographic Specifications Lighting The amount and type of lighting used will depend on the product being shot, this evaluation is part of any photographic process which takes into account the products reflective qualities. How much and what type of lighting to be used is solely at the photographers professional discretion. With that in mind, a poorly lit shot can result in poor reproductive results. Ensure that the lighting used clearly represents the product in its best possible condition.

Photographers should also take into consideration that all products stored in DLibrary have a clipping path applied. With that in mind shooting products on a near white background makes this process not only easier but more cost effective. Visually, this will reduce the risk of products being reproduced with ‘grey’ edges, after the clipping path has been applied.

Good photography ensures lighting takes into consideration the type of product being photographed and it’s reflective qualities.

Photographic Specifications Product Set-up When photographing for DLibrary some care and attention should be taken to minimise product imperfections of ‘samples’ that are supplied. These imperfections may vary depending on the sample itself. Dents in tins, creases, bubbles, tears in wrappings or labels all have an impact on the amount of retouching that might be required after the shot is taken. Correctly setting up a product sample prior to photography, such as taping down loose box edges with double-sided tape, or removing the blank ‘safety seal’ from the top of a jar for example would alleviate the need to ‘retouch’ this area later on.

By removing the blank ‘safety seal’ wrapping from the product before the shot is taken will save retouching.

In this instance the ‘safety seal’ would remain as it has printing on it’s surface.

Photographic Specifications From time to time, due to the type of product being photographed, multiple shots are taken to improve appearance or clarity. These multiple shots* can then be combined at a later stage to produce the finished result. Another method of achieving a better result is by removing the product from inside its packaging, where a flatter element will be easier to photograph.

Second shot - removed product and filled with white liquid to highlight label.

Third shot - remove lid on caramel version for ice-cream shape.

Once caramel version was inserted it was then colour corrected to chocolate.

Brighten and enhance text on label and ribbon.

Final combined product stored in DLibrary.

Photographic Specifications Photographic Angles To give retailers greater flexibility in the production of their marketing and advertising material DLibrary photographs products, where applicable, with a 2 and 3 dimensional photographic profile referred to as 2D & 3D. The primary ‘branding’ details of the product being photographed should also be considered.

DLibrary requires, as its standard, that all products be shot and stored with the 2D photographic profile.

The decision to also photograph a product with a 3D photographic profile should be confirmed with the customer prior to the commencement of the photography process.

Certain other factors will also determine the desired 3D angle as well. For example, a rectangular box shape will show both a left-hand and top edge, while a cylindrical can will show a top-edge only.

Deciding on which 3D set-up to apply can be quite a difficult decision due to the wide variations of product packaging. Photography examples have been provided within this document to guide photographers in deciding the appropriate scope and elevation required.

Photographic Specifications - 3D 3D – Round (jars/bottles/cans) Most jars, bottles and cans have their product ‘branding’ printed on labels stuck to or wrapped round a curved surface. 3D shows the height, width and depth of the product and is shot as: 1

Photographic Specifications - 3D 3D – Curve (tubs) Most tubs, such as margarine or ice cream have their major ‘branding’ element printed or placed on their lids with other ‘branding’ on the face of the product. Depending on the ratios between the lid and the container it covers some variations will occur. 3D shows the height, width and depth of the product and is shot as: 1

Photographic Specifications - 3D The common characteristic with these products is either their curved or round edged packaging and should be shot to the 3D - Curve Specification.

Photographic Specifications - 3D 3D – Yoghurt (yoghurt various) Due to the various types of packaging and ‘branding’ this product displays it requires its own set of photographic specifications. Yoghurt needs to be shot in four distinct photographic profiles or styles as outlined here.

Style 1 - Tubs This profile is a cross between the 3D Round and 3D Curve profiles, generally yoghurt tubs have a translucent re-sealable lid with printing visible through it, however their major ‘branding’ element is on the front of the tub. 3D shows the height, width and depth of the product and is shot as: 1

Photographic Specifications - 3D Style 2 – Singles, Twin-Packs, Twin & Multi-Packs with Open-sided packaging This photographic profile is shot similar to the 3D Square profile and can also be used for other forms of product that might have similar characteristics, such as twin pack jellies, fruits or desserts. 3D shows the height, width and depth of the product and is shot as: 1

Photographic Specifications - 3D Style 4 – Multi-Packs with Open-fronted packaging Once again the major ‘branding’ component for this form of packaging is situated at the top, with a descriptive element denoting what varieties are contained within the product. 3D shows the height, width and depth of the product and is shot as: 1

Photographic Specifications - 3D The 3D Yoghurt Style 4 profile is to be used for Multi-Packs with Open-fronted packaging, this style can be used for similarly packaged products.

Photographic Specifications - 3D 3D - Eggs Due to their unusual packaging shape egg cartons require their own photographic profile, this profile is to be used for all eggs carton sizes. 3D shows the height, width and depth of the product and is shot as: 1

Elevated (exposing carton top and front) The carton top and front of lid should be proportionately equal in depth and is measured from the back to the front leading edge at the top of the carton. This will then leave the egg shape cups of the carton exposed at the bottom. To accommodate for a wider lid top or squarer carton the front and the egg shape cup profile is to remain.

Photographic Specifications - 3D All sizes of egg cartons - 6, 9, 10, 12 and 15 with this traditional style of packaging should all be photographed to the 3D - Egg photographic profile.

Photographic Specifications - 3D 3D - Cheese While all cheese blocks and rounds are shot with a 2D profile some cheese slice packs require a 3D photographic profile as well. Their primary ‘branding’ is situated at the top of their packaging. 3D shows the height, width and depth of the product and is shot as: 1

Elevated position (exposing top) In general a ratio of 2/3 lid to 1/3 container applies. As the height of the container reduces the ratio is more 3/4 lid to 1/4 container.

Photographic Specifications - 3D Cheese slices are usually packaged in a clear or translucent plastic container with their primary ‘branding’ situated on the top. Other forms of packaging cheese include cardboard boxes. These can be photographed using the 3D - Square photographic profile. Portions of rounds or ‘wedges’ should not be shot as a 3D profile.

Photographic Specifications - 3D 3D – Bulk Bulk packed products are usually wrapped in clear plastic, to enhance the product this wrapping should be removed prior to photography. The exception is when the plastic wrap has branding or product information printed on it, in this instance the plastic wrapping should remain unless otherwise directed by the client. 3D shows the height, width and depth of the product and is shot as: 1

Photographic Specifications - 3D 3D - Bulk pack products are shot similar to 3D - Square but with a shallower elevation. The primary focus of this kind of shot is to show the amount of items in the bulk pack, not the amount of tops of cans or lids.

Photographic Specifications - 3D 3D – Miscellaneous Products which are classified as miscellaneous come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and ‘branding’ elements vary accordingly. Photography should still apply the left to right principle of images being shot with a 3D profile and be in keeping with the overall style of DLibrary.

Photographic Specifications - 3D 3D - Miscellaneous items are usually non-perishables such as cooking utensils, storage containers, books, etc. Some items have no branding at all so consideration of functionality should be taken into account, as to how it best fits into the overall style of DLibrary.

A client may request that the packaging for a bottle be included in the shot, giving the product a more stylized feel. With these types of shots the packaging or box is positioned on the left at the 3D - Square profile with the bottle to the right at the 2D front-on profile.

Photographic Specifications - Liquor Cartons The primary ‘branding’ for cartons is situated either on the sides or at the top, keeping this in mind some cartons can be shot in different ways to achieve the correct 3D appearance. Generally cartons are shot with the 3D - Square Photographic profile. 3D shows the height, width and depth of the product and is shot as: 1

Photographic Specifications - Fresh Produce, Meat, Bakery, Plants & Flowers To achieve greater flexibility for our customers and to increase the ‘shelf-life’ of these items all Fresh products are to be photographed brand neutral. These products can be photographed in various 2D & 3D styles and do not adhere to the general left-to-right 3D photographic principle of DLibrary Supermarket or Liquor.
