Summer Reading 2018 Children’s Services Calendar of Events

Children who reach their reading goals by August 15 will receive a reading certificate, a FREE book, some coupons and be entered into a drawing for a fifty-dollar gift card! After reading the first book, each child can have his/her log stamped to receive a book bag! To encourage children to read throughout the summer, we will have a weekly drawing at each branch for special prizes from restaurants, bowling, etc. Every week of summer will be assigned a special drawing prize. Children may enter once a week if a new book has been read. Prizes will be available ONLY the week to which they have been assigned. A full list of prizes can be found at your library. To enter, take your reading log to your library to show that you have read a book. We will stamp your log and enter your name into that week’s drawing. Entry for weekly drawings stops when a child turns in the reading log for final prizes. From August 16 to August 31, children turning in their completed book logs will receive a reading certificate. Please Note: Space is limited for each program, please call to register. Programs will start on time. Participants should be punctual, as latecomers may not be seated.

Tuesdays, May 29, June 5, 12, 19, 26, & July 3, 10, 17, 10:00 and 11:00 AM SUMMER STORYTIME! Toddlertime – for children from walking through 2 years old accompanied by an adult. Sessions are very informal and include short books, simple rhymes, songs, and fingerplays. Sessions last 20 to 25 minutes.

**Due to over-crowding, please attend only 1 toddler time per week** Tuesdays, May 29, June 5, 12, 19, 26, & July 3, 10, 17, 10:30 AM SUMMER STORYTIME! (lapsit and preschool meet at the same time) Lapsit– for babies from birth through crawling accompanied by an adult. Sessions last 15 to 20 minutes. They are very informal and include board books, simple rhymes, songs, and fingerplays. Preschool – for children about 3 to 5 years old. Children can attend without an adult, though adults must stay in the Children’s Room. Sessions last 30 minutes.

Tuesday nights, May 29, June 5, 12, 19, 26, & July 3, 10, 17, 7:00 PM FAMILY STORYTIME! Family storytime will be provided for a combination of toddler, preschool, and elementary ages along with their families. Children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Sessions will last approximately 30 minutes. 1

Wednesday, May 30, 2:30 PM, Ages 3 to 11 MOANA SING-ALONG Come join us for a fun-filled afternoon of music and celebration as we watch the movie Moana! Join in and sing along with Moana and Maui. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required and space is limited.

Thursday, May 31, 10:00 AM, Ages 3 to 6 I AM SO BORED! BOARD GAMES A bored little bear has nothing to do and no one to play with. Will he ever find the cure to his boredom? Find out with us as we read I Am So Bored! by Henrike Wilson. After our story, we will all play a variety of fun board games together. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 20 children. Sorry, no groups.

Thursday, May 31, 2:30 PM, Ages 7 to 11 BOREDOM BUSTER BOARD GAMES Judy and Peter are bored and restless. When they find a mysterious board game, however, they get more excitement than they bargained for. Join us as we read Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg. Afterward, we will cure all boredom by playing a variety of fun board games together. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Friday, June 1, 10:00 AM, Ages 3 to 5 BLAST OFF! ROCKET STORYCRAFT Are you ready for rockets reaching the stars? Join us for a rousing lift off and plenty of fun along the way. We’ll read Roaring Rockets by Tony Mitton and then create our own spaceship. 3, 2, 1 . . . BLAST OFF! All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Fridays, June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, & July 6, 13, 20, **10:00 AM & 2:30 PM, Ages 3 to 11 SUMMER CINEMA AT THE LIBRARY! Take a break from the summer sun with our Summer Cinema at the Library! We’ll be showing fun, family-friendly movies throughout the summer. Come out and enjoy some great movies like Aladdin, The Incredibles, Matilda, The Good Dinosaur, The BFG, and more! **Please pay attention to the scheduled movie times. Pick up a printed flyer for a full listing of our movies and show times. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult! Group registration is required.

Saturday, June 2, 10:00 AM, Ages 8 to 11 CALEDONIAN SOCIETY OF BATON ROUGE Join us as we welcome the Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge for all things Scottish. We will enjoy the sounds of bagpiping, the visuals of Scottish country dancing, a presentation on the Scottish national dress, and the reading of a Scottish tale. Families are welcome to attend. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Monday, June 4, 10:00 AM, Ages 2 to 4 BIG BUILDING FUN! Dugger! Dugger! Digger! What is that noise? Join us to find out as we read Dalmatian in a Digger by Rebecca Elliott. Afterward, we will build together some simple figures with our new Jumbo Playstix! All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 6 children. Wednesday, June 6, 10:00 AM, Ages 6 and up BATON ROUGE POLICE MOUNTED PATROL The Baton Rouge Police Force is ready to trot out the Mounted Patrol Unit to provide us with a demonstration of their day to day activities. Families are welcome to come meet the officers and their equestrian partners. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Thursday, June 7, 10:00 AM, All Ages BIRDS OF PREY Join us in the Children’s Room as specialists from the LSU Raptor Rehabilitation Center bring their raptor friends for an exciting program on these fascinating birds of prey. Thursday, June 7, 3:15 PM, Ages 5 and up BATON ROUGE BALLET THEATRE’S YOUTH BALLET Set to the timeless music of Léo Delibes, Coppélia is a ballet set hundreds of years ago in a Hungarian village. Follow the antics of Swanilda and Franz, two young lovebirds, who quarrel over the beautiful maiden in the window of the local toymaker’s shop. Havoc ensues as Swanilda and her friends sneak into Dr. Coppélius’ toyshop to discover life-size dancing toys and the truth about the girl in the window. Program lasts approximately 40 minutes. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Saturdays, June 9, 23, & July 7, 21, 10:00 AM, Ages 8 to 13 SUMMER CHESS Chess classes are being offered for beginners who have never played chess and for intermediate level players. For ages 9 to 13 (brave adults welcome; children age 8—only with the permission of chess coach and accompanied by an adult). Please arrive by 9:45 AM. There will be a novice tournament on August 4. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.

Saturday, June 9, 2:30 PM, Ages 2 to 11 PATCHES THE FIRE DOG Enjoy a visit from Patches the Fire Dog, a robot Dalmatian, from the Baton Rouge Fire Department. They will be sharing important fire safety tips. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Monday, June 11, 2:30 PM, Ages 3 to 11 WINGS OF HOPE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY Leslie Lattimore, the founder and director of Wings of Hope Wildlife Sanctuary, will be here with some special friends. Learn exciting facts about these creatures and explore their impact on the environment. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Tuesday, June 12, 2:30 PM, All Ages DAISY THE READING PIG—PIG OUT ON READING! Farmer Minor tells stories about Daisy's formative years (all true) with Farmer & Mrs. Minor and shares many of her favorite pig books. Daisy probably has the world's largest collection of ‘pig’ books and is the "most famous pig in the whole world!" Program lasts approximately 45 minutes. Wednesday, June 13, 10:00 AM, Ages 3 to 5 ROCK AND ROLL MUSICAL MOBILE Guitars, trumpets, and stars… oh my! Come rock and roll as we listen to Barnyard Boogie by Tim McCanna. We’ll sing and dance, then make a colorful mobile to hang at home full of musical instruments to remember our rockin’ good time at the library. Thursday, June 14, 2:30 PM, Ages 4 to 11 PLAYMAKERS OF BATON ROUGE SUMMER TOUR—ROCK OF PAGES! When Griffin and Katie get dropped off at the library by their mom, they couldn’t be less excited. What’s so fun about a library? With the guidance of a zany librarian with a passion for rock, Griffin and Katie go on an adventure through books, igniting their imagination and love for reading! Friday, June 15, 10:00 AM, Ages 2 and up THE HARVEY RABBIT AND FRIENDS SHOW Join Harvey Rabbit, Cecil the Orangutan, Miss Laura, and Mr. Tim as they bring fun and mayhem to the library with ventriloquism, puppetry, music, magic, comedy, and audience participation! Saturday, June 16, 2:30 PM, Ages 3 to 11 ERIC HERMAN PRESENTS COMICAL MUSIC! Eric Herman's concerts for kids are bursting with comedy, creativity, audience participation, and outrageously fun songs including his YouTube hits (over 50 million views), "The Elephant Song," "Dance Like an Animal" and "Blackbeard, Bluebeard and Redbeard." Monday, June 18, 10:00 AM, Ages 4 to 11 RICK KELLEY PRESENTS DON’T JUST SIT THERE...READ SOMETHING! Singer-songwriter-keyboardist-one-man-band AND children's author, Rick Kelley presents, "Don't Just Sit There. . . Read Something!"—a fun filled, extremely interactive music program designed to get kids and families excited about reading and developing a passion for learning and books. This event includes sing-alongs, dance-alongs, comedy, movement and even a hula hoop contest finale. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Monday, June 18, 2:30 PM, Ages 6 to 8 PET ROCKS! On a backpacking trip with her aunt and uncle, a young girl collects rocks in the forest, by the river, and at the lake, but her pack becomes too heavy to carry. What will Rhoda do? Come find out as we read Rhoda's Rock Hunt by Molly Griffin. Then, we’ll each make a cool pet rock. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Tuesday, June 19, 2:30 PM, Ages 2 to 11 DIDGERIDOO This is a high-energy, Australian show that combines music, culture, puppetry, comedy, character building, storytelling, and audience participation. The didgeridoo, usually a hollow tree trunk, has been played by Aboriginal Australians for at least 1,500 years and is known for its otherworldly sound. However, DDU is more than music. It is interactive, educational, motivational and super fun! All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Group registration is required.

Wednesday, June 20, 2:30 PM, Ages 9 to 11 GATOR CASTANETS In this storycraft, you get to be a part of the story! Come listen to Big Wide Mouthed Frog by Anna Martin and provide the animal sounds for the story using musical instruments. Then continue the musical-animal fun by making castanets that look like alligators! Registration is required and limited to 10 children. Sorry, no groups.

Saturday, June 23, 2:30 PM, Ages 2 to 11 with families CAPITOL CITY OBEDIENCE CLUB Come enjoy a fun and informative introduction into the world of dogs. Members of the Capital City Obedience Club along with their canine friends will be demonstrating and sharing tips for obedience, agility, training, and socialization. Wednesday, June 27, 10:00 AM, Ages 4 to 11 MEET KNOX, THE MINIATURE—NOT A PONY! Knox's owner, Ms. Milissa, will read a horse story and tell you about miniature horses. Then the children can have their pictures taken with Knox. While they wait their turn, children can make a picture frame to hold their picture. Wednesday, June 27, 2:30 PM, Ages 3 to 11 TRI-PARISH BALLET PRESENTS AN ENCHANTING BALLET CALLED THE CARNIVAL This ballet by young dancers is sure to both delight and enchant our audiences with scenes from The Carnival. Thursday, June 28, 10:00 AM, Ages 4 to 7 MAJESTIC WATERCOLOR BUTTERFLIES Claire, a butterfly with see-through wings, gets lost in the city where she helps a garden bloom and grow. But will Claire ever be reunited with her family? Join us to find out as we read Glasswings: A Butterfly’s Story by Elisa Kleven. Thursday, June 28, 2:30 PM, Ages 2 to 11 JOHNETTE DOWNING PRESENTS READING ROCKS! The ever-popular Johnette Downing will entertain us with her South Louisiana brand of music for children!
