“BLESSED ARCHBISHOP OSCAR ROMERO” Saturday, May 23rd, Pope Francis beatified Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador. Pat Marrin, the editor of a Catholic publication, Celebration, wrote an article about the Archbishop pointing out his influence on Pope Francis. Here are a few excerpts from Mr. Marrin’s article which may help us understand the importance of the martyred Archbishop for the universal Church. “On March 20, 1980, Archbishop Romero, standing at the altar in a small hospital chapel, was shot and killed by a military sniper. He gave his life as a good shepherd for his flock in a time of persecution. He modeled what a bishop looks like in a church committed to justice for the poor. Romero’s death and the baptism of blood endured by the people of El Salvador during its 12 year civil war (1980-92) have larger implications for the universal Church...Pope Francis’ determination to advance Romero’s cause for sainthood recognizes this witness.” “For Romero, the Incarnation meant that the life, death and resurrection of Jesus are a present reality, the engine of history, active in each generation. As the Good Shepherd lays down his life for his flock, so Romero chose to die with his beloved poor rather than compromise the Gospel… Once Romero had decided to challenge El Salvador’s wealthy families backed by the military, his fate was joined to the poor majority. (At the 1968 meeting of Latin American bishops at Medellin, Columbia, the phrase “God’s option for the poor” first entered official Church teachings.)” “Romero’s term as Archbishop (1977-1980) became a three year martyrdom of vilification and constant death threats… Pope Francis has insisted that real solidarity with the poor in their struggle in shaping the future for the entire human family is essential to the Church’s mission of evangelization. Pope Francis wants a living Church open to God’s surprises. This is what enables us to resolve the apparent paradoxes of joining mercy to justice, love to truth, ideals to reality…” Pat Marrin concludes his article with this comment for all of us: “It will take a committed universal Church to alter the direction of history toward a more just, sustainable future. Romero and the people of El Salvador gave their lives for such a Church, and Pope Francis seems determined to invite all of us to be a part of it.” Blessed Oscar Romero, pray for all of us.

YMCA Camp Duncan gives children a safe environment to overcome challenges like mastering the climbing wall or hitting their first bull’s eye at Archery. The cabin experience shows children how to live cooperatively by sharing chores and respecting each other’s differences. The students will participate in the following classes: Bubble Mania, IExplore, Night Hike, Outdoor Adventure Survival, and Terrific Trees. The students are eager to explore, experience and engage the great outdoors!

HOLY SPIRIT LIFE LEARNING CENTER We are seeking donations of used cell phones and smartphones (regardless of age, condition, or model) until June 5th. At the end of the collection, the cell phones will be picked up by Shelter Alliance and we will receive money for every donated phone. SMM is starting a young adult ministry! If you are interested in joining the SMM Young Adult Ministry and seeking to deepen your faith in Christ, consider attending the CFC Singles for Christ (SFC) Christian Life program (CLP). Focus on t he Word CYCLES OF FAITH Pentecost Sunday “'Rivers of living water will flow from within him who believes in me.' He said this in reference to the Spirit." Rivers of living water. What does this image make us think of? Something active. Something dynamic and changing, yet constant and dependable. A river with living water is not stagnant; it is not silent, but rather it speaks. This river is not mucky or full of algae. This river is clear, beautiful, refreshing, and life-giving. It draws people to its banks by providing the kind of water that sustains life and the kind of scenery that is a joy to behold. Those who believe in Jesus will be like this river. Through the Spirit of Christ, which first came upon Christian believers at Pentecost and which came upon us at our baptism, we become a source of "living water." Instead of being motionless, dull, murky, unproductive people, we are strengthened by God's power to be dynamic, refreshing, and life-giving. This isn't automatic, however. We must cooperate with the Spirit that has been given to us. Those of us who have received confirmation have been sacramentally gifted with the fullness of the Spirit, but that doesn't mean that the living water is flowing at full speed. As St. Paul wrote in his second letter to Timothy, we need to "stir into flame the gift of God" (1:6). The flame may be there, but if we don't fan it through prayer, virtuous living, spiritual formation, and frequent reception of the sacraments, then it will never burst forth with the full power that it could have. But let us take heart! Even this process of "fanning" is made easier when we call upon the Holy Spirit to help us. For St. Paul reminds us today that "the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness." © Liturgical Publications Inc

GARDENING AROUND SMM Last Saturday was our mulch day. It was a perfect day to move and spread over 75 bags of mulch. I would like to first thank Art Hermann for fixing the surrounding pavers of the west rain garden. The pavers have been falling in the last few years, and Art was kind enough to completely restore both the east and west rain garden edging.
