Introduction • Medium (sing.), media (pl.) has possible

meanings:

– Storage medium: a means for storing information (e.g., harddisc, CD).

– Transmission medium: a means for transmitting information – – – –

(e.g., fiberoptic, coaxial cable). Input/output medium: a means for converting information (e.g.,loudspeaker, microphone). Representation medium: a means for expressing information (e.g., air pressure, light intensity). Perception medium: a means (of humans) for perceiving content. Data medium: a means for representing or carry data (e.g., Picture, sound, text).

10

Introduction – Human Perception Modalities • Seeing (visual): still image, diagram, animation, video • Hearing (audio): music, speech, acoustic signals • Reading (textual): text

– Less common : • Feeling (tactile): braille, force feedback (mostly games) • Taste, smell: next big wave?

Introduction • Digital media produced anywhere by anyone and are accessible to anyone anywhere • Today’s media users become tomorrow’s media producers • Not 500 TV Channels — 500,000,000 multimedia Web sources Dr. Mohammed Abdel-Megeed Salem

Introduction to Media Engineering

Lecture 1

12

Introduction • Information/Data can be conveyed in the form of Text, Still images, Web pages, Slideshow presentation, Video, or Sound

Time-Based media: media which exhibit some changes over time Static media: media which not changes over time, of course time pass when you look at a still image , or read a text, but the image don’t change during that time Dr. Mohammed Abdel-Megeed Salem

Introduction to Media Engineering

Lecture 1

14

Introduction – Multimedia Types • Each media has its own characteristics, leading to distinctive strengths and weakness.

• Always choose the most appropriate medium for your purpose

Dr. Mohammed Abdel-Megeed Salem

Introduction to Media Engineering

Lecture 1

15

Introduction – Multimedia Types Text, still images, sound video, and animation are separate media

Media can be combined into multimedia. Example of digital multimedia: World Wide Web (WWW)

Combines text, images, time based media in a network of pages connected by links

Introduction to Media Engineering

Lecture 1

31

Problem Domain • Today people can easily find, edit, share, and reuse media • Computers don’t understand media content – Media is opaque and data rich – We lack structured representations

• Without content representation (metadata), manipulating digital media will remain like wordprocessing with bitmaps Dr. Mohammed Abdel-Megeed Salem

Introduction to Media Engineering

Lecture 1

32

Problem Domain • Vastly more media will be produced • Without ways to manage it (metadata creation and use) we lose the advantages of digital media • We need to understand multimedia data and find ways to create, retrieve and deal with them.
