O

ne of the best reasons to compete in the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships is the opportunity to visit different places throughout the country with your friends and teammates.

While the USBC Open Championships has enjoyed 112 years of competition, the 2015 edition marks the event’s first trip to El Paso, Texas, and fourth visit to the Lone Star State. So this year’s trip is the perfect opportunity to take in all the great things the Southwest has to offer. Only a few hours of your trip will be spent on the lanes at the El Paso Convention Center, so that leaves plenty of time to enjoy the food, attractions and scenery in the history-rich Sun City.

Entertainment There definitely is no shortage of things for the family to do in El Paso. Options include the El Paso Zoo, swimming, batting cages, golf courses, amusement parks and more. Maybe take in a show at the historic Plaza Theater, one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Play ball! The newest addition to the fun in Sun City is the El Paso Chihuahuas, a Triple A baseball team. The Chihuahuas’ Southwest University Park is located in downtown El Paso, just a short walk from the El Paso Convention Center.

There’s something in El Paso to appeal to every interest, so make sure to get out and explore the city, and remember to tell your fellow bowlers about all the great things you experienced. Art Galleries and Museums El Paso is home to a variety of galleries and museums that celebrate more than 400 years of local history and tradition. Exhibits often feature the works of local and regional artists. During the 2015 tournament, the El Paso Exploreum will include a children’s exhibit about the science of bowling.

Revitalized Downtown Area Along with the addition of the Chihuahuas and their downtown stadium, the area continues to grow with the addition of new restaurants, bars, shops, events and festivals, all making the revitalized downtown area an exciting destination.

Wining and Dining The dining in El Paso highlights the rich flavor and tradition for which the city is known. From restaurants to cantinas, visitors can experience some of the best Southwest cuisine and icecold beverages, especially the margaritas, which are rumored to have been invented in the area in 1945. The area also includes a handful of wineries that have tours, tastings and delicious souvenirs.

Annual Events No matter what time of year you’re in El Paso, there will be an event or festival to enjoy, with more being added to the schedule all the time. Enjoy the family-friendly Kidspalooza event in March, Ardovino’s Famers Market in May, the Billy the Kid Festival in June and more. Shopping El Paso is filled with plenty of great shopping options to fit any need. Whether you’re looking for the mall and some brand names or clothing and souvenirs with a local flair, the shopping scene in El Paso is a great way to spend time off the lanes. Gaming Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino is just over the New Mexico state line and offers more than 700 slot machines and the chance to bet on some exciting horse races. It’s only a 10-minute drive from downtown El Paso and includes several dining choices and live entertainment every week.

Missions Historic missions can be found throughout El Paso. The missions at Ysleta, Socorro and San Elizario Chapel are essential parts of the city’s history and give visitors a balanced look at the foundations and diversity of Sun City. Originally constructed during the 1600s and 1700s, these churches help tell the story of the city, while the accompanying exhibits and restaurants allow for hands-on learning about the respective communities. Nature Tourism The mild weather and breathtaking scenery in the El Paso area certainly allow for a variety of outdoor activities, including rock climbing, hiking, horseback riding and biking, and visits to botanical gardens, parks, ranches, farms and orchards. El Paso earned its Sun City nickname because it has more than 300 days of sunshine each year. Leave the big city behind for a while, and enjoy the fresh air. Two great places to visit are the Franklin Mountains State Park and Wyler Aerial Tramway.

SHOWCASE LANES, BOWLERS JOURNAL CHAMPIONSHIPS SHARE TOURNAMENT VENUE

M

aybe it’s the excitement of a first-time host city or the challenge of the 2015 USBC Open Championships that brought you to El Paso, Texas. But now that you’re here, make sure to take advantage of all the competitive opportunities and offerings inside the El Paso Convention Center. Competing in the Bowlers Journal Championships presented by USBC or getting a tuneup with some practice time on the Showcase Lanes are just a couple of the opportunities available. Those who choose to become members of the VIP program in 2015 can enjoy both experiences, along with a variety of other benefits and discounts. Since being introduced in 2012, the Showcase Lanes have become a can’t-miss stop inside the Open Championships venue. Initially used just for team practice sessions and the occasional lesson, the Showcase Lanes also are home to the Bowlers Journal Championships, the premier side event held in conjunction with the Open Championships each year. The Bowlers Journal Championships and Open Championships have been held in the same host city for nearly seven decades but came together under the same roof for the first time in 2013. That tradition continues inside the El Paso Convention Center. Bowlers and teams looking to finalize their tournament strategies can reserve a pair on the 10 Showcase Lanes for $150, which gives them one hour of practice on the Open Championships team oil pattern. This year, there also is an option for groups of five or less to practice on one lane for just $75. Onehour sessions are available at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Those looking to take advantage of the extra competitive opportunities can bowl a squad or two at the Bowlers Journal Championships. There’s a variety of age- and average-based divisions, so there is something for everyone. Ambitious bowlers can take advantage of the event’s Dual Entry feature, which allows their three-game total to be used for doubles and singles at the same time. New in 2015, the Bowlers Journal will feature Handicap Doubles for bowlers with combined entering averages of 399 and below. Also, all overall tournament champions will receive custom awards. The Bowlers Journal Championships is held on the same lane condition competitors will face during doubles and singles at the Open Championships, something that started in 2013 when the Open Championships used two different oil patterns – one for team and another for doubles/singles – for the first time. Squad times for the 2015 Bowlers Journal Championships will be 10 a.m. (fresh oil), noon, 2 p.m. (fresh oil), 4 p.m., 6 p.m. (fresh oil) and 8 p.m. Another chance to test your skills is The Forty Frame Game. Introduced in 1989, the unique handicap singles tournament has followed the Open Championships each year since 1992 and features 40 continuous frames that include no-tap frames, mulligans, bonus pins and other fun challenges. The unique event has a variety of side events and doubles for bowlers to earn additional prize money.

STANDARD SET IN 2014 Competitors at the 2014 USBC Open Championships were more than up to the task, as a record nine teams topped the 3,500 mark at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nevada. But it was Artistic Expressions 1 of Oklahoma City that stole the spotlight, posting the highest team score (3,720) in the 111 years of Open Championships competition. Individually, Anthony LaCaze of Melrose Park, Illinois, solidified his place in tournament history by claiming a coveted eagle for the second consecutive year, adding the Regular All-Events title to the Team All-Events title he won in 2013. The 2014 tournament also featured the highest team game (1,318) in tournament history, fired by Team Turbo Grips of Fort Wayne, Indiana. SEVERAL MILESTONES TO BE REACHED IN 2015

D

uring a USBC Open Championships career that spans nearly seven decades, USBC Hall of Famer Bill Lillard Sr. of Houston has been a recognizable part of the tournament’s evolution. The eight-time Open Championships Bill Lillard Sr. winner’s participation pre-dates the addition of Center Aisle (1954), automatic pinsetters (1957) and automatic scoring (1979), and he continues to impact the tournament record books. This year, he’ll be the headliner on a long list of bowlers expected to reach significant milestones at the El Paso Convention Center as he becomes the all-time pinfall leader at the Open Championships. Lillard’s 122,918 total is 852 pins shy of fellow hall of famer Joe Norris, who knocked down 123,770 pins in a record-tying 71 tournament appearances. Lillard will make his 68th consecutive tournament appearance March 30 at 5 p.m. and is expected to break the record during doubles on March 31 at 1 p.m. Sylvester Thiel of Lake City, Minnesota, also is in pursuit of Norris and will get one step closer when he joins the 70-Year Club. Thiel will become the third bowler in history to reach the 70-year mark, joining Norris and USBC Hall of Famer Bill Doehrman, who both competed 71 times.

Rice’s dedication on the lanes at the local and state levels have earned him induction into the Dubuque, Platteville Area and Wisconsin State USBC Bowling Association Halls of Fame, and will help him into the 100,000-Pin Club at the Open Championships this year, too. In 59 tournament appearances, Rice has knocked down 99,111 pins, leaving him 889 pins away from becoming the 16th member of the exclusive club. His lifetime average at the Open Championships is 186.6. Clinton Zavakos of Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, and Frank Clay of Crystal Lake, Illinois, who both celebrated 60 years of participation in 2014, also have the 100,000-pin mark and coveted crystal pin within reach. Zavakos, 79, has toppled 99,059 pins and is 941 pins away, while Clay, 84, enters the 2015 event with a career pinfall of 98,252, still 1,748 pins from the mark. Through 2014, 15 bowlers have knocked down more than 100,000 pins at the Open Championships.

Ellis is fifth on the tournament’s career pinfall list with 113,357, and his lone title at the Open Championships came at the 1961 event in Detroit, where he and fellow hall of famer Joe Kristof paired up to capture the first Classic Doubles crown with a 1,331 total. Dick Rice of Platteville, Wisconsin, will join the growing 60-Year Club this year. He started his tournament career at the 1953 event in Chicago and has been to every event since 1968. The 80-yearold right-hander will make his milestone march down Center Aisle at the El Paso Convention Center on April 27 at 5 p.m. Through 2014, only 19 bowlers have reached the 60-year plateau.

Thiel’s 2015 trip down Center Aisle will come Sylvester Thiel March 18 at 5 p.m., and he’ll be the first competitor to receive the new 70-year award. The 92-year-old is sixth on the career pinfall list with 112,385. The seven-person 65-Year Club is expected to welcome two new members in 2015 as USBC Hall of Famer Don Ellis of Sugar Land, Texas, and Anthony Malone of Erie, Pennsylvania, head to Sun City in 2015. Both also are members of the 100,000-Pin Club. Ellis, an 86-year-old right-hander, began his tournament journey at the 1947 Open Championships in Los Angeles. He missed several tournament appearances early in his career but has made the annual march down Center Aisle every year since 1955, which also was the same year he won the famed Petersen Classic. He’ll compete on April 14.

FAVORITE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS MEMORY Getting to bowl with my two sons, Michael and Kenneth Beltz. I was able to watch Michael bowl a 298 game in singles and follow it up a few years later with a 300 game in doubles.

FAVORITE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS MEMORY My first tournament in Buffalo in 1963. We bowled the team event on lanes 1-20 and the final matches for the Masters were bowled on 21-40. Many of those bowlers were my idols, and the stands were filled with spectators.

Corpus Christi (Texas) also is a favorite because there were a lot of things to see and do, and we’re all crazy about seafood, which we don’t get much at home. WHAT DOES REACHING 50 YEARS MEAN TO YOU When I started in 1966, I was 22 years old. The tournament and I have aged together. The fact I was able to make 50 consecutive years is a feat not very many have achieved. I am also proud of my 190 average during this time period.

FAVORITE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS MEMORY In Tampa, Florida, in 1979, I left leading in singles and all-events. In Syracuse, New York, in 1999, we finished second in team. We bowled the second weekend and shot 3,330. The following week, another team shot 3,336, and that’s how it ended. In 2013, we had our family team out here, which included me, my son, sonin-law and two grandsons.

And getting to bowl in the Open Championships with my three children, Sharon, Sandie and Charles Jr. And bowling with Dick Weber and Bill Lillard. And bowling with two of my best friends, Robert Higgins and Joe Rewick, for 40 years.
