Community Supported Agriculture (or CSA) is a way for your family to get your weekly produce and other farm products while directly supporting a local farm at a time when they need it most. A family signs up for a CSA share at the beginning of a growing season. Since the farm receives the payment upfront, they are immediately able to invest in the seeds, equipment, and other materials needed to launch their production for the season. In return, your family receives a box of farm fresh products each week of the growing season (anywhere between 20 and 25 weeks), to be picked up either on-farm or at specific drop-off locations. The variety of products you receive each week changes throughout the season, and many farms offer recipes for less familiar items.

Buchanan Farms

O

by Paula Combs

n a sunny but chilly March morning in Waterford, Va., I stood in an 18th-century barn with the owners of Buchanan Farms, Sharon Buchanan-McIntosh and Burt McIntosh. The mixture of hay, livestock and aging wood created that sweet but earthy smell that barns always seem to have. The farm is, wholeheartedly, a family-run business, and the McIntosh’s come from a long line of farmers in the area, dating back to 200 years. Burt farms over 1,000 acres—about half is rented and half is owned—and they have approximately 300 head of cattle that he manages. Buchanan Farms specializes in black angus beef, heritage breed pork and lamb. “We are a closed herd, and a closed operation,” says Sharon. “So, we’re not buying any livestock.” Burt explains, “That prevents disease—not buying cattle out of the market and bringing them back here with shipping fever.” As Sharon starts to speak, a cell phone begins to make engine-like “vroom, vroom” sounds from Burt’s pocket. With a snicker, Sharon makes note of his manly ringtone before she goes on to say, “The cows are always out on pasture, and we also

provide their feed ourselves.” Burt grows his own corn, barley and hay, which he uses to make different mixtures of feed for the livestock. “Everything we do– the bottom line– is to make a better meat product in a natural way,” says Sharon. Buchanan Farms takes great pride in their beef. “Anything that is not market fit, or is what we feel ‘not perfect,’ goes to the market auction, so it’s not getting into our sales,” explains Sharon. When a steer reaches 19 months and around 1,300 - 1,400 pounds, Burt begins to dry finish them. “Burt picks out the best of the best- the fat cattle, and he continues feeding them.” During the last 90 days, the cows are only fed ground, dry corn and dry hay, which helps make “the meat more tender,” says Sharon. The finished product can be found at the Leesburg Brambleton Farmers’ Markets on Saturdays. “We sell quarters, halves and whole cows. And we’ll sell pigs whole, as well,” says Sharon. After we left the barn, we walked out into the field with the cows. Watching Burt ahead of us, Sharon proudly says, “It’s a labor of love, and he loves doing it.”

n an effort to increase access to fresh, local foods for low-income families, the Leesburg Saturday Farmers Market partnered with the Loudoun Pediatric Obesity Coalition and INOVA Medical Center to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) dollars during the 2014 market season. The year-round Leesburg Saturday Farmers Market is the only market in Loudoun County that accepts SNAP dollars. SNAP customers who visit the market can purchase wooden tokens in $1 denominations that can be spend on food items and food producing plants offered by the nearly 40 market vendors. In addition, thanks to a grant from INOVA Medical Center, the Market has instituted a Double Dollars program where SNAP customers are eligible to receive up to $10 in matching funds at no cost—swipe your SNAP card for $10 in tokens and you’ll receive an extra $10 to spend at the market. From May 2014 to January 2015, SNAP customers purchased $1,077 worth of tokens, and received $480 in matching funds tokens. The hope for the 2015 market season is to encourage more SNAP users to visit the market, and to see a rise in token purchases.

Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum

T

he Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum’s motto, “We Preserve The Past—We Educate The Future” says it all. Located within the Claude Moore Regional Park in Eastern Loudoun County, the Museum is governed by a public/private partnership between the LHFM Board of Directors and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. The Museum was designed and built to showcase the more than 400-years of agricultural history in Loudoun County, Virginia. “We preserve, promote and bring to life Loudoun’s rich agricultural history and the history of rural life through educational programs and exhibits,” said Su Webb, President of LHFM. The programs implemented at the museum involve all levels of education from elementary to high school, and meet SOL standards. In addition, programs are provided for adults interested in the history of not only Loudoun County, but our museum artifacts. “As we like to remind people, many of our early agriculturalists were also national leaders; just as they are today. Roots run deep here at the Museum,” said Bill Harrison, President Emeritus/Historian and LHFM board member. Some of the museum’s exhibits include, “It’s Just a Way of Life,” which showcases 10 generations of Loudoun County Residents (including Elevation “the Holstein Bull of the

20th Century”) that built the County and left their mark on the land. Another exhibit, “Claude Moore Children’s Farm” allows the visitor to be a “farmer for a day” in an interactive exhibit area for children and their families. You can milk a life-like cow, collect eggs from the play chickens, and ride Equiponies in the Kentucky Derby race that former Loudoun resident, Genuine Risk, won. The “Waxpool General Store” exhibit is like a time capsule of days gone by. Visitors can tour the store and play shopkeeper, shopper, or postmaster. The display is reassembled from the actual Waxpool Store formerly located in Eastern Loudoun County. There’s also an interactive exhibit called “Grandma’s Kitchen.” It features furnishings and appliances from farm kitchens in the decade before World War I, prior to electrification. A new addition to the museum, the “Enos Victor Jenkins Indian Collection” exhibit, is a collection of Indian arrowheads and tools gathered by E.V. Jenkins and his family from fields plowed by their draft horses in the Lucketts area of Loudoun County. The Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum is open six days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm; and Sunday from 11:30 am – 4:30 pm.
